QOD: a few years ago when I initially returned to running, I went out during a massive snow storm late at night for a run. This run ended up being the single most peaceful run I’ve done to date. It was snowing hard, but it was not windy or extremely cold. Not a single vehicle or other person was out that night and the snow was soft and fluffy. I had the north end of the city roads where I lived all to myself and it was so quiet it was as though I was meditating while in motion. 🙏🏻

I ran my first half marathon, the virtual Hypothermic Half, last February (2021), at age 59. It was well-named, with a starting temperature of -9°C with -17°C wind chill and a 27 km wind. I ran it on a 2 km loop in a local subdivision with sidewalks on both sides of the street so I could jump on the sidewalk in case of traffic. There was snow and ice on the sidewalks from a recent snowfall, but the street was mostly clear. And to boot, the loop had an elevation gain of about 14 m per loop, so a total of 144 m of elevation gain according to Strava. I left my water/electrolyte bottle on a power transformer by the sidewalk and by the time I was more than half done, it had frozen solid so no more liquid intake! In spite of all of that, I managed to beat my goal time by almost 2 minutes at an average pace of 6:20/km! And yes to pineapple on pizza of any kind, not just with ham!

I regret to say that I grew up near Naples, Italy, which is the hometown of modern pizza, and if you put pineapple on pizza there you might risk jail time 🤣 (just kidding... have you ever visited? I think you would enjoy running along the seafront there)

I have the original version of this called the Salomon Snowcross 1 from 2013. I find the drop a little much and somewhat snug in the forefoot but I actually still put them on for the occasional winter run and love how locked in the shoe feels. I did find the shoe eventually lost it’s waterproof ability and has some shoe goo on it, but still functions fine otherwise. I now have the La Sportiva Blizzard which has a bit more forgiving ride and bit better traction which is another great option for those nasty winter days!

I was stationed in New Jersey and was traveling out to New Mexico back in the late 1990s. At the airport I bought a running magazine which had an article about the high altitude training the Kenyan runners were doing. I took my Nike Air Minot high top, Gortex shoes up to 10,000 feet in the Sandia Mountains. I ended up crawling on top of the snow to keep from sinking in. I was at my anaerobic threshold just while crawling along. I finally found some guys with snow shoes and started walking in their foot steps. It was an epic day/run that turned into a crawl, but I made a substantial deposit in my mental toughness account.

QD: Not a story per say. But I remember running Dumple Dell Trail in Salt Lake Utah a couple winters back. The snow was about 6 in deep when I arrived and was still coming down in big, slow drifting, thumbnail sized flakes. No one, and I mean no one, else was out there. And there’s something about running when it’s still snowing that makes everything sound muffled and quiet. So, all you can hear is the sound of your own breathing and the crunch of snow under foot. It just had this amazing eerie sensation of being on another planet. I just remember thinking before I got out of my car, “This is going to be a miserable 5K.“ But it ended up being a magical, transcendental experience. I extended the run to 5 miles, because I was just loving the views and scenery so much. Who needs their toes when they have memories like that, right?

QD: Was sick for two days and finally felt energetic heading into an evening, so I geared up for a midnight run in the hills overlooking the town I live in. It was mid-winter, cold, pitch black out and there was a ton of new snowfall. I made it up to the lookout in about an hour and turned my headlamp off to take in the view overlooking the town. As I was doing that, in the darkness I heard a stick break about 30 yards behind me. I turned on my headlamp and looked back and all I could see was 4 sets of eyes fixated on me. Immediately my mind told me, “those are monsters, we gotta go!” I broke out my pocket knife and ran down the hill back to my truck as fast as I could. Maybe the most scared I’ve ever been! They we’re probably deer. 😂

QD: living in northern Alberta, have ran in just about any winter conditions! Last month I was out on a nearby trail in -30C temp. My headlamp died because of the cold so was in the dark. Then saw two moose jumping on the trail in from of me. Used to see deer and foxes but never was that close to a moose. Those animals are giants!! They went off and finished my run….all good! Onward and Upward PS: not pineapple on pizza for me!!

I've got the Spikecross 5 GTX version of these and they have absolutely the best grip I have had in the spike shoes. Love them and I use them every day because the roads are like ice skating ways. Just remember to get bigger size than normal to fit more socks inside to prohibit cold toes.

Qd: last year I managed my first snow run. The day after a marathon I was driving back to my home city and stop at a skifield... It was amazing.... Luckily good weather as I ran in a long sleeve shirt and shorts and only sense ride 3s. It took me an hour to get the just over 3kms up to the main chairlift via the back country, punching through knee high snow with ice on top and less 20mins back down, 'skiing', sprinting and hoping I wouldnt fall over. With skiers laughing at me, being amazed by what I was doing and even the ski patrol team giving me a cheer... It was hilarious and... Dangerously unsafe given if I had hurt myself I would have gotten very cold, very fast....next time I'll plan to do it because it was so much fun! PS. The addition cost of those shoes is partly going to be due to the significant smaller market for that type of shoe

QD: oh without a doubt best winter running story was back in high school. My school was right next to a zoo so one day during the winter off season my team decided to do a few miles through the zoo on one of the free admission days. About a mile into the run we were going along side the wolf exhibit. Looking over we realized the wolves were running right along with us, kicking up snow as they went along. Was just one of those random things that made a regular run memorable for years

QD: This is my first winter running consistently and this week I took it to the next level and did not move my 10 mile run to the treadmill during a winter storm. During my run the snow became the heavy with -20F windchill. The most challenging part of the run was when the wind created the snow drifts and I was alternating stepping in a foot of snow to no snow on the ground while also avoiding the sections with ice underneath. It was my first run where I was both worried about getting injured from the constant change in footing and frostbite on a lower extremity... Also, pineapple on pizza is delicious. My post long-run meal this week is going to be woodfire pineapple and American bacon pizza that has full pineapple rings on the pizza.

I got the same shoes, and I agree they are incredibly durable, build quality, very cool looking color combo, good grip on icy surfaces but on the other hand, they are extremely firm, stiff and the 10mm drop is very intrusive, it feels like running on high heel lady's shoes. They are perfect for hiking, but not for running.

QD: I went to Finland (Lapland) and went for a run. There was a lot of snow on the ground, but I had no fear I was was wearing my new Inov 8 X-Talon shoes. I found this awesome trail, perfectly flat with strange looking tracks on it. I was happily running along the trail when several Finnish people came towards me on cross country skis yelling in what I assumed was Finnish at me. I had no idea what they were saying, so I kept going. Then another group came, they did not yell, they used some universal hand gestures. I quickly jumped off of the lovely trail and back into the heavy snow. I later learned I was running on a classic cross country skiing trail. Something cross country skiers don’t take too kindly to. For the rest of the trip, I stuck to the roads for running.

Winter running story - trail half with a ton of switchbacks up a mountain. It had to -25 Celsius. But it was like 50, 2 days before. All these bikes had gone through the trial and their tire tracks had frozen. It was a tough go trying to put a foot down and it was just so cold ! It was the slowest, hardest trail race I have ever done.

Yes pineaple! 😆 I've got the Salomon Spikecross, very similar to this. Best shoe for winter trails here in Nittedal, Norway. It gets either snowy on trails here or extremely icy. It grips everything. I did a trail tempo run on the most icy trail I have ever ran and in similar tempo as summer trail. Got it for 84 $. Extreme quality.

I've had this shoe for the winter here in the Crowsnest Pass - Southern Alberta. This shoe reminds me of a cross country boot. I have other spiked shoes - Norda and Icebug, but because they are not high tops, they are tough to justify using in snowy tougher conditions so I default to using the Solomon. The Norda and Icebug shoes fit me better that this one. The Solomon fits narrow and the drop is noticeable. Its got that euro racy look which I dislike. Overall its a good buy but if there were other shoes that were high tops, I'd be looking at those just from a fit perspective.

I have a pair of Speedcross 4s with 800+ miles on them. The lugs could still go for awhile yet but they just aren't very comfortable anymore. Good enough for mowing the lawn though! So I have no doubt that the SnowSpikes would last for 1000+ miles if you were running mainly through snow.

He would pass me on the uphills and I'd get him back on the straights and downhills (my forte). I'm leading having just passed him going into the last downhill (I got him), and 20 feet from the finish I trip and he got me. No doubt this shoe is better on foot than the adidas agravic but some of these scores seem inconsistent. You did the durometer test on the agrivic and it came in the low 50s. You destroyed it in your review for this and gave it a 4/10 for durability at 1000+ miles. Then, we get this with over a 60 durometer and you give it a 9.5/10 with the same durability predictions. Confused by this to be honest.
