Jason the reason why Mark Hamill looks strange is they had to put a ton of makeup on him because this was after he was in a horrific car accident that's why they had the snow beast in Empire Strikes Back attack him because of the scars all over his face

The reason Mark Hamill looked like he did was that just before the filming of this could be because he was in a fairly bad car accident that severely injured his face in 1977. I THINK this was shot in 77 despite it releasing in 78, so they might have been using too much makeup to try and cover up the effect the accident had on his face. People speculate that's why at the start of the next star wars move he shot, it started with Luke getting attacked and having his face injured to use as cover for why his face looked different from the previous movie, but no one has officially ever confirmed that.

The Star Wars Holiday Special is infamous for having been shown ONCE on television and never again. This year actually marks the 45th anniversary. Aside from the cartoon, which is actually the debut of Boba Fett, it has never been publicly released, only bootlegged. I'm 54. I saw this on television when it aired. I stayed up late to watch it. Thought it was going to be the coolest thing ever. It was one of the most scarring events of my childhood. You can't imagine the horror of going from the movie to seeing this and being mind raped. The wookie porn scene. The wookies screaming without subtitles. Weird holographic acrobats. The random unexplained sketches about building projects or tourism advertisements.Jefferson starship singing into a dildo. A drunken Harrison ford. Mark Hamil as an Oompa Loompa. Bukaroo Banzi didn't confuse me as much as this did. It warped me for life. And afterward for a long time people tried to tell me that it wasn't even real and just an urban legend. I was there man and It was all too real. I thought people were trying to make me think I was crazy and it was a delusion or something. The horror...The horror.

The "Devil" was in the original "Star Wars" together with other silly characters -the reason for that was that the British production team didn't take the movie seriously and filled the cantina set with what they had lying around.

Not quite- when Lucas got back to the States to edit the film, he felt the cantina didn't have enough aliens in it. So Lucas brought in Rick Baker to create some new aliens. He made a few, and also grabbed several masks he'd already made-- including a Devil one.

I was a very young child, completely obsessed with Star Wars when this came out. I remember staring at the ad in the TV Guide for a whole week just couldn't wait to see it. After it was over I just sat there in mind numbing disappointment and asked my dad, "Does Star Wars Stink now, dad?" And my dad being my dad was already half in bag said, "Yep. But, did you see Princess Leia's nipples?" I did indeed. When "Empire" came out, the stain of this abomination was still fresh on my mind. Luckily, that didn't suck. But, my perpetually drunk dad (seriously, it's a miracle we never died in drunk driving accident. No one gave a crap about drunk driving back then.) almost got us killed on the way out. There was a line around the building and my dad being the asshole that he is gets about halfway down it heading back to the car and says as loudly as he can: "I CAN'T BELIEVE DARTH VADER IS LUKE SKYWALKER'S FATHER!!!!". A glass jar of peanut butter came within three inches of ending my life that night.

Little bit of background on Mark Hamill and why he does look so strange in the Holiday Special: In January 1977, after the shooting of "A new Hope", Mark had a bad car accident which resulted in a fractured nose and cheekbone. It was so serious that he even was scared of having to quit acting. That's why he got attacked in the beginning of "Empire" - so they could explain the different look of Luke going forward. Happy Holidays to all of you. Greetings from good old Germany. 🎉

The Wampa attack was not created to cover the scars, it just happened to be convenient in doing just that. They have claimed the makeup in the special was also not to cover the scars and broken nose, but they clearly tried to make his crooked nose look straight with it and covered some scars. I believe Mark has said the wounds from the accident weren't as bad as some think, but the differences before and after are pretty clear nonetheless.

If you want to get into the nerd weeds on this, Chewie owed Han Solo a life debt for saving his life, which was a part of his culture. So, he was honoring his pledge to repay Han Solo and wasn't exactly a deadbeat dad. But again, we're getting into the minutiae of Star Wars stuff :)

I did it! I binged all of the SBIG videos since they started the new format when sitting on the couch. That was a LOT of videos to go through! All of them amazing though. Got me thinking of what old b-style movies I loved as a kid and I could name 2 that I actually still have burned on to a DVD. Neon City from 91 with Michael Ironside and The Blood of Heroes from 89 with Rutget Hauer. Great movies both.

I was that amped kid. I saw Star Wars at the drive-in when I wasn’t quite 3 years old. When this was about to come on, my 4 year old heart was so excited. Then it started 😕 Then weird looking Luke came on the screen 😃 Then it was all downhill from there ☹️ I went to bed early. It was like Ralphie if he didn’t get his Red Ryder. (The cooking scene is a riff on Julia Childs)
