So I just faced the same winter conditions that you had at first but mall the winter trails by me are heavily multi-use trails. Anything from moose postholing where they feel like it, to dog walkers, to runners and fat tire bikers. After fresh snowfall every user is looking for path of easiest effort which is not the best combo is days after your temps warm up the next drop below 0 F. Today I ran in -10 F on narrow postholed, rock hard path bc sides were randomly postholed. It would be easier to run on top of unpacked cold layer of 3 inches but no trail was spared. Tonight it was Salomon Speedcross 5. It was not a great experience. Good grip but high heel drop and relatively narrow soles makes it very unstable shoe on uneven, had surfaces. My knees were taking beating from instability more than lack of flex. Either way, I find La Sportiva Mutant much more stable and having same grip but they little of stiff side too which makes me thinking, if La Sportiva made Mutant with sole softness of Akashi it would be a winner for me. I love Akashi for summer gnarly mountain running. It is absolutely the best shoes for me on trails with lots of rocks. Despite fabric looking beefy, my feet do not get hot in them unlike Speedcross. They discontinued Akashi for few years and I am so glad they brought them back. I just wish it was in turquoise looking color like in a past and not cream ( woman’s version ). As far as Mutant, it has interesting overlapping flap and very securely wraps around the angle area so even though it is not GTX the fabric doesn’t get my feet wet ( I spray waterproof stuff on them every so often). I do not like to have build in spikes due to lack of versatility, instead( don’t laugh, it really works for me) I use cheap micro spikes from Costco that come with Velcro strap over the top. It worked like a charm for the past 3 winters. They never slipped off and they are light weight. I love them. I originally used Kahtoola Nano spikes and I hated how heavy they were and hard to put on and take off on a run, but everyone has their own favorite set up. Tonight I just sat down to search for softer cushion shoes but with the same Mutant stability that would have a good winter traction and your video came up. All reviews on winter running trail shoes are on from people who live on mostly flat lands or who consider 25-35 F temps, winter. The search is on.
