This van needs some serious TLC before we start our next big adventure to Tasmania. Vanlife in the Australian outback took its toll on all three of us and we need to get back to Melbourne to fit our new solar panels, get a replacement drone, fix up some mechanical and cosmetic issues on dingo. But fixes things on a van is not our strong suit, we can build one, but our track record on "improvements" leaves a lot to be desired, so let's see if letting me loose with a paint can was a terrible idea! Its very surreal being back in the Bunnings where this all began and back in Steves warehouse, its like nothing has changed but also everything feels different!
Huge thankyou again to Bluetti for providing us with an AC70 to give away to one of you guys!

⤈ WHO WE ARE ⤈
We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute, we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But then we were back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire!! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and made our way to Japan. We enjoyed a three-month Japanese Adventure and then got back to Martha for some new European Adventures. After an incredible three-month Scottish road trip, we packed up our van and headed to Australia for a new van life adventure! Here we bought and built our new van in only 30 days and then took him deep into the Australian outback and beyond!

I'm heading towards Sydney next so, who knows, maybe we'll cross paths again down the road one day...🫰 Oh and Dingo is looking schmick! 👌You guys are legends!❤ I've been carrying a jerry can for the past 4 & 1/2 years and guess how many times I've used it? Never! 😂

How do you find caravaning in Australia? I've been homeless in Sydney since July '22 and currently saving for a van to kit out. I feel like it can be more stealth in a van. I've heard campsites can be expensive, especially on the coast. Also, I'd love to meet up with you guys if you come through Sydney. I'm in the north western suburbs (Carlingford) to be near my son.❤️

There are sooo many beautiful free camps in victoria and tasmania. South Australia wasnt as good or Northern Territory for free places with facilities. I would be interested to hear your experience in NSW when you do it. You can basically go live for free in Tasmania, alot of their campsites have a 30 day limit, in Victoria its usually like 72 hours so you would have to move a lot more often.

The problem with living in a caravan in Australia is, you cannot park any vehicle over 7.5m or 4.5 tonne in a "built up area" (e.g. any non-rural area with houses, stores, street lights) for more than an hour or you risk being fined. (And unhitching the two so they're shorter than 7.5m won't work with parking cops who need to fill their fine quota.) An hour goes fast when you're shopping or walking around a new town. You can obviously leave the caravan somewhere to go out in just your car for longer, but the caravan is now unattended so you have to hope no-one breaks in. It's not so much what they might steal, as it is fixing a caravan door (and maybe body/frame) someone has forced open with a tyre iron. So a caravan means you have book a parking site and most are booked out months in advance. So bad luck if you want to just travel around randomly, stop, browse an area... you MUST stick to a timetable, made months in advance, and if you don't turn up the day you're supposed to, some caretakers will assume you're not coming and give your site to someone else. If you still turn up they'll probably find a way to fit you in, but they may not be able to, too. We do have 100% free sites but they're not prolific, many of those require booking months in advance too, plus they have a time limit how many days you can stay. Fewer and fewer sites are low in price at $15 to $20 a night, most are $30 and up now. So while having the extra room of a caravan is nice, imagine having to pay an average of $200 every week just to park it. Otoh any vehicle you can drive on a standard car license (like your van) can park anywhere a car can, even overnight, as long as you're not being obvious by drawing attention to yourself by putting out camping chairs, cooking so people can see, a TV flickering at night while watching a movie, etc. e.g. You would do your cooking, watch TV, etc in one location - and at bedtime pack everything away, drive to the place you're only going to sleep at (not watch TV), have everything already packed away and windows blocked out, so any council rangers can't see you're sleeping including through the front window. Then just ignore any knocking. (If they can't fine a car for parking there overnight, and you don't answer their knocking to prove their suspicions you're sleeping inside, they don't really know if you're in a nearby house, at a nightclub, walking along a beach, etc. So you can't be fined for camping if they can't even prove you're inside.) Hint: There are vehicles on a standard car license that have more room than vans. ;-)

I have actually not had any of these issues you talk about and I've been living and travelling full-time in my caravan for almost 5 years now. I never have to park the whole rig in built up areas as I only go out after I've set up camp. I only book sites just before I get there as long as it's not in a major tourist destination and there are lots of free campsites. I have a hitch lock on my caravan and security cameras for when I'm out and about and prefer to stay whatever the maximum stay is in each place I like (usually 30 days) in remote regional locations. 😍
@phillyandkeely
@phillyandkeely 4 ай бұрын
That's all great info to be aware of. I suppose it's the same in UK which is why you never see random caravans parked on side of street 🤣🤣 depends whether you are happy to set up base camp and travel from there I suppose. I think we are vanlifers at heart, but defo tempted by a bigger van now after tiny dingo haha

@@lisawanderess Ok but are you saying much different? i.e. Unhitching, going into town in the car, leaving caravan on the site is the same... Unless you meant you feel safe doing that and haven't had break-ins, but that will depend on each area. e.g. Copy and paste this into Google: "How a night at Fitzroy Crossing left two young travellers bloodied, bruised and frightened" - I know it's cherry-picked but I read a lot of negatives about caravan and other camping areas saying the same things occur in various remote towns, especially in the NT. I live in a completely opposite kind of area, a medium-populated beachside tourist town, plenty of infrastructure like stores and police, where caravan park fees are high and booked out months in advance - and even here the theft of pushbikes and items from vehicles is commonplace. There are plenty of free sites in small or remote towns, but I had most tourists in mind, who stay a few hours, maybe overnight, then pass through on their way somewhere bigger with "stuff" to do. Most of those places are coastal, so have high demand and long waits as you said, "as long as it's not in a major tourist destination and there are lots of free campsites" - it's those places I was more referring to - major, or even just average tourist areas in peak season and either side of it. I'll have to get Wikicamps with my next phone, but there's plenty of places with no free sites too. Every now again you hear of sone closing due to abuse too - people leaving rubbish, pooping on the ground with the used toilet paper. Then there's the grey nomads with their $120K mobile cassette toilets who clog dump points with their (not) "flushable" wipes. It soon brings on closures, increased fees, or fees where they were none before. Populated or heavily populated areas don't seem to have many free overnight parking/camping. e.g. Every few months I see someone in Facebook camping/motorhome groups asking if there are any free camps between Foster, down through Newcastle and into the Central Coast areas of NSW. People reply listing only 2 or 3, none are close to the actual areas the people want to be, and iirc one is just a short lane along side the road a bit north of the town "Raymond Terrace." So those people are asking for a free site near Newcastle but there's only Raymond Terrace which must be about 40 minutes away. No-one would leave their caravan there to walk along a Newcastle beach 30-40 drive away, go to dinner, or see a movie. I was watching a video couple of days ago, a guy who leaves home in his ute on weekends to make overnight youtube videos. He went to a free site, basically was just a grassy paddock, it wasn't a populated area, but had a time limit of 7 days. Anyway... I'd like to live how are, but be able to drive into towns like Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Bateman's Bay, etc and I'd love the room a caravan provides. But I also want to be able to park in/near and walk into a ColesWorths or Bunnings, sit inside my home to read a book or practice piano, fish/swim/sit at the beach, all in view of my "home" and without paying fees just to park inside someone's fenceline (when there's a perfectly good road my taxes paid for on the outside). ;-D Personally I think vanlife is too small/restrictive long term unless touring another country cheap like Philly & Keely are. For more long term living I'm considering a pantech truck on a car license. It solves most problems. i.e. Self-contained, composting toilet, sink, shower, full size bed, lounge, plenty of solar roof space, can stand up inside, desk for a laptop/digital piano, and can park in view of the beach or supermarket and "stealth-camp" at night wherever a car can park. In free camps there will be room for visitors as you have, and in towns people wont see a $$$,$$$ motorhome and think "people sleeping" and "valuables begging to be taken." Still not 100% decided though. May I ask, do you come across many free campsites, where people tend to stay long term, get to know each other, look after each other's property, etc and if they do have to leave after x days, they either return a few days later for another block of time, or many of them move between a few sites, thus running into the same people?

@@phillyandkeely Small pantech/box truck... Car license, park mostly where cars can, luton peak for double mattress, lounge, toilet, shower, wardrobe, kitchen sink/bench, a lot more solar roof area, a lot more water storage, split system aircon, and... put a clipboard with pen on the dashboard and yellow reflective safety vest hanging from the passenger side head rest for nighttime stealth parking. Upgrade a level by putting lettering on the side with a fake number and some kind of business no-one would be interested in risking gaol for if caught thieving... like "piano removals" or "hay delivered 2U" etc that screams "Mostly empty truck." ;-D

Hi you two I’ve been watching you and love you both I don’t comment as I’m a bit shy. I’ve a van and nearly ready to travel I’ve got my cat so can’t take him in this heat waiting for cooler weather as I’ve got no way of cooling the van. I’ve no AC at all. I noticed on the Blue tti there are power points I could get a decent fan . I’m not on instagram I’m old so I’m not up to date with these things but I do live in Australia and looking forward to more of your travels so take care
