Some people consider masculine animate and masculine inanimate in Slavic as separate genders, though in Russian animacy affects only the accusative (Czech and Polish are a bit different). There are a few animate neuters, such as дитя, насекомое, и млекопитающее.

I'm just getting started on studying Russian by myself and I wonder why sometimes I see the name of a man (both first and last name) written in femenine, written with an "a" at the end. How does it get modified? It's very confusing to me.

Russian cases thing. In genitive case, male gender get -A at the end. I don't have fridge - У меня нет холодильникA. Vladimir Putin doesn't have a sister -У ВладимирА ПутинА нет сестры. I'm affraid of Vladimir Putin- Я боюсь Владимира Путина. In accusative case ,male gender but only for living beings get -A at the end. I know Putin -Я знаю Путина. I love John and Putin- Я люблю Джона и Путина.

@@meimei47878 So guys called ivan dont get triggered by listening someone talk: -i know ivana? In portuguese we dont flex name of people, cities, etc. I can imagine Russian tourists speaking names in russian and making people confuse.
@zhulikkulik
@zhulikkulik 2 жыл бұрын
@@chicof5031 yep, it's fine for us as long as the correct version of the name is used. Besides, most our names aren't really paired. I mean... some of them have pairs, but usually there's a clear difference, like Антон - Антонина, Василий - Василиса, Олег - Ольга. Some names don't have any pair at all, like Андрей, Николай, Матвей for men and Анастасия, Елена, Мария for women. Some names are paired tho: Александр - Александра, Валентин - Валентина, Валерий - Валерия, Евгений - Евгения, Мирослав - Мирослава, Юлий - Юлия, Ян - Яна. And as I said - it's important you choose the right version of the name because their cases have same endings, but they're used in a different order and that's how we understand that you're talking about a man or a woman. P.S. There's no such name as Ivana in Russian. Joanna - yes, it's Иоанна. And that a very old pair Иоанн - Иоанна, but nobody names their sons Иоанн anymore, so it's not a problem)

@alexeygerasimov5976
@alexeygerasimov5976 4 жыл бұрын
You change the adjective, no matter where it is placed, before or after an object, so in sentence "лошадь-большая" (horse is big) adjective is first word, but ending is changed to follow gender of object

This here is one of the very few discrepancies of Russian pronunciation and writing. If a noun in genitive case ends with "го", you pronounce it as "vo".

What if someone used they/them?
@Ajoura
@Ajoura 3 жыл бұрын
They/them is strictly plural in Russian. If you're unsure, you write him/her. With me actually being Russian, I always kept wondering why English-speaking people use "they" as singular, and if there's such a rule, why couldn't they use "he" as plural.
@zhulikkulik
@zhulikkulik 2 жыл бұрын
We don't use it like you do. Traditionally, at least. It's strictly plural in Russian. «Вы» («you») is also plural but it can also be singular though. It's a formal way to address people. For example «Анна Ивановна, вы просили подойти к вам после уроков» «Anna Ivanovna, you asked me to come to you after school». In this case «вы» is a respectful way to address someone you're not familiar with, someone who's older, or higher in hierarchy. I.e. your boss, or an old neighbor, or someone you just met.
