Problem with that is Permanent Waves wasn't released until Jan 1980. I did see Max Webster, then UFO open for Rush in Memphis on Oct, 30 1977. Then we had Rush in 78 with Starz opening (front row center - no shit)!.

@@RockNRoller66 I stand corrected! It must have been Hemispheres. I know it was at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Newberg NY. Kim had these giant harem pants on. I'm a retired educator, but spent a decade managing and producing a progressive instrumental 'shredder' through the mid '90's/2000's. My time away from the school was steeped in the music scene; I was also a contributing writer for a Dallas music paper, "The Harder Beat." It was fun, because I was able to choose my subjects. Pat Travers, another favorite Canadian guitarist, was playing a local club this night, and when I dropped by during the day to arrange my interview, I left a CD by the artist I was managing. In speaking with Pat after his show, one of his first comments was "I really don't get what these shredders see in me." While I empathize with Kim's bout of nerves, I have no doubt LaBrie saw something in Kim he couldn't get from Petrucci. Great interview, Craig, you have a new sub. You're the best I've seen on YT (and elsewhere) at what you're doing. Kim, wonderful to see you back!

It's so strange that Kim doesn't seem to like Kimosabe as that's one of my favourite Kim Mitchell albums. Maybe, its due to the period and his memories. I saw him in 1998 at Alice Fazooli's restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario. He had his then famous pink hat on and he was talking to a very nice looking brunette at the bar. I wanted to say hello, but it was his private time and after hearing this interview that would have been during those rough times, so I'm glad I didn't. Kim & Peter Fredette made some of the best music to come out of Canada. Peter Fredette doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's the other vocalist in "All We Are". Wonderful interview. One of the reasons he is the guitarist’s guitarist; he has amazingly fluid playing (in the 70’s few guys could play with the flow and speed he could) but he didn’t do the overboard ego-driven solos of other “guitar gods.” His solos were about the song; fit in perfect, not pointless showboating. Total class.

Kim's "Ain't Life..." album was in constant play in my car and I know it helped me get through it all! I really resonate with the challenge of getting through struggles and what it takes to get to the other side. I've always loved his music either with Max Webster or on his own, which I discovered around 1979, but to hear his story and the frank and unabashed discussion about it in this interview kicked my respect up for him exponentially. Had a funny moment with Kim Mitchell back in the 80s, I was in a band that was opening for Kim Mitchell band on the tour, I was playing some stuff just before Soundcheck on guitar checking my amps and Kim is standing there, he says you seem to be getting the sound you’re going for. I said, thanks, but later I started to think that was kind of a backhanded compliment, maybe he thinks my sound stinks but that’s the sound I’m going for and I’m getting, I don’t know I just found it funny later on, his band was great on the tour

Just discovered this vid 4 years after it was posted. Great vid Craig. Long time Kim Mitchell/Max Webster fan. His guitar work is always interesting, he's a fantastic player as well as singer. His playing on Paradise Skies always stops me in my tracks. I listened to Live Magnetic Air again just the other day... I still have the vinyl. Kim seems like a humble dude. Great interviewing skills Craig, really enjoyed this interview.

Kim, my band "Arrival" opened for Max Webster in Nanaimo, BC in 1978 - we were blown away not only with the band (even before that gig), but how great you all were and your crew when it came time for our sound check. It was truly a memorable gig to this day, I believe promoted through Perriscope Productions. I'm guessing that gig convinced Perriscope folks that we could open for Tom Petty at the Commodore in Vancouver after that. Congratulations on your Hall of Fame induction!

i had a friend dave davies who introduced me to kim back in the max webster days at a place called the playpen more commonly known as the PIG PEN at dawes and danforth ave in toronto. dave was a lead guitar player too , and was always so facinated how kim was able to play lead riffs behind his back with his guitar. i remember kim to be a wild party back in those crazy days of the 70s., and his album I AM A WILD PARTY was the kim i remember meeting and loving all his music , so canadian.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar you are very welcome , this brought back so many memories of max webster playing at my highschool , playing the pig pen on danforth avenue , and also sad memories of friends no longer here. i was very fortunate in my life of having friends in bands playing in toronto , some are still playing today in their 70s , the thought of retiring for them is just not there , they live to play until their dying days. i was very fortunate to live through the music of the late 60s and early 70s , such great times.
