I just realized that Metroman in the final act actually *knew* more about Megamind than he did anyone else. Like you said, he sees people as props, but not Megamind. He knows that like himself, Megamind didn’t have a choice in what he was, he was given the role of villain by everyone else, and in the end, Megamind might’ve actually been one of the two only people Metroman ever would’ve had as a true friend. I actually love this way more now

1: it started out as actual hostile rivalry and only slowly grew into friendship. He said it himself, he never had a choice. And Megamind was the only Villain who actually required him to take action, while all other villains were easily handled by the normal police. 2: Metroman was in pretty much the same situation. Megamind was the only person who didn't see him as a supreme being, the only person who could even attempt (or even actually was interested in attempting) to be his equal. He was like a god stomping through a city made of paper mash. With Megamind, he was able to actually relax a bit. Metroman never talked Megamind out of being a villain because it wasn't that kind of friendship. It was a rivalry, they were codependent in each other fulfilling their role. And Metroman even more so than Megamind. Megamind was able to just kick back and not do anything evil if he so chose, Metroman did not have that freedom. He needed Megamind to be his villain.

I also really like how Roxanne is never really afraid of Megamind. When Megamind kidnaps her and tries to scare her, their exchange is playful, even flirty. But when Hal kidnaps her, she is genuinely terrified of him. It's because Roxanne knew that everything that Megamind did was nothing but performative. She knew that he would never hurt her- She was never in any real danger, it was understood that all he really wanted to do was lure Metroman out and fight him. Hal's behaviour showed little regard for her safety or her desires- stalking her to her home, spying on her through the window, clumsily throwing her around and then claiming to have "saved" her.
@sugilite29634 жыл бұрын
I personally think the reason she wasn't afraid of Mega-Mind is because she believed that Metro-Man will come and save her before Mega-Mind gets the chance to hurt her, and that the kidnapping was by now just part of the hero/villain routine. Not only that but when Mega-Mind does take over the city, she does seem to be genuinely concerned about what he's about to do... But that's just my personal opinion
@slimeplort4 жыл бұрын
@@sugilite2963 I believe it's more because Metroman was Megamind's obsession. Him disappearing created a void in him that she didn't know what it would be filled with. So when Mega-Mind takes over the city he's become far more unpredictable, hence her concern. Of course he ends up filling that void with Roxanne which she definitely wasn't going to predict.
@therandomshow12654 жыл бұрын
I know right thats what the movie was trying to say eh?
@crowskinned4 жыл бұрын
@@slimeplort I'm not entirely sure if what Roxanne experienced after Megamind won was actually fear, honestly. Because rather than being afraid, she seemed to be grieving and angry, and she chides Megamind rather than expressing that she was afraid. If she was afraid, her tone when she said "'Are you ready to be a slave army', What You Need To Know" would've carried more severity than the exasperation she expressed. I don't think anyone was ever expecting Megamind to succeed - least of all himself. And I think the people of Metro City knew that. Megamind was right when she said that the primary difference between him and Tighten was "Presentation", because Presentation was Megamind's primary superpower. His last fight with Metroman was fraught with performative action, luring Metroman to a fake observatory, engaging in banter to distract him while his latest -inator was setting up (well, he tried), giving Roxanne empty threats to project the illusion of danger so that Metroman would show up. He'd never actually hurt Metroman, right until he decided to fake his death. Even directly after Metroman was presumed dead, the way that Roxanne asked Megamind "What are you going to do with all of us" wasn't fearful, but annoyed. I don't think Roxanne was ever afraid of Megamind, she was rightfully angry, because she never thought he would go that far. Because as Megamind said himself, murder wasn't part of the play, or more specifically, "That's not how you play the game".

Megamind was one of the few movies in which a sequel would never live up to the quality and hype of the first movie. DreamWorks has proven me right. (also a better plot would be Megamind gets arrested by his world's version of the Justice League cuz while he is now good, the heroes refuse to believe this since he 1] "Killed" Metroman, 2] took over the city, and 3] created another villain to make himself look good {that's what the heroes think at least}. And so he has to prove himself yadda yadda yadda and the heroes now trust him and he is accepted for who he now is but that is basically the same plot as the first movie.) I am currently writing a rewriting of the plot of alternate dimension version of Megamind 2, nicknamed Megamind 2: Atonement (Name is WIP).

I think it's also nice to mention with Hal, how actually scary he is. When he melts the plastic megamind face, or just straight up goes for him, after their confrontation, you actually feel kind of scared for the characters. This is exactly what makes him such a good villain. We all know of (if not already met) those kinds of "nice guys", and that's why the character is so convincing. Hal was unhinged from the start but that ultimate power that was given to him was the scary part, because the moment things didn't go according to his plan, his intentions came to light and it was clear he didn't care about anything else but himself. Also, another thing that shows Megamind true nature is him ruling the city. Most villains will continue to expand their power base and influence, enforcing strict laws to further ones own safety and power. Megamind, just gets bored. something to notice i feel you didn’t comment on! i really, really enjoy how the very first scene between megamind and roxanne IMMEDIATELY established that they have a lot of chemistry and, most importantly, roxanne isn’t scared of him! at no point during the movie does roxanne ever feel truly threatened and in danger when she’s near megamind, which sharply contrasts with her near hal. it’s also a SUPER great way to basically tell the viewer that megamind is not bad and is not actively harming people, despite all the ‘bad’ things he’s done to roxanne. it’s not personal towards her, she is never scared or truly endangered, and allows their relationship to blossom without being hindered by megamind’s ‘evil’ actions.

True! She never feels threatened by him to the point where she sasses the hell out of him when he kidnaps her all the time. She just doesn't particularly care as such. She kind of sees him as a bit of an idiot, and from memory never thinks of him as inherently evil. Just a well-meaning, blithering idiot.

It's also clever to build a romantic subplot by accident. Because it actually feels natural that these two suddenly realize they complete each other, no side forced a relationship and that's how real-life relationships work or should work.

I've always loved that first scene with those two more than anything because of the chemistry they show. One reacted in anger as he felt he was entitled to her because now that he had powers he should have everything she wanted. One reacts with sadness and acceptance because in his mind hes never been worthy of acceptance so to him its no surprise but he could have easily acted with anger but doesn't.

That's the main problem I have with superheroes. Too much rely on them. If they fail, if they stop, if they start to act badly, "ordinary citizens" are helpless. The same applies to politicians. The chief of a government has too much power and responsibilities in tons of countries. If they fail, or if they start to act badly or for their own interests, which they can and certainly do, people can't do anything. When they fail, you'll always find people to say "Look at how many things s·he has to think, it's normal if s·he fails sometimes." Yes. Maybe that's the problem. This one person has too many things to think about to do it properly. In the case of superheroes, it's even worse because they often chose to do that without asking anyone and without following any law or rule that states what they sould or should not do.

@@sasori2425 its also *sort of* Vandal Savage's rhetoric in Young Justice, albeit with a much darker course of action following the same fundamental idea. Savage looks at Earth, a place he has lived since the dawn of mankind (remember he's literally Cain from Cain and Abel), and he sees is full of Super Heroes that stiffle the growth of the general population. Ordinary civilians, hell even law enforcement, frequently rely on heroes to coddle them (I believe "coddle" is even a word he uses in the show) and keep them from growing strong. Which is why he wants to take control of the Justice League and accelerate Earth to the forefront of the galaxy. Lex, like you said, fears Superman turning evil. But he also takes issue with Superman in his current form: unchecked and uncheckable to do whatever he wants. Even if he always uses that unlimited power to do good, he shouldn't have it in the first place, and he shouldn't be the sole arbiter of his own actions. Lex is evil, he's a war profiteering megalomaniac who has doubtless caused--however indirectly--the deaths of millions. But he plays by rules, he has to move his bishops diagonally, he has to solve problems and navigate complicated sitations in order to succeed in his goals. Superman faces 0 opposition that he can't punch through, and that's the problem.

The fact that Megamind’s cape had spikes in the shoulders until the scene in which he is accepted by Roxanne and the town and then it changes to a fluffy material after he received all that love and recognition is truly genius. The design team really did use his outfit as a way of showing his inner feelings, as the spikes draw people away from showing him affection, such as giving him a hug, and in a sense although he was getting closer to Roxanne he was drawing her away from the real him, since he was disguised as someone else, and only when she truly accepted him for who he really was he was able to accept being accepted. But the fact that she hugs him right after he defeats Hal and is still wearing the first cape really freaks me out but idk maybe she was so happy she didn’t really put much thought into that

The colors that Roxanne wears also changes throughout the movie. She starts the movie with a red dress like in the scene at 17:43. During her time with Megamind when he is disguised, she wears purple, a mix of red and blue 19:42. At the end, after she accepts Megamind, she wears blue 26:13. It is another small detail but it is definitely interesting and fits with what you pointed out.

A little detail that really stands out to me is the way the movie uses random babies in the crowd. At the beginning of the movie, they giggle with glee during Metroman’s presentation, even as he was recklessly tossing them through the air. Meanwhile as soon as Megamind appears, they begin to cry. It even happens again in the restaurant, as if they’re trained reflexively react with fear at the mere sight of him. It’s an exaggerated and simplified view of what the city populace think of each individual. But then toward the end( 22:45 ), when Roxanne reveals Megamind to the crowd after he scared Titan off, a baby in the crowd starts to cry, but then quickly stops, looking surprised. Even the baby is questioning its fear reflex after what just happened, because the city is in disbelief that this “villain” could’ve been responsible for saving them. It’s a simple thing, but I think it’s a lovely bit of symbolism the movie employs!

I plead for mercy from Peacock that the show they're teasing is at least a kind of Clone Wars situation where the movie was ass but the show gets better & better, but I doubt it. I was in 8th grade when I first saw this movie. The teacher rewarded us with a movie day and played this for our class. I'd recently made friends with a girl who was new to the school, like me, and my GOD we thought this was the funniest thing we'd ever seen. We both laughed way harder than anyone else in the room, and from that day forward, Megamind quotes became a part of our regular vocabulary. All these years later, and even as adults when we get to see each other once a year, we rewatch Megamind. My husband thinks it's the weirdest thing to bond over, but it's the movie that brought us closer and helped cement our friendship. I'll always be grateful to this movie for that. And I will never get tired of referring to that jr. high where we met as "our old shool house."
