describing people as the “glue” that holds you together, even when you think you’re about to break because of all that workload and stress is so. hecking. accurate. My roommate is the only reason I haven’t dropped out yet. We’re both doing a double degree in medical engineering and mechatronics and she’s basically a safety net. She drags me out of our room to cook dinner, goes to bed at 11pm straight, making it impossible to pull all-nighters and she is the one who laughs whenever we don’t understand something and as someone who is very prone to questioning my entire existence whenever I don’t understand something I’m working on that balance is worth a million.

Also i’ve read a bit about how San Francisco portrays a fake “We love diversity” attitude when in reality racism runs deep through the city. So whatever you’ve been able to learn and observe, would be really interesting to hear about.
@mariegail5 жыл бұрын
I’m from San Francisco. I think it’s cause corporations and America is inherently racist within their institutions obviously, San Francisco would be no exception. The reason why it’s perceived the way it is is due to the demographic that lives within San Francisco, we’re just a giant melting pot of the whole world. So within the communities itself, and the culture of the individual people, we’re used to seeing people of all colors.

A little tip that I found helpful for undergrad: "You don't have to do everything". School balance is about recognising and optimising your health and productivity. Going to 2 theatre shows, a dinner, a school club, etc and then having to stay up till 3am to finish an assignment is difficult. Sometimes your friends may be going out a lot, or there's just so many things to do or you will get FOMO - but you don't HAVE to do them all, especially if it would deteriorate your health. Everyone balances differently, and sometimes you may just have to cut back on outings to balance better. It's much better to briefly stay in, prioritise finishing the assignment at 6pm and then going out for a late dinner to celebrate with friends! Sometimes it's okay to miss out on a few things to prioritise your sleep and health.

You've legit grown up so much since the beginning - its inspiring to watch. That stuff you were saying about complex systems sounds really really interesting - might have to look into it. I love hearing about what you're learning because it's so interesting to draw comparisons with my own degree. The variation in what you're studying is amazing; kudos to you for keeping up with that insane amount of work (research always takes way more time then you think its going to). How are you getting on with deciphering papers? I always find it tricky starting research on a new topic because I have no grounding and then you're expected to know what all this jargon within the paper means. That you only have two days to discover all this stuff and actually write a paper on it is mental. I've actually missed your videos so much. It's so nice to hear about what you're up to when you're out in the world exploring and being hella active. Recently I've been applying to grad programs (not in Natural sciences though) and every good university lists a number of core subjects you have to cover during your undergrad. As an Economist I had to take sequences of courses in Math, Micro, Macro and Econometrics. I wonder how Minerva graduates with less conventional curriculum bypass this requirement when applying to grad school?
@RoseAllDayyy5 жыл бұрын
ВитВит Елис they pick a major in second year so presumably the core courses for each particular major will be covered off. Minerva students do end up graduating with a B.A. or a B.Sc. . I don’t think their degree structure is any more unusual than other US universities necessarily, it’s more the teaching method that is novel/experimental.

So exciting to finally hear what your courses and asignments actually are! They seem very well adjusted and useful in most jobs, and it is amazing how much you’ve learned so early on. As a 3rd year student of cognitive science at more traditional uni I feel like learning things similar to what you’re describing took me about 3 semesters, so I really see how this kind of projects are more valueable than regular lectures and exams. Data analysis in python is extremely useful in any kind of research and I promise, it gets easier with experience!! Complex systems also seem like a great opportunity to look at problems that you find interesting in a structured way. My point is - you defenitelly should be confident in your decision to study at Minerva because (from my perspective) it for sure will help you gain unique understanding of the world and science. I’m really happy for you 🧡🧡☺️ As it comes to social life in Minerva, it still sounds exhausting to me as I’m definetelly more introverted, but from what you’re saying I can see that there is more than one way to attempt socializing there! I’ve been watching your channel for what has been 2 years so far I think, but this is my first time commenting. I think it's important to keep in mind that there is probably less carry over towards "most jobs" in that the courses are well "adjusted and useful" - for those pursuing a science degree, there are no science labs and no curriculum at Minerva that matches the requirement of most grad programs in the sciences. Traditional universities with set locations have mandatory labs which teach practical skills and prepare students for research and work in the sciences after they graduate. I'm not sure if you can really learn (in the same way you can at other places) the hands on required skills for this kind of work from Skype calls a few times a week but no practical application of the skills. I think if you genuinely want to pursue sciences, a traditional university offers more practical knowledge and education. It's not clear how you would apply to a graduate program without having the mandatory undergraduate courses, or undergraduate research skills, and how if you got there, how you would be apply to keep up with what you have not learned because you went to a travelling university.

I really am excited for what this school is gonna bring to the workforce. They really push everyone to do their best. The people speaking about changenaking and what they want to bring about in the future and seeing how modest and amazing they are is so beautiful. Its such priviledge to be around real, true people. I went on an exchange to brazil to learn stem subjects alongside people form about 15 countries. The program was oriented around changemaking. I had 3 roommates and we stayed there for about a month. Six assignments does seem like a lot but the fact that the students kind of have to come up with their own research question, solutions, etc. is normal at university level. However, there should be lecturers or tutors available to give you some feedback in the process. Even my university can afford that and we don't have a lot of funds.

I go to Exeter and the assignment you described is something that I have had to do and is expected of us. With respect, the way you explained it comes across as though you assumed that yours is a worse assignment and 'harder' than typical universities- this is simply not true. It does seem as if you are trying to make Minerva seem superior to other universities, which isn't right or true. I'm trying to be constructive and not insulting and overall I do enjoy your channel, but i have started to see this view as a bit of a current running theme and it isn't fair. Edit- you say you have a life coach as if universities in the UK but what you describe the life coaches to be is exactly the same as Tutors, which the vast majority of universities in the UK have. My tutors purpose is exactly as you described the life coaches to be and there are only 7 people assigned to him in my year and so it is very personal. I think you are very set on detaching Minerva from British universities, but you really need to come to terms with the fact that it is not that different at all.

Hi jade! I've been watching your videos for a year. I haven't had time to watch the whole video as I have finals! But I wanted to put this comment out just to say that I think what you're doing is so amazing! And so brave. I also took a gap year and eventually ended up at a UK university. I'm in my third year on a study abroad in America and OMG the culture shock was insane! I literally didn't expect to feel homesick at all! But it's actually been quite hard and I'm quite the introvert so making friends is so tough! I think you should be super proud of what you've achieved so far though! I've loved watching your videos about being abroad. My study abroad coincided with your first time here too so it's almost as if I feel justified in struggling through hearing about your experiences so far?! A new country, higher education and being alone is not always as glamorous as it may seem but your videos this year have really helped me, I feel like I'm basically sharing my experiences with a friend! It's a weird sort of "I'm not alone thing" I don't think I made much sense at all here but just wanted to say thank you for sharing your experience, and as a girl literally in a very similar position, I truly get how hard the transition must have been and just wanted to say you're doing amazing!!

Just wanted to add a comment about the workload. I can give a good comparison because I've been to a UK university the last two years. It's way easier than the workload over here. The assignments here are weekly and there's midterms every like 4 weeks! It's stressful as hell, especially going from doing exams basically worth 80-100% at the end of the year. Weekly work also means that there is less time to do things during the week and everyone is under alot of stress all the time. Also just wanted to add that its harder to get good grades because an A is like 90% Compared to a 1st in the UK which is 70 😭

So far I have to agree with everything you said. I'm studying veterinary medicine and the workload is a lot! But the people here are just so supportive and everyone is in the same situation and helps everyone. I appreciate that so much and I would've loved to have that supportive feeling during Alevels or generally in other aspects of life.

Hi Jade! I just completed my final semester of uni, As a web / programming student. I also struggled with programming (Im still not super confident in my ability to program but Python was my favorite) I found resources like solo learn and code academy really helpful. Good luck with the rest of your semester.
