Fun fact: Every first of April the writer of the novel releases a side story of what if "Subaru choose the opposite of what he did in the LN" and that shit is insanely dark most of the time. Instead of calling for help and Reinheart comes he decides to die 80 times because of his "Pride" instead of "Humility" and it broke him or when Ram cornered him on the cliff and he ran away and took the "Wrath" path instead of "Patience" and it really destroyed him to the point of him becoming feared almost like Satela because of what he's done.

If we're talking about Ram's connections specifically to the Red Oni and Blue Oni story, I think it deals pretty heavily with her sense of guilt for making Rem have such a low sense of self-worth as well as her frustration with Rem essentially chaining herself down to "atone" for feeling joy that Ram's horn was broken. Let's view the Red Oni as Ram, the Blue Oni as Rem, and the villagers as the rest of the Oni tribe. Ram is the Red Oni. During her analysis of the story, she says she personally believes that the Red Oni is beyond help, as the Red Oni caused the Blue Oni to be wrapped up in its desires, and by the end of the story, had lost nothing despite the Blue Oni losing everything. Ram's aptitude for magic, and generally simply being rather skilled in almost everything gave her the adoration and respect of all the Oni Tribe members, much like how the Red Oni wanted to be friends with the villagers. However, her prodigious skills also caused Rem to develop an inferiority complex as she was constantly in her sister's shadow. Additionally, her sister's success in most areas also raised expectations for Rem, who still ended up disappointing most of the Oni Tribe, further deepening her inferiority complex. Ram's dislike of the Red Oni in the story is a reflection of her own self-loathing and guilt that she feels for causing Rem so much pain through her own success. Her belief that the Red Oni should have simply broken off their own horns if they wanted to be friends with the villagers before the Blue Oni couldn't bear to watch their friend anymore probably speaks to her own belief that she probably should have pretended or disguised her natural aptitude and prodigious skill so that Rem didn't have to feel overshadowed by her sister in all aspects of her life until she had no self-esteem that wasn't tied to her sister. She probably was enamored by the admiration and respect the Tribe gave her whenever she succeeded and didn't see how Rem was suffering until it was too late and she could no longer pretend that she was deficient in some areas. The Red Oni, who can only wish and be taken care of others, is probably Ram's guilt over her perceived selfishness. She could not help her sister, only take from her. It also subtly foreshadows the fact that Ram literally has to be taken care of others, as she is unable to gather mana from her horn, she needs regular mana infusions from Roswaal or she will die. Rem is the Blue Oni. Subaru describes the Blue Oni's self-sacrifice as admirable, but ultimately it never gained anything in the end as all of its sacrifices were for the sake of another. This very much describes Rem's personality, and not just when applied to her relationship with her sister, as many people who watch this show know. Rem gives up her self-esteem and develops an inferiority complex so deep that she often felt as if her parents did not care for her when comparing herself to her sister. Yet, despite all this, she accepted her place behind her sister and never felt or showed resentment except in the darkest corners of her heart. Ram describes the Blue Oni as "basking in his own self-sacrifice". I believe this refers to how Rem's inferiority complex has gotten worse after feeling joy when she saw her sister's horn being cut off. Due to the guilt and her own inferiority complex, she is now trying to become an ideal servant so she can replace her sister in order to atone for what she feels she robbed from Ram, as Ram's injury occurred protecting Rem, while still idolizing her. I take Ram's comment about the Blue Oni as her frustration seeing her sister willingly allow herself to be placed forever in her shadow. Even after her horn was cut off, Rem still idolizes her sister and her inferiority complex is still as strong as ever. Rem is allowing herself to be chained down by her guilt towards her sister as some form of atonement, which Ram thinks is stupid because nothing that happened that night was Rem's fault. She decided to protect her sister of her own free will and would probably make that choice again in a heartbeat.

many dislike Subaru but he's one of the most human MCs out there. Not your typical perfect MC with unending Harem. But just a human being that makes mistakes and tries to learn from them little by little. Personally, I like Subaru (except of course for that episode where he humiliates himself and others) but moving on from that point, he learns a lot.

Yeah people seem to have this problem with some main characters. I've seen the same criticism for Shinichi from Parasyte: The Maxim and also Shinji from Evangelion. People not liking them and calling them crybabies. Not everyone can be unrealistically emotionless, unfazed and cool at any moment like Meliodas from Seven deadly sins or Natsu from Fairy Tail. These people sometimes tend to have a little god complex themselves saying they personally wouldn't cry or break down if they were in Subaru's situation

35:57 Re:Zero gets a lot of props for how in depth it's worldbuilding is and smattering in bits and pieces here and there, but I'd also like to point you to Ascendance of a Bookworm which has a more gradual but equally in depth worldbuilding that grows as the MC's experience with the world also grows. It's not as dark though, but it does touch on some dark themes without really showing them in too much detail.

Yup. Subaru is one of the few actually good isekai protagonists. Despite his respawn mechanic, he doesn't have a plot armor. He has his own mental issues that don't magically disappear when he get isekaied. A flashback later on shows that he was basically mentally broken all the way until Rem encouraged him.

Re zero doesnt even feel like an isekai. It is one of the few anime that I find genuinely funny, can make me laugh, and keep me on the edge of my seat with amazing plot twists. Definitely my favorite anime of all time with steins gate and dr. Stone fighting for 2nd place.

If you like the worldbuilding in Re:Zero, Ascendence of a Bookworm might also be up your alley. They have some excellent worldbuilding for a beautiful and fascinating world too. And it's shown and explained not in a huge infodump, but in nice small bits in a nice mix of telling and showing. Really worth a watch, whether you do it for the channel(s) or just for entertainment.

One thing most people miss You know the scene with Subaru telling Ram the study of the 2 Ogres? If you look carefully in certain shots you can see Rem looking through the window watching their conversation Which adds to her rage in the forest she mentions hating seeing ram talk to Subaru Another subtle detail I love is Rams odd cooking So Rem is the resident cook of the mansion right? But Ram has 1 specialty Steamed Potatoes Now look back on the episode of Rem’s backstory , the day she tried to cook for her family but only for her ingredients to be destroyed and her to be saved by Ram Only one ingredient was left do she could only use that, but what was the ingredient ,Potatoes , she made Steamed Potatoes, and Ram specifically pointed out to their parents how good REM’s potatoes were Now if you extrapolate you find an interesting quirk Rem likely refused to cook steamed potatoes again as they reminded her of that day and her inferiority complex So Ram replicated Rem’s potatoes instead , leading to her cooking specialty

I've heard how some compared anime like The Promised Neverland to Lovecraftian Horror and I'm surprised no one seems to have done the same with Re: Zero. Subaru's reset ability is dark, mysterious, and takes a mental/emotional toll on him each time since it's only triggered by his death. Add the fact how it erases his actions and interactions with others and prevents him from telling anyone about it and it's really just easy to see how the guy cracks from time to time.

I always liked that the flashback empathized what Subaru's story meant to them both. Me I don't really have a fav ship in this series. I simply want Subaru to have a well deserved happy ending at series end. I have heard of future events and cannot wait for S2 to cover a certain event, and reveal a certain foe. I find the way they handle Reinhard very interesting, he's overpowerred AF and can take anyone in a fight, but that doesn't mean he can solve every problem, he legitimately would have been too slow to save Emilia from Elza, and he had no way to heal anyone on his own. And in season two, we see him fight and presumably defeat Pucks world ending form, but not before Puck's already been on a rampage. Even though he could defeat most of the villains in the show, he wouldn't be able to save most of the problems and things would have turned out worse if he was the main character, like in the second half of the season, he would have been too late to stop the Witch's cult and wouldn't have had another chance like Sunaru, he also couldn't have destroyed Bettleguese since he's not a spirit weilder. It's an interesting way to make an OP character not feel like the answer to every problem since the conflict is rarely "can we defeat the bad guy?" And more often "can we save everyone?"

that episode had me physically cringing because I thought subaru was gonna do something dumb and have it be really fucking awkward, so I skipped the second half of the episode and continued, thankfully I know what happened thanks to his flashbacks but I was not ready to curse myself by watching that.

Can relate to every aspect you talk about, be it the OST, the scenic views or the characters. Love your overly excited Japanese additions as well, like 27:13 lol I've watched and rewatched Re:Zero 3 times in the past month and STYX HELIX is the best ED to exist, especially because it complements the anime so well AND it plays at the moments it's best suited for (like every song featured in Re:Zero). _I wish I could relive that moment at 3 AM when I first heard STYX HELIX play into the anime..._

fun fact: in the light novels (original source), Puck is not the one who teaches Subaru about magic. It's actually Roswaal who teaches Subaru about magic in the bath scene. Which I don't know why they made it Puck since Roswaal would be a better choice since Roswaal is literally known as the strong magic user in the world and that builds character between the two characters but I guess in the anime, it introduced that berry that gives Subaru mana which aided him in the end of arc 2.

Watching the director's cut made me appreciate Emilia a lot more - I don't think the original spent as much time on Subaru's flashback's on why he cares for her. The hour long episodes felt a lot more cohesive and better paced overall. I only watched it the once back when it first came out and then again recently with the director's cut in anticipation for season 2, but this cut just feels so much better. I appreciate your breakdown because I couldn't catch all the changes, but things like noting they added Subaru's anger earlier makes it feel a lot better, I remember back in the day people started hating the second half because of adding in Subaru's more dislikeable elements that they had avoided early on in the series - it made sense the first time round to draw people in, but it was whiplash, it's so nice to have those little elements drawing more attention.

I could be wrong, but at his first death and your mention of if the light onto the hands is significant or not I personally have 2 thoughts on it. The first is a nod to her similarities to Satella and so it could be symbolic that hes holding her hand right before his first return by death event, and in addition I believe the blue-ish light and the shaking camera is a reference to Puck's true form and his promise revealed in the future. So the scene heavily nods to what happens when either of them dies.

I tried to get two of my friends into Re:Zeró and they both dropped it at episode 3-5, that really sucks because Re:Zero is in my top 5 animes and I can’t even get my friends hooked on it

I was introduced to Re;Zero through the if novels... very interesting way to start. Don't start that way, luckily I forgot it because while good I always forget things till re-reading so I enjoyed the anime.

When you first see Subaru's contacts you see that he only really has 4, half of them being his partners, one being for fast food, and the last one is probably an emergency line (idk what city hall would imply, I'm just assuming that it was automatically put on his phone and not something that he added himself) Another subtle nod to his otaku isolation. He literally has no friends, all he has are his light novels and video games.

36:04 in this part, since you were already talking about lore, you could've mentioned the crystal above the door glowing red, which are used to tell the time in Re:Zero, I believe it goes Earth-Time (yellow, 6AM to 12PM), Fire-Time (red, 12PM to 18PM), Water-Time (blue, 18PM to 12AM) and Wind-Time (green, 12AM to 6AM) Not a hugely useful piece of information, but it is mentioned in one of the first Break Time! episodes and it would've added to your point, and it does show up in the scene so it's easily segwayed. Then again, you might've just not known about this, in which case, now you know. I sounded super cocky, sorry about that.

That comment you made about the world just has Subaru in it instead of it being a world for Subaru is more or less one of the biggest reasons for Subaru's greatest character flaws. He, at first, believed that the world would bend to his desires, he's the protagonist after all. He doesn't really consider the consequences of his actions since they should benefit him in the end. They don't, this is a fully realized world full of events already in motion, characters with excisting relationships and the world doesn't care that Subaru arrived.
