just like to point out something to keep an eye on. nami tends to use nicknames for people they meet after luffy uses them. like weird knight. nami can remember his name shes plenty smart but she seems to use the nicknames luffy comes up with when he cant remember them. its an odd but cute thing ive noticed with nami that other crew members pick up later too. but i noticed nami doing it first and i definitely notice it more during and after this saga. unless nami builds her own relationship with a character she just defaults to what luffy calls them

Win 5777 I refuse to accept anyother translation than the first one I saw way back in 2008 give or take on my first watch through of One Piece. Gum gum no Zombie. I just found it way funnier because of the song by Cranberies of that title. Not the creature. Because Luffy is being idi-ot-ic idoitic Zombie beh beh. Plus later on it was Octopus not sure if that is different but yeah... Luffy maybe you should play test these ideas sometimes. Personal fave atk of Luffys is a future one called Gum gum Robot. It always makes me laugh.

it is always interesting how we the viewers/readers know Luffy is a rubber human but it takes Enel attacking Luffy to realize for most that Luffy was immune to lightning :P

the first time i saw it i remembered luffy is rubber, but up to that point i kept questioning my own understanding of rubber, i was 16 and my science knowledge wasnt great, so i kept doubting myself. and of course as i grew up learning rubber melts. but this isnt rubber. luffy isnt made of rubber, he has the qualities of rubber on a human body. though a lot of people forget that. if u touch luffy his skin still feels like normal skin it just stretches like rubber. otherwise it be weird if no one ever mentioned, after touching luffy, how weird he feels to touch (like those stretch armstrong toys). and oda wouldnt neglect to mention that. like ace hes literally a fire person but that doesnt mean touching him burns u. otherwise we start getting the everything turns to gold touch monkeys paw thing.

Even to this day, I still say Gum-Gum Airhead is the most inspired idea Luffy’s ever had mid-fight lol. He really just sat there for a sec and went “This guy can read my thoughts? Well screw him, who needs thinking!!” and it worked 😂

You see at this stage Robin calls everyone differently, usually by their role on the ship; Captain, Swordsman, Navigator, she's warming to them but she's not entirely there yet. Fun Fact: in the manga the child throws a stone at Conis, not a tomato There's also been a great build to the fact that, because he was eaten by the snake and thus his 'voice' had been obscured by the snake's 'voice' from Enel's Mantra, Luffy has been in Enel's blind spot this entire time, it's very much 'Luffy happens to the plot' in the way that no enemy does - or even can - plan for Luffy. But sometimes the most effective twists are the ones that seem obvious in hindsight; rubber doesn't conduct electricity, Luffy is immune to Enel's lightning. And since rubber comes from particular trees that grow on the surface, there was no way for a sky person like Enel to know such a material existed. But even then, much like with Crocodile, exposing a weakness doesn't simply finish the fight, it's still an uphill battle by the villain's own adaptability and their own intelligence Apparently Mellorine is a substitute for ice cream, I guess since it's very sweet Sanji associates it with women.

The light slap thing is from a very popular slapstick stand-up comedy style in Japan called Manzai. It's a duo act where one person is the straight man (Tsukkomi), and the other (Boke) does something stupid or says something outrageous, and the tsukkomi responds with a smack and a retort. A large, large amount of Oda's comedy comes from that. If you've seen in other anime someone smacking someone else with a paper fan, that's also from Manzai acts.

That "chest slap" you're wondering about is actually a staple of classic Japanese two men comedy called _Manzai_ in which a "Straight-man" (here in most cases Usopp) and a "Funny-man" tell jokes of which the punch line usually consist of the slap reaction of the Straight-man.

Random One Piece factoid, Oda got asked what Enel's bounty would be if he were on the blue sea the whole time. He said Enel would have around $500,000,000 if memory serves. Otherwise I'm loving your coverage of this arc specifically, its never been one of my favourites, but you've really made me appreciate it a lot more than I did so thanks!

@@AnimeWins Fair enough, you're not wrong at all. A lot of the pacing issues with the anime have to do with them slowing things down so they don't catch up to the manga. I don't know if you've heard, but one piece is getting another anime adaptation by Wit studio. Obviously, they'll be able to take their time, and it'll probably be seasonal instead of week to week. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it is going to turn out. Back to Skypia, when I was introducing my sister to one piece she really liked Skpia, and we managed to watch the entire thing, going through from the afternoon to well into the a.m. I would not recommend that, but it was still a really fun experience.

Eneru being a giant douche canoe and finally learning all the many ways he has cemented himself as a proper Bad Guy is great. Him being lightning and the Luffy being immune was one of the best story beats in the arc. That face has become iconic, and a whole host of characters have their own version of it from now on. I cannot wait for the history and the reveal of everything next Saturday or the week after!

Faith. That is the key difference. She is by herself, but she isnt alone. She trusts luffy is coming, and recognizes that, with her lack of combat skill, the best she can do is "infiltrate" and gather information. Enel keeps her around because he recognizes her brain and tries to crush her spirit to make her fall in line, but the fact her spirit hasnt been broken despite everything he's already done to the crew is proof of her faith in her companions. In arlong, she leaves to protect the crew. Against enel, she leaves to protect herself. It sounds backwards, but it really shows a growing respect for themselves. She cant help anyone if she is dead, and as an arlong pirate, she hated herself more than anyone else. With eneru, she trusts her companions enough to protect herself in the short term, valuing her worth as a person and as part of the crew.

43:58 So from what I have seen from some games and japanese material. I may not be 100% correct here. But the slap thing is a sort of comedy called Manzai. I will take a part of the Wikipedia here. Manzai usually involves two performers (manzaishi)-a straight man (tsukkomi) and a funny man (boke)-trading jokes at great speed. Most of the jokes revolve around mutual misunderstandings, double-talk, puns and other verbal gags.
