“Brutally disfigured “ is a legal standard she is attempting to meet to give her lawsuit validity. It is a relative term comparing the person to themselves before/after the procedure

"Brutally disfigured" might be the legal standard she needs to prove in order to win. I don't know for certain. A lot of times, whenever you hear these kind of awkward phrasings for legal claims, it's because they're speaking legalese as opposed to plain English.

Also I feel it’s a bit relative. If you are a model, and designers expect a specific figure (as sad as it is), this is affecting your livelihood. So it’s a lot more traumatic and life altering for them

"Brutally disfigured" is almost definitely not a formal legal standard unless it's some very obscure state law, but it's definitely very supportive language in terms of explaining the financial damages she incurred as a professional model. It might also be useful in asserting an claim for negligent/intentional infliction of emotional distress, where the "emotional cost" of the procedure needs to be extreme but is also subjective.

I think we should not criticize her choice using the phrase "brutally disfigured". I heard the interview and it was heartbreaking. I think for her the brutal part of it was a combination of looking completely different than what she looked like when she was the top supermodel and the cruel paparazzi, tabloids, comments, etc. Also, it looks really painful - might not look so horrible externally but it sounds horrifying - she said that if her thighs rub together she bleeds because the lumps are hard. So that is brutal.

I have to say that the comments minimizing how she feels about her disfigurement ("brutally disfigured") don't sit right with me. I'd be like telling an Olympic sprinter that had to get a foot amputated that "could be worse, some people lose both legs" or a pianist losing fingers that at least they still have arms. To someone who made not just a career but their identify and self worth tied to their ability to perform at a high level in the modeling space, losing that means a lot more than to someone for whom looks were not as important.

Well, brutally disfigured is a strong choice of words but it cannot be denied that she has indeed been disfigured by the procedure. She's left with painful bumps that look more like tumors than fat gathering in one area. She lost her career and livelihood and likely got depression. What I find more tone deaf was a certain prominent youtuber saying she might have lumps but thinks her main issue is body dysmorphia and should get treatment for that. Anyone would be devasted if they lost their ability to work so suddenly but of course if it's a model losing her looks it must mean she's not body positive enough... I'm so sick of the people involved in the body positivity movement, there's no empathy in them for anyone who doesn't conform to their ideaology.

Hi there, I had lipo a few years ago and it was the worst experience. I am disfigured and need a $50,000 surgery to correct some of the damage. I have had multiple doctors gasp when they see the damage. It was done to reduce thigh fat and I was aware of the risks. I never realized how common a “botched” outcome was until it happened to me. And no people are not sympathetic when you have complications from an elective surgery. Wish I could go back in time….

A long time ago I saw a documentary about liposuction done wrong. The surgeon was expensive, credible and a gentleman. On the security footage of the operations it was shown though that he turned into a "butcher". People often blame the victim, because they do not want to face the reality that nobody is truly safe from this type of people. Yes, minimal intervention is almost always the least risky, but if a trusted surgeon lies about the risks and his capabilities it becomes difficult to assess the risks properly.

Linda of course still looks good but considering what she used to look like and what her supermodel friends still look like it's no wonder it's devastating for her. To go from being considered one of the most beautiful women in the world to looking like she does now and having media and people that recognize you talk about how horrible you look now is awful. it is not our place to tell a person whether or not they may, or should, feel "disfigured," "misshapen," etc. It is up to them to describe their feelings, and just because one may not agree that anyone should use terms like "misshapen" or "disfigured" to describe one's physical appearance, unfortunately people do feel this way, and should be allowed to express it.

It seems like it’s far more than 1%. The issue is, it’s not being reported correctly. Cosmetic surgeons aren’t actually educating people because it’s a “rare” side effect. Same way they don’t educate women about cyst formations after you stop birth control.

The thing is 1% is a lot. One in 100. When you buy medicine and look at the leaflet: 1% have that side effect means it's a "frequent" side effect. 0,1% would be a rare side effect.

@-MaryPoppins-
@-MaryPoppins- 2 жыл бұрын
@@johanna2690 no hun, there isn’t 😔 not that I know of, but I would absolutely make sure your obgyn is aware of your worries, and do not allow them to dismiss your fears without actually checking up on you. Once you stop your birth control, your hormones will understandably be wonky, as your body balances itself out again. At some point, your body will begin ovulation again, and this is when those cysts are most likely to form. Each little egg we have is stored in an immature stage inside a little bubble (called a follicle). When triggered by hormones that you are ovulating, a few of these follicles begin producing estrogen to prepare your uterus for pregnancy, and when the time comes to release your egg, only one of the four or so follicles should be maturing their egg. If that doesn’t happen, more than one follicle can grow. Because our hormones can be incredibly disrupted by the hormone fluctuations, your body may continue grow these follicles and as the mature bursts open to release the egg into the Fallopian tube, the others may continue to grow “out of control”. That’s what is most likely to cause those cysts “on” the ovaries for women. Technically, we have a little cyst pop every month to release that egg (the little bubble that holds the egg). But any tiny issue with out hormones can cause it to over grow, or the other follicles not to be reabsorbed. Sorry this is so long, no one ever explained it to me, and I wanted to make sure you know what’s happening!! What I would do, is watch for pain that feels like sever period cramps, odd spotting, similar to a bladder/kidney infection, similar to a UTI, or similar to your appendix being ready to burst 🥴 pain during sex that wasn’t there before (because obviously partner could be hitting the are and making the cyst move), any weird “pressure” in your pelvis, etc. you can also go ahead and let your doctor know you would like to make sure there are none forming and go in for a pelvic ultrasound to make sure nothing is wonky about a month after stopping hun! Then go in and make sure you’re checked out again if you feel ANYTHING out of place! So many women don’t even know they’ve had them form and assume it’s normal ol horrible period pain. But they go from painful to deadly VERY quickly, if it torques your ovary or bursts and causes internal bleeding, so it’s all around better to be prepared! Hope you do NOT GO THROUGH IT THOUGH!!!❤️

She does look brutally disfigured to me. I don't think its helpful to compare her trauma to burn victims or those who have suffered acid attacks, that's an entirely different situation. It is likely those people don't completely rely on their looks for work as Linda did. It is possible to have compassion for all of these horrible scenarios and appreciate they are completely different situations. I don't think she's said anything wrong in the way she's describing her experience, I support her. What she's gone through is brutal and she is disfigured now. I also think she's probably accurate that they didn't give her side effect info either, I can well believe it. I hope she wins her lawsuit and wish it could bring her some comfort.

Yea, I think it’s entirely plausible that no one told her about the side effects. Doctors have been ignoring evidence of breast implant illness and not telling perspective patients about the possibilities until just last year and that surgery has been performed for like a century now. Obviously every procedure is different and science improves with time but plastic surgeons make most of their money through elective cosmetic procedures. Most of what they offer and do on a daily basis is not “necessary” or serve a medical purpose so they’re kind of sales people and there isn’t always as clear of an outline of disclaimers they have to make during a sale. I cant say I know enough of Evangelista’s situation to comment but it’s important as consumers that we hold doctors to the highest ethical standards and push for full transparency.

I am of the same generation as Linda, in fact she's just a few years older than me. To put things into context, Linda and the rest of the 90s supermodels were considered Goddesses and the golden standard for beauty and physical perfection at the time. Their fame and aura far surpassed any level that the IG influencers or Hollywood starlets of today could ever hope to attain. They commanded their own price and terms. The 90s were also a time of schockingly gratuitous objectification of women. It's sad that inspite of all her experience, Linda had such deeprooted insecurities that she felt the need to undergo drastic procedures. This may be considered a non invasive procedure, but it's still an assault to the body. I feel for her, I truly do. It must be painful and soul crushing, and it is brave of her to step forward, and bring attention to these horrendous side effects and even take the company head on. There are many women who do not have the resources or courage to do so. What I don't understand is how someone with her level of resources and connections did not do indepth research on the procedure before she decided to proceed. We ourselves Google fervently, and speak to our GP and various doctor friends we have before embarking on any form of medical treatment. I hope this encourages people to find out for themselves what are the pros and cons of any treatment they may be considering. As far as her language is concerned, the words Linda uses may seem jarring to today's ears, but would not be out of place in the vocabulary she was used to in her younger years. It's something she uses without realisation, so excuse her for that. People are so much more mindful nowadays.

I'm glad she did come out with her story though because so many celebrities, even ones in their twenties, get liposuction or coolsculpting and say it's diet and exercise. They're why those fitness influencers get away with selling the myth that you can target certain parts of your body. I do think coolsculpting's success in recent years has been in part due to the demand for noninvasive procedures, but so many people don't think about how those procedures can still produce significant side effects.

I'm really not a fan of some people separating people into their bodies and their 'external packaging', because it fails to acknowledge that we are a social species, and more than that, a visual species, i.e it's our main sense we use to perceive and make sense of the world. Our second most important senses are hearing and touch. What I'm saying here is that our bodies aren't some secondary value thing about us. Our bodies CANNOT be divorced from our personalities. Our entire personality is dependent on our body, and how it behaves and is perceived in the physical space we occupy. When I'm not looking my best, when I'm in pain, when my body is tired, my mind is affected. Hormones are a thing. When my body is healthy and looks and performs the way I find optimal, I am happy, I feel capable. If bodies aren't a part of our personality, explain then humans' (and actually all higher animals') enjoyment of dance. Birds do their dances to screw. One of my cats has developed a particular wall-running technique she does for joy, and she's getting better and better at it because she seems to enjoy it, and her personality shows through it. And humans? We love watching others dance. We love expressing ourselves through dance. We love seeing bodies in motion. Our bodies reflect our mental state, and our mental state is affected by our bodies. So it makes sense that when someone's body gets dunked on for whatever reason, it will affect the 'personality' too. It's not shallow to worry about the looks and function of your body, because YOUR BODY is literally your input-output device. And when your body is perceived poorly, or when you yourself don't enjoy what you see, then it's not shallow at all to worry about your looks and performance. I have my own issues. I've never enjoyed being short or particularly feminine-looking, but unfortunately that's what my body looks like. This has given me body dysphoria. I dare anybody to call me shallow for not liking the way I look. I express myself with my body. My body is not allowing to express some things about my personality that I'd really like to communicate, which in turn leads people to perceive me and treat me in ways I don't want to be treated. So say what you want about Linda Evangelista - feeling disfigured, especially since she has such a literally physical job, her body is her job, is hardly shallow, and she has every right to feel that way.

First I did my tummy, then a few years later mt flanks and now I am doing tummy again but in a different area. The thing with cool sculpting is that it can only be done in pretty small patches and it usually takes more than one treatment to see results. I just kinda find it hard to believe she did these treatments and the medical staff around her didn't sound red flags and find a way to make it right. Like, you can tell if its worked in a few weeks and if anything is out of the ordinary they will call you in for a visit. Maybe the place I go has exceptional patient care.

There have been lawsuits around the concept of true informed consent, particularly with common side effects. Being handed a packet of information to read in small print is not informed consent. It's a way to mask liability. True informed consent is sitting with the patient and going through common side effects. In addition, "disfigurement" is relative. For Ms. Evangelista, the impact on her career may be truly felt due to this surgery. Her comment about an unwillingness to get out of bed for less than $10,000 is not tone deaf; it's an acknowledgement of her high worth at the time as a supermodel. The lifespan of most models' careers is quite limited, and earning a top income (like those in sports) is mainly for the young. Those earnings then spread out over a lifetime. Sure, she may not be the world's most sensitive person, and perhaps this is poetic justice for some, but I feel for her.

I think the emotional language Linda uses describes how she feels about her body now and shows how big an impact this has had emotionally. Yes to me it seems over the top and she still looks great but she has a right to be upset about the unwanted changes to her body. This definitely comes down to the info Linda was given before she had the procedure. It's great your doctors go over the risks of treatment with you. It's great you follow up and do additional reading about the treatments. The responsibility is on doctors to inform patients of the risks with a treatment. Unfortunately not all doctors do disclose the risks of a treatment and the leaflet with patients info can be vague.

If having a perfect body was her source of income, the "disfigured" is likely fairly applied, especially as a legal term to meet a particular standard of harm.

Aging doesn't suck unless you have that mindset. Sadly, I've worked with girls in their early 20s who are already getting multiple cosmetic procedures to try to stave off aging. It's nuts. The alternative to aging is early death.

Has she worked as a model in the past decade? Nothing against aging but that industry probably lost interest in her years before this. She just isn’t the super desirable model she was and that is a harsh fact, whether she got botched or not. Can’t compete with the countless 20 somethings just as capable of wearing a garment and walking a runway as she is in such a superficial field.

The real story here is that men get to age, go grey and not be shamed for not dying their hair, they don't have to spend 30 minutes slathering on makeup, they gain that beer belly and no one cares. Women are torn apart (by both men AND OTHER WOMEN) for aging or for being natural. Men are increasingly difficult to please. 35 is too old. 35 extra pounds is too fat. Trends change yet it's getting tougher and tougher for women to love themselves. We're so ashamed of being NORMAL that we put ourselves at high risk of death and deformatiy just to try to meet the standards of society and hopefully not die alone. It's so sad.

I actually think she has ever right to say that she was “brutally disfigured.” Yes, she still is probably more beautiful than the average person her body was disfigured in comparison to what it was like before and she is in a lot of pain. I really can’t fault someone whose career/ability to earn a living is entirely dependent on her looks for undergoing such a procedure. And yes, while it is expensive and technically “elective,” in her field of work it may not be entirely elective. As Swayze points out, you can’t lose fat in targeted areas with diet and exercise, but you can with liposuction or cool sculpting. I feel like a lot of the people who aren’t showing her any compassion are people who are relishing in watching someone lose their beauty. Are there people who have it worse than Linda Evangelista? Unquestionably. However, that doesn’t mean what happened to her isn’t still really shitty.

@liatm3042
@liatm3042 2 жыл бұрын
Anaphylaxis is scary but also incredibly common. It's a serious allergic reaction that you can have to anything (and about 1 in 30 people will experience it at some point). Now, I'm not exactly sure I believe the risk of getting anaphylaxis from a vaccine is 2.7%. This risk of an allergic reaction is usually closer to 2% and it logically follows that the risk of anaphylaxis will be lower. Given that nearly all people nowadays have had at least a couple dozen vaccines in their lifetime a 2.7% risk of anaphylaxis would mean that every other person would have experienced it, which is not true (obviously, if you've had an serious allergic reaction to one vaccine you're far more likely to experience an other one the cases aren't evenly distributed but still, almost 3% is high enough for it to be easily noticable). That said, you run the risk of anaphylaxis every time anything gets into your body especially if it's for the first time. Insect bites, food and common medications cause most anaphylactic reactions if not nearly all of them. When I was a teen a had an anaphylactic reaction to ibuprofen, up until that point I'd only ever taken paracetamol so I didn't know I was allergic, well I found out the hard way (good thing we lived near a pharmacy).

I got cool sculpting done once on my arms since I’ve always felt they were disproportionately larger than the rest of my body. Whenever I would add fitness back in, the rest of my body would drop fat and get that sculpted look whereas my arms would just stay the same. I’m really happy I got it done and I might do another round next year when I have some more money saved. The only annoying part is the massage they have to give you when the process is done. It hurts like a B, and I imagine it’s probably similar to having your abdomen massaged after giving birth 😂 But all in all it was a good experience, and I would do it again. The results aren’t drastic but my arms now fit into the sleeves of tops that are the right size for the rest of my torso and that gives me a lot of confidence :) It is stupid expensive though and I would find a way to breakup the payments in the future.

i think she should have been aware that there are risks to coolsculpting and honestly if they had told her "you have a 1% chance of getting this" she would have proceeded to do it anyway. i wish she would use this to talk about the beauty craze that affects supermodels as well and how it isnt needed in the first place. instead, it just comes off as crazy to me. what are those 50 million going to do? give her her old body back? no (unless she is completely broke and is trying expensive methods to get rid of it). why put yourself on the strenuous path of suing when you could simply educate people on the topic of beauty standards? cause i dont think saying this happens to one percent of people will scare a lot of them off

A civil settlement can involve more than money. It can involve the company agreeing to change things about how they inform patients of risks. Also, money motivates companies. If they have to pay out, they may change some practices to avoid similar payouts in the future. I also don’t think it’s fair to assume that if she had know the risks she would have still done the procedure.
@bluecovenalley
@bluecovenalley 2 жыл бұрын
@@caitlynwade7782 celebrities get boob jobs, nose jobs and god forbid bbls done all the time which have a much higher complication rate. the only thing the company can change is to tell patients about the risks, which they legally already have to do (usually you get these things done at a beauty doc wthat simply uses the equipment, the company that manufactures the cool sculpturing mashines doesnt even do the risk talk with you). and no one forces you to have these procedures done!

For a medical procedure it shouldn’t just be a case of being given a leaflet. They should of informed her completely of all of the major risks involved. When I got my contraceptive implant they gave me a leaflet but still went over the main risks in an appointment prior to going in for the “procedure” and then recapped when I got it put in a week later. They really should t have done all of those places as well if she hadn’t had it done before

Got to disagree with you on a couple of things and I say this as a person who used to be super slim but isn't any more, used to make my living from my looks and has had both lipo and coolsculpt, I don't believe any of Linda's changing looks are down to a procedure, they're down to weight gain and aging. Lipo of any kind is not a weight loss treatment, it's a shape changer. When I was very thin, I had the saddle bag shape on my thighs and a belly slightly out of proportion to the rest of my body. I had the saddlebags sucked out. It changed my shape and even though my thighs are now much bigger, I still don't have saddlebags. You say maybe Linda wanted to spot reduce like this but she was a supermodel. Her shape was perfect, she wasn't suddenly going to grow pockets of fat. She may not have had the results she wanted but, like me, I'm guessing that if she list 30-50lb, she'd look pretty much like her old self again. I think she was looking for a quick fix and it didn't happen and she's embarrassed at her weight gain. I get it, so am I, but I don't blame other people for it.
