I think the takeaway from this film is that "nothing matters" doesn't have to be a nihilistic point of view. "Nothing matters" can also be a hopeful point of view. Since "nothing matters", be who you and what you want, and accept others for who and what they are.
@soulscyther666 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, two ways of coping existential crisis. Pessimistic Nihilism vs. Optimistic Absurdism. End everything along with your suffering or embrace the absurd (enjoy life). The final conversation in BoJack Horseman also told the same theme: BoJack: Life's a bitch and then you die, right? Diane: Sometimes. Sometimes life's a bitch and then you keep living. BoJack: Yeah. Diane: But it's a nice night, huh? BoJack: Yeah. This is nice. I included the last bit after the opposing exchange of ideals because it also meant that life may be shitty and it's how you deal with it, but for now "it is a nice night" meaning cherish the present and there's still hope that maybe tomorrow will be just as nice.

I think the bagel symbolises nothingness and hopelessness, but the googly eye symbolises the Third Eye as understood in Hinduism. The protagonist also wears the googly eye in the position of the third eye. In Hindu cosmology, Creation is Lila - Divine Play. Based on how I read the corresponding interviews, the ADHD portion was a bit different than how you state it here. - I'd have to reread them to be sure, but this is how I remember the story: - The Daniels planned the story - Eventually they thought "what if she got undiagnosed ADHD" - they had concerns about that being insensitive - but then, as they did more research to see whether it could work Daniel Kwan realized he has ADHD which hadn't been diagnosed yet - they never said they dropped that idea. It's simply not explicitly mentioned at any point. But as somebody with ADHD - c'mon, she TOTALLY has ADHD. So extremely ADHD that she gets distracted away from her current reality into jumping around in the multiverse. It works so well. I don't think any person with ADHD would be likely to say this comparison is insensitive. I mean it's over the top, but, like, so is the entire movie!

2 things that I’ve noticed that I’ve been dying for someone else to chime in about…. The urn Alpha Waymond is holding! As he is dying he is holding an urn and it is also featured when Evelyn’s mind breaks (the urn is screaming)…. I believe this is the remains of Alpha Evelyn who died and he cherishes so dearly. Take a look and see what you think. Also a few time there is a cut scene of Evelyn and Joy in the RV. It is first featured when Evelyn first jumps in the elevator with Waymond. It is a powerful cut because I personally believe this is the moment that Joy told her mother that she was gay. About two-thirds into the movie, I told the person I was watching it with, "I think this is my new favorite movie." And once it was over, I had no doubt.

Dude I'm 32 and I said almost the exact same thing to my fam and girlfriend. Favorite movie of all time hands down and not even followed closely by any other. For me it wasn't just another flick. It was an honest to God experience and gave me faith that there are still amazing movies to be watched and made.

I’m 34 and I always said titanic because come on. It’s excellent but I truly never changed it for that reason. Once I saw EEAAO, I was truly speechless and I still cry just thinking about it even though I saw it a few months ago lol. Truly a favorite of mine

There was this one particular movie I saw when I was in my teens that I thought was the funniest movie ever made. I laughed so hard I slid off my theater seat onto the floor. A few decades later I invited a lady that [I had recently begun] dating to my house to watch that movie. I thought we'd have a great laugh together. Talk about a flop. It was embarrassing. I could see her thinking, "you actually think this is funny?" That was the last date we ever had. So remember this story because twenty years from now your sensibilities might have changed.

I didn't miss that the business suit version of Waymond was 'quiet and unwavering like a fox' because I have never heard a fox described like that ever.

Surprised no one mentioning the small easter egg when Waymond says “very funny” its an indiana jones reference.

The lines that go together for me are -- Martial arts trainer: "Even this cookie can be Kung Fu." CEO Waymond: "This is how I fight."
@danieldorfsman9093 Жыл бұрын
“This is how I fight” is a very relatable line for me. I’ve often heard people tell me that I’m too nice. But it’s worked out for me and I believe in kindness. I believe it’s the reason I’ve experienced so much kindness in my life. I see so many people walking around with anger and negativity. It must be an uncomfortable way to live

The Bagel and Googley eyes are also a resemblance to Yin-Yang. One has everything but a hole inside, Googley eyes is nothing but something inside. On the side note, the cookie is both elements combined.
@amandasutton3717 Жыл бұрын
I also think there's some importance with the symbolism of the pig. Off of Waymond's fanny pack, there's a little San-Rio style stuffed pig, and one of the first instances Evelyn sees Jobu, she's in her Elvis suit walking a pig. The symbolism of the pig or boar in Chinese mythology is that they represent wealth and good luck, but also being realistic and pragmatic/practical.

The circular mirror showing the laughing family at the beginning of the movie changes to a window that leads to another verse where our current Evelyn is.

In fact by never naming adhd, it becomes even more of a powerful story of someone living with undiagnosed and untreated adhd.
@danieldorfsman9093 Жыл бұрын
My favorite freeze frame is a reference to my favorite show twin peaks. Evelyn is dressed as Laura Palmer doing the meanwhile pose. Being a huge twin peaks nerd I was thrilled to see that. Also twin peaks deals with the multiverse, particularly in the 3rd season
@Van-Leo2 жыл бұрын
wow, i was actually expecting for the movie to take the adhd rout in some way, i dont remember where exactly in the movie i thought that, but i felt it. im working on getting a diagnosis myself and struggling with a lot of the symptoms, but knowing that this movie has adhd in its dna is really cool to hear!

AH but nooo! you missed 9:09 the best matrix reference of how Evelyn scoots around the IRS office when Bagel Deirdre is coming after her! It's identical to how Neo crawls between cubicles while on the phone with Morpheus!

You know it’s an incredible movie when no one asks for a sequel. It’s that good 🥵

This isn't an Easter egg or anything but I think my favorite single line in the movie is when Evelyn says "But she's my daughter!" and Alpha Gong Gong replies "And she's my granddaughter, how do you think I feel?" James Hong absolutely positively nails that line. In that one moment we get to see the emotional impact that this is having on him but also the incredible level of control and self-sacrifice is character is experiencing. It's a great line and scene and James is able to communicate so much in those few seconds because he's James Hong ❤❤❤

5:10, as a Taiwanese myself, that is how I punctuated the title - and I think it’s perfectly blending the double meaning of the title and the craziness. And I am NOT joking…. ^_^ 6:15 According to Michelle Yeoh, Evelyn was actually ‘Michelle’ when the daniels sent her the original script.
@shayneweyker2 жыл бұрын
Naming the protagonist Michelle would be a pretty big reference to John Malkovitch playing a version of himself in Being John Malkovitch. I'm glad they didn't do it because it would be distracting from the story.

Honestly, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. I am more and more sick of new Hollywood movies that are soo average and not original at all. Unfortunately EEAAO is also very hard to recommend to someone who is not a movie freak. But for us, who see many references and have that smile and tear of happiness whole movie, it's a pleasure!

I'm not big into movies. To the point where even though I love sci fi (...books), I've never seen the matrix. I still loved this movie. I noticed the ADHD but thought they were going for "typical middle aged woman pulled in many directions." Interesting. Another overall influence was Buckaroo Bonzai in the tone of some of the scenes, especially the Alphaverse van. A couple from a Chinese couples' YT reaction: the family name is spelled Wang but pronounced "Wong", but Deirdre keeps saying "Mrs. WAAAHNHG" in that grating voice of hers--not to be irritating, but it's typical of the insensitivity some people have. The song Waymond sings while sweeping up glass is now sung at Spring festivals, but was originally sung to celebrate the end of the Japanese invasion.

Another thing that the googly eye on Evelyn's forehead symbolise is the concept of third eye I think, that once a person achieves true Nirvana, it opens their third eye, and they can see EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
