I still get goosebumps every time I hear Gail Ann singing "why can't we give love one more chance " from Under Pressure on the Reality tour, and up until then never thought it possible that anyone could pull off those vocals. To this day, even though it's not easy to find the video, indulge yourself, it's better than the original. Great interview, thank you, you are a very good host!

I saw Gail Ann Dorsey singing with Bowie doing 'Under Pressure' three times and each time I said, she one ups Freddie Mercury! And then consider she's playing that funky bass line at the same time she's singing, I don't think Freddie could pull that off. My favorite versions of U.P. are with GAD & DB.
@greenogre227 ай бұрын
well, firstly gail ann dorsey is a woman as you know i guess whereas freddie mercury is a man. do you remember? if you compare those two you should be aware of this fact and recognize the differences between female and male voices. secondly as freddie mercury pulled it off obviously on the records in an outstanding way it is even more worth of being recognized because it is considered to be harder for a man‘s voice. gail ann dorsey has got one wonderful voice with its own timbre and has done this song more than justice and freddie would approve for sure but nothing goes over the original, sorry. it‘s simply too good with freddie mercury and his many timbres.

I'm a Belgian guy, no longer very young, 38 years old. I've been a Bowie fan since I was 15, when my father gave me the "Best of Bowie" album, sensing something special in me. I never got to see Bowie live. I was supposed to go to one of his concerts at a Belgian festival, but an incident involving a lollipop thrown into his eye at a previous concert led to the cancellation of what would have been THE concert of my life. I worked as a technician at Radio France for a number of years. Bowie had been there a few years before I worked there. So I never got the chance to cross his path. I've been playing guitar since I was 10-12. By chance, my parents never wanted me to play music. I've tried my hand at violin, cello, flute, drums... I'm even currently taking classical harp lessons at the conservatory. I consider myself an average musician. I have a very good ear, I think, but I'm not technically good. It's on bass (and drums), however, that I find the most instinctive pleasure. But they never really got me into it, as if I considered it an inferior instrument. Of course, I discovered Gail Ann Dorsey with David Bowie. I'm so inspired by this kind, spontaneous and natural woman. Thank you for this long interview. It reinforces my desire to persevere and be spontaneous in my desires, and maybe one day do what I want with my life and no longer endure it in a profession that doesn't resemble me. I'm so touched to see that she, too, started modestly and achieved so much through perseverance, while remaining such a beautiful person. What a source of inspiration. Thank you!!!

So much sharing of Ms. Dorsey's life before being a musician till now is mind blowing. Being a collector of typewriters is a good thing too keeping up with those finger touching. Terry is getting up there in age but he's still performing. I'd always loved his work in the 1970's. This woman's story - the things that inspired her in her childhood, etc. sounds just like my own experience - except she did something with it. I taught myself to play listening to Wheels of Fire, and the first real concert was in 1971 - Glass Harp, Cactus and Grand Funk Railroad. My first guitar was a $45 noname from a Acme/Click store. A couple of years later I bought a Gibson SG with one black plastic pickup (P90?) and had a fixed broken neck. This guitar came through a guy named Rich Underwood, who had jammed with Hendrix.

The first thing she said, which really stuck out was the bit about her Mom always having the radio on the same thing in my house. I won't bore you, but living in the Akron/Cleveland area, late 60s early 70s was a gem of a place to be into music. One night in '72, while hitching home to Munroe Falls, I got picked up by Glenn Schwartz, the guy that quit James Gang , to be replaced a while later by Joe Walsh. By this time, though he was from Cleveland, he had been in Pacific Gas and Electric. We sat across from my house for about 20 minutes while he called me out for my sins so I could repent - to him. We hitched up to Cleveland one Saturday to hang out at the WNCR studio (program director Billy Bass, credited with breaking Hunky Dory onto America). Speaking of Carlie Watts, our older son Andy played Charlie as an extra in the movie Cadillac Records. What a great interview you have brought us!@@EveryoneLovesGuitar

Yes, I love “Always True!” But to be honest I love that entire album, “I Used to Be.” Some days I put that album on loop and play it over and over and over again. She is so talented and appears to be such a kind and genuine individual.
