I personally love to see more people learning Korean since I started learning over 10 years ago and got pretty good at it. Korean's a super fun language to learn and I always had so much fun in each and every one of my Korean classes both here in America and in Korea. If I could I would love to take more advanced language and culture classes. It's just really fun and you meet the best people while learning it.

South Korea population is only about 50 million - it’s a tiny country. Korean alphabet is one of the easiest to learn to read/write. You might not know the meaning, but you’re able to learn it in 2-5 days for many.

Fewer people are learning Chinese for business because it is easier to find native Chinese speakers who speak other languages than to learn Chinese. China's growing hostility towards the West means fewer Westerners want to study and live there. Traveling to China is difficult because visas are hard to get, and flights are limited and expensive. Also, payment, hotels, reservations, taxis, and shopping in China for a foreigner are complicated compared to other Asian countries. At the same time, the great firewall of China means tourists can only access their socials and communication apps in China if they know what to do. And the country does not produce any significant cultural products other than food. So, there are not a lot of good reasons to learn Chinese.

From my experience of learning Korean as a college course for like 4 years, I think the language is fairly easy to start learning but hard to continue learning. Hence why I still don't speak it well even after 4 years lmaoo. The alphabet is easy but I think that's as far as most people can attempt to go bc once you start learning more and more about the grammar rules, you'll realize how hard it is,
@skatingcanuck9837

Reading it is easy to learn initially. Speaking is less easy. The honorifics really complicate it. I feel this way about a lot of languages. French was not super difficult, but the further advance you get you realize some of the grammar is complicated. University level French was very difficult because you have to choose between literature or translation - neither is easy.

I think people will initially dabble in it perhaps, but only certain people heavily tied to the culture will truly be dedicated or enjoy it. I grew up with my Korean culture so I have learned things over the years and have decided to dive more into my Asian roots to feel closer to my culture, hence I am studying more Korean and Mandarin to also speak with family and friends. I think some white people may just learn it because it’s cool now and because K-pop without truly appreciating the full culture.

The big reason for Korean culture becoming a hit is because the west also supported it and it is not seen as a threat. Koreans did their promotion as well which has contributed a lot but if the west constantly badmouth your culture and country, it won’t get far. After all, the global dominance is still the western culture. It will take time to be displaced.

Here in the US China had some soft power with the Bruce Lee and the Hong Kong kung fu movies during the 70s to 90s but they messed up with "The made in china" which equates to cheap and bad quality. Japan had some power with the technology and anime etc but they fell off because it feels like one sided love which wasnt reciprocated back. Korea is like a shoe salesman they will come with the bells and whistles ; try this, oh how bout this. They will try till it fits you and thats why they are where they are now. They are taking over the gaming industry, webtoons is killing it, films, beauty products, tech stuff, Kpop etc they are on a roll.

Absolutely. It's like plug and play, you can substitute Korean words into a Japanese structured sentence and it works. All the Kanji Chinese derived words are very similar sounding, if your brain is flexible in terms of sounds, you catch on easy. If you're a Japanese/Mandarin speaker like me even easier, but of course it takes work.

Assuming that South Korea and North Korea are unified countries, there would have been a lot of human and material exchanges between South Korea and China. If Japan and Korea had been connected by land, many human and material exchanges would have occurred. If so, the current focus of the world would have changed a lot. Looking at North Korea's Mr. Kim, I think it is useless to send our children to study in a Western country (Switzerland).

I was never in Anime, K Pop, or Kung Fu Flicks (Although I do love Bruce Lee). I prefer listening to mostly rock, heavy metal and punk (Metallica, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, the Ramones, Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys, Led Zeppelin). I play the guitar, not the piano and I certainly don’t listen to EDM or Asian pop of any kind. I mostly prefer Latin food and women over Asian. I’ve historically dated mostly Latina (Mexican, Colombian, Puerto Rican). Plus I’m also conservative and historically voted Republican. I’m definitely an unusual case but I can speak for myself when I say I have zero desire to learn any Asian languages.

Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea, and Ukraine are obvious losses. Iraq, Syria and Lybia are arguably wins but only if you define a win as the destruction of the country, in which case Ukraine's also a win (unfortunately for them). Only wins are really the two world wars in the last century. Either don't do politics or don't propagandize. Thanks.
