Sorry this one took SO long but I knew it wouldn't perform great on views and 2022 was really dicey revenue wise due to all of the many copyright claims and bugs I had to deal with. At any one point in time I had at least 10 on the go for a great many months last year. Really happy to finally get it out to you all now though and if you'd like to assist, a tip is greatly welcome to make up the difference in revenue and of course liking, commenting and sharing etc. Thanks for watching and for reading this and I really and truly hope that you enjoy the video!

People recognize Hiroshi Kamiya as Levi, but imo Araragi is his most iconic role. If you listen to Atogatari, an interview/podcast held by Kamiya with the VAs and their experiences with the making of the anime, you’d hear that he read all of the source material to get a good picture of the character like he was preparing for a national exam, because, and I quote, “if someone else can do what I can, I have no right to be doing this job.”

Fun fact, every opening is sung by the main girl of each arc (i.e. Senjogahara's VA sang the first OP ). Also, the 4th OP you liked, Renai Circulation, is one of the most memed anime songs ever, because of how catchy it is.

8:38 the important factor to note about this anime (at least this season) is the fact that is all viewed from the perspective of Araragi, so he (and us) get a better view of her body until she talks about her weight problem (the fact that she changes up multiple times because of the weight of the clothes), then he feels remorse, so the shots get less "ecchi" as he's trying to respect her situation. It's something I always liked about this show.

A thing to note is that in the novels there close to no action descriptions or environments, characters descriptions are also very brief. The author even said his characters where the dialogue, the whole franchise are speeches and monologues about various themes and the anime with its over the top and strange sense of art that takes over every dialogue is the best possible way to adapt this shows. Because if you watch the first arc you notice something interesting, nothing happened, it was a total of 6 or 7 dialogue scenes and the it was over, and its great, there is no action only the exploration of trauma of a teenage girl that sinks you in the characters mind and you don't even notice much of it. The writing of the work and it's adaptation are by far one of the greatest of all time

It still gets to me how all of the girls have character design traits that match their oddity. Senjogahara uses staplers like crab pincers, Mayoi's backpack like a snail's shell, Nadeko wearing her coat like a molting snakeskin, etc. It's a design choice that continues well in to the subsequent seasons and new characters as well.

Hachikuji said Omedetou gozaimasu, which as the subtitles said, means congratulations. Happy Birthday is "Tanjoubi Omedetou". You chose a major classic this time. Love all the songs in this series (Renai Circulation and Shiranai Monogatari are my faves). The visuals are very necessary to keep the viewers attention since this show uses a lot of dialogues. Props to whoever thought to direct the show this way. 26:30 Im not sure if you missed it, but when she said she was giving him a big favor while he recovered until he could move, in japanese she said "Dai Service" which means big service, or in something more relatable, a big "fan service". She stood above him in a dress while a train passed by and blew her skirt enough so that Araragi could see beneath (those rays of light formed by the passing train also looked like God Rays, depicting that whatever he was seeing at that moment was heavenly). Thats what she meant by giving him a favor ;)

33:13 I don't know if you noticed, but the janken (rock paper scissors) game Koyomi and Hitagi play in the ED of episodes 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14 are connected. 9: Hitagi wins twice and they tie twice. 10: Koyomi has removed his shirt and pants. Koyomi wins twice and they tie twice. 11: Hitagi has removed her tights, and presumably panties (her skirt appears to be undone). They tie three times and Koyomi wins once. 13: No apparent clothing change, but Hitagi's eyes are narrowed. Koyomi wins four times. 14: No apparent clothing change, but Koyomi is looking down at his (winning) hand while Hitagi leans forward staring at him. Hitagi always throws scissors.

Watching your reaction to my top5 anime is such a treat it makes me giddy. I know we probably wont see another part for a long time. But i am really glad you were able to enjoy it. it is really dialogue heavy and puts a lot of emphasis one basically words and use and change words. It does it well. And that puts off alot of people. Especially when you include Araragi’s actions towards hachikuji that comes off very offputting to many. And shaft was the best animation studio to do it as it removed every other person in the anime leaving only the main character to focus on. That also led to an amazing artistic anime. Like i cannot see any other studio doing anywhere close to what shaft did. Overall. It does everything i love in an animations like it does well in expressing dialogue in unusual means. The VA’s do an amazing job at bringing the characters alive. And it only get better in every sense from now on. Narratively. Animation wise and especially characters wise.

Being one of my absolute favourite series out there along with Mob, Jojo and Gintama this is a welcome addition to the watch through, tagalong and even rewatches over the course of time. This is a weird series even by weird standards with its complex characters, the ballistic action and the over the top exposition handled in no way other than perfect. For the casual viewer they get the gist of everything quick. But for anyone who wants to know what truly is afoot, using the flash cards and the info dumps are a goldmine as translation from novel to anime must have been a nightmare usually. Shaft did an amazing job with this series imo. Thank you bud for finally letting us witness the joy of someone seeing this.

I saw that... win 43... GG, sir... GG indeed. Also, during that scene after Senjougahara is freed of the Crab - the music playing is a piano version of the OP for that arc... you'll hear more of that sort of thing going on in the series... sometimes they're just leit motifs, and others are just piano covers of the OP proper. Senjougahara's birthday is July 7th, making her a Cancer - Cancer is represented by the crab, and its heavenly body is the Moon - which makes so much sense to me, and pairs well with her enjoyment of staring at the stars, and the Summer Triangle of Deneb, Altair, and Vega - which are all sung about in the ED as well. How much care and love they put into the music and lyrics shows how passionate the folks animating this were.

This is a great series overall. This first season only setting up all of the characters emotional issues but not actually resolving them. The rest of the story slowly tackles each of the characters problems not by dealing with the supernatural elements but specifically by having the characters grow up and learn to deal with the root emotional trauma that is the actual problem because all the supernatural stuff is really just a side effect of their real emotional issues. This series is absolutely brilliant and a total masterpiece of character writing. Plus Shaft has never adapted anything better than they adapted the Monogatari Series. The art, animation, music and voice acting is all 10/10. It's technically a harem ecchi, but it's not just another harem ecchi anime. It's honestly the only GOOD harem ecchi anime.
@MSDoL

I present to you "The World only God knows". Negima has a meh adpatation but the manga still counts as good harem ecchi. Mushoku Tensei can be considered one even if we are talking about only the aspect of relationships. Terrase goddess' cafe and 2.5D Kanojo will be airing this season and the source material has great potential. Kore wa zombie desu ka is borderline good as well as Baka to Testo. Futoku no Guild has promice, though they could have done a better job at the first season.

There is a ton of interesting symbolism in every OP in this series. The Hachikuji OP is my fav personally because of how damn impressive the symbolism is. The OP has her in a city where everyone is her, shes with herself in every scene, or putting it another way, "By Herself", which is the life she had chosen for herself these past 10 years so she wouldnt have to make anyone else lost like she is. Really damn poignant.

Finally. Our long waiting has paid off. Praise the Sun. Edit : Okay I've finished watching it. Really thank you for that. As it's a really peculiar kind of anime, of the "you love it or you hate it" breed it's always hard to recommend or talk about. But for me, the very specific atmosphere, animation direction, and of course the witty dialogues going back and forth, being sometimes nonsensical on the surface but actually deeper when you know the whole deal... And the music who always fits perfectly. Definitely my favourite of all time, by far. I never found any anime who could replicate this kind of feeling. Recently I loved Yofukashi no Uta who treats some similar thematics, but the vibe is still different (but awesome in its own way !) Sayounara Zetsubou-Sensei is probably the most similar of all, having the same director and main VA, I hugely recommend it as well. So now, tell me your price. How much for winning the entire series until the end ? xD

A few added points: 1) You wouldn't know it yet, but that blonde girl in the corner of episode 1 is probably the second most important character in the entire franchise (Shinobu / Kiss-Shot), after Koyomi himself. 2) Again, something they don't go into here, but Shinobu's name originally was Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. The kanji for 'Shinobu' uses the radical for 'heart' underneath the radical for 'blade.' So “Shinobu” = “Heart Under Blade.” 2) If you think Oshino Meme is a bad-ass now, wait until you see what he's capable of in Kizumonogatari. 3) Subtle, but you may notice that the scene where Koyomi is arguing with his sister, she's represented by the kanji for 'fire.' There are reasons for this (his sisters are referred to as “The Fire Sisters”). Wait till you meet his sisters in more depth in Nisemonogatari! 4) Nadeko is 'cute?' Just wait till you get to Nadeko Medusa and Hitagi End! 5) ALL of the OP's throughout the series are awesome, and reflective of their story arcs. Also, with only a few exceptions, the VA of the main female lead of the arc ALSO sings the OP's e.g. Yui Horie voices Hanekawa Tsubasa, and sings the OP's for her arcs: Tsubasa Cat “Sugar Sweet Nightmare,”Tsubasa Family “Perfect Slumbers,” Tsubasa Tiger “Chocolate Insomnia,” and so on for MOST of the others. (The exceptions are awesome, too, IMHO!) I HIGHLY recommend the Kizumonogatari trilogy next (followed by Nisemonogatari). Kizu is the prequel story of how Koyomi met Hanekawa, Oshino Meme, and the vampire Kiss-Shot (later named Shinobu). Warning, though, it's a VERY different style, and taken by itself can almost be seen as a tragic outcome. Maybe I'm just a sucker for that kind of thing (the tragic backstory), but two people in pain, constantly hurting each other, constantly comforting each other, is what drives pretty much the entire franchise all the way to the end of this phase. Great video!

I feel like one of my favorite things about this anime is how it went out of its way to give every character’s arc a unique opening that perfectly reflects them and in my opinion just makes you fall in love which each of them even more just by assigning them their own leitmotif in a way. Not many anime I know do this in such a way, but especially with a character focused series like this one it’s a small but genius choice of style I think.

26:11 This moment that you gave a max 2 wins for, personally, was one of my least favorite parts of watching Bake. For an anime-only, this moment works very well, but this and other action sequences left me wanting so much more because I first experienced this story through the light novels. Perhaps I don't feel any tension at all because I've already read it, but scenes like this cut out basically all of Araragi's internal thoughts for the sake of pacing. Because the books are able to slow the pacing as much as it wants, the tension that's built page after page feels so satisfying. Anime is an inherently different medium, and does not have the same luxuries. Where the books felt like a struggle to barely survive, the anime feels like a hit & run.

The fact that how Bakemonogatari handles these kind of tropes for example the romcom aspect of it as for an harem anime, Araragi chooses the character that is least likely to win refering to Senjougahara. With her unaproachable aura and her attitude at the first few episodes you would expect that Hanekawa will be the best candidate to win in this kind of situation based on the expectations on the tropes in romances anime or in general. There are many more things that could be said just bakemonogatari alone.

I love this anime, like truly adore it. But I also cannot reccoment it to any of my friends as I am terrified of how they will judge me for me for it lol. To say there are some aspects of this anime I am straight up ignoring - is not an understatement. Like I get it, it shows the main character's flaws. and some is played for jokes - But I am not reccomending this show to my friend for it's amazing storytelling, incredible soundtrack, legit super well written characters - only for them to think I like loli harems xD

When senjougahara talks about the balance of metals followed by 97Kg of bad intentions, the ratios are the same as for Cupronickel, which was used to jacket bullets. I think she said she has a 97Kg bullet of bad intentions (other translations say spite).

I remember this from years ago. I remember it was a little fast and I didn't understand a few things, but I do remember it being quite the visual and literal experience. I was wondering where Shinobu was for a lot, then that last part happened and I remembered, she was only really a background character til that moment, getting more screen time in the following show. Go thing I remembered, I was gonna get cross at ya boi, for forgetting our favorite dounut loving blonde loli vampire XD

i’m so happy people are starting to realize monogatari isn’t just loliconning and how incredible this series is. Also there is a 3 part movie trilogy which goes into the meeting of shinobu and araragi.

congratulations, you got through the prologue of the franchise! Also, each of the openings are representations of the struggles that each girl is going through through heavy metaphor usage. The most on-the-nose one is Hachikuji's Kaerimichi, in which she lives in a world without other people, constantly trying to amuse herself and struggling to do anything right. The song itself is about the mechanics of her being the Lost Snail and how it's normal for no day to end happy for her, along with how every day is the same for her year-round, but she never lost the hope that she will someday make it back to her home and that there must be some odd way to make it happen.

22:19 "Congratulations" is actually the exact translation of what she says there, おめでとうございます(omedetou gozaimasu). Happy birthday would be "お誕生日おめでとうございます" (otanjoubi ometedou gozaimasu) meaning "congratulations to your birthday", the subject "birthday" in japanese being in the front of the sentence. You probably confused it bc you can also just say "congrats" on somebodies birthday and it's obvious that it's congratulations for the birthday, which means most translators in that moment would write "Happy birthday" in the subtitles, cuz in english usually nobody says "Congrats to your birthday", thus creating your misunderstanding of the phrase. In monogatari there are many play on words and stuff like that that are very hard to understand if you don't know japanese, which is why (at least where i watched it) the subtitles are mostly very literal translations to avoid confusion or there is an explanation added, so you can trust what they say most of the time. On another note, really enjoyed this video, I always like re-experiencing a show I haven't watched in a while through your videos cuz its just faster and also adds your commentary on top of it. Looking forward to the next parts, keep up the good work and I wish you luck with the monetization issue

@@AnimeWins No, sadly I'm far from it, I'm just a weeb that watched wayyy too much anime and just started picking up on phrases and being able to understand simple sentences. Since I was at that point I just thought might as well learn to read hiragana and katakana and am currently trying to get into reading mangas on japanese to get better at it, but it's a slow progress especially with me being lazy. At least I know chinese so the kanji aren't troubling me that much, which is probably the worst part for someone who isn't used to it, hell, it's still hard for me too.

It is such a strange and great series. Many anime tried to copy some of the animation styles and failed horribly, scenes are never boring besides a LOT of dialog and it is one of the few series i paused every scene to read what was shown on those 1-2 sec colored inner dialog screens. And even now, about 10 years after I watched the first season I am still every now and then using "I flubbed" or "I stuttered" or adding way too many repeating syllables to any word starting with "ar" 🙂.
