I don’t think people give Rick enough love when they talk about this movie. He’s not portrayed as some insufferable dad who tries forcing his family to be something they’re not like a lot of the media writes dads off as. He lets Katie and Aaron have their own interests and allows them to dress in their own style (look how much *character* Katie has just from her look, and her dad never comments negatively on it or tries to drag her down due to her personality) he just genuinely wants the best for them - and especially his daughter. It’s not that he didn’t believe in Katie, it’s that he didn’t think her dreams were going to make her successful or happy since he just didn’t understand technology. He doesn’t even get angry at her in the movie for using it, and even grows to enjoy its use when he realises that it can be used as another way to connect with his family. Also, extra points to this movie for adding the fact that the main conflict that gets them captured by the robots isn’t some stereotypical argument the protagonists have before the climax, it’s the fact that Rick gets hurt and feels betrayed by his daughter’s words being played back to him, which - it’s so often that kids forget their parents are people, and I think it’s brilliant that the movie showcased the effects Katie’s indirect resentment had on her father and that she felt regret for what she said. This movie is what shows such as Ginny and Georgia *wanted* to be. Hands down one of my favourites.
@jhfholliexxh28823 жыл бұрын
Hard agree. I’ve seen wayyyy too many people hating on either Rick or Katie without realising they BOTH had a lot to learn from each other. They were surprisingly very likeable despite being opposites! The people who complain about only one of them missed the entire point of the movie. Technology isn’t inherently bad, but the way you use it can be classified as negative. Katie feeling general disconnect from her dad made her pull away from him and depend more on technology to express herself, which in turn frustrated him, since he wanted to spend time with his daughter before she went to college. Yeah, it was an ass move to cancel Katie’s plane ticket, but it truly was one of Rick’s last ditch efforts to make things up to Katie after unintentionally breaking her laptop. He wanted to connect with her and give her a memorable goodbye before she moved onto the next step of her life.

Yeah to elaborate a bit on Rick: it's shown pretty clearly from the start that he doesn't understand Katie, and even at the end he's hopeless and doesn't get technology. But he's never mean, he never intentionally belittles her or her hobbies. At the start when he broke her laptop, it wasn't done in malice or revenge. It was an honest to god mistake.

I love the details on Katie's character design: - The "The Shining" pattern on her socks - The hole on her pants that has eyes drawn on top of it - The doodles drawn on her hands (fingernails included) - Her single lightning bolt earring - Her stretched out T-shirt collar due to her pulling it when she's nervous - The pride pin (and the entire way this movie handles Katie's homosexuality) - The patch on her hoodie's left sleeve (meaning she really loves that hoodie and she chose to fix it rather than throwing it away) IMO Katie has one of the best character designs in an animated movie ever. Also, I noticed that at one point in the movie, she gets a wound in her knee (after the giant furby showdown). That really surprised me, as they did make the characters more believable in that way. My win i'd love to add for this movie: I just can't stop staring at how they animated Pal's face! It's extremely difficult to get that level of emotion with such simple shapes on a 2d object, yet with the smooth movements and creative use of positioning on the screen, they manage to get a very unique and interesting effect that encapsulates Pal's character very well!

Or, putting all the emotional responsibility on the parent and making the son/daughter entirely in the right. @Silentgrace112 жыл бұрын
I think it especially does an amazing job of showing a sibling relationship with the context of a big age gap. My little sibs are 11 to 18 years younger than me, and there have never been rivalries or even a whole bunch of conflict, for the most part (aside from literal screaming children making me go into sensory overload, but alas, I even encounter that in the grocery store, with it without siblings present). There’s enough of an age gap where you’re mostly just comfortable in each other’s existences, and (from the perspective of the oldest) you’re there to give advice and support them, especially in areas that you felt were desperately needed when you were growing up. Like, I’m always giving them advice to promote them dancing to their own beat and expressing their emotions in a healthy manner because I was taught otherwise growing up, and it frankly sucked. Likewise, even at 26 I’ll still learn some life lessons from my 8 year old brother from time to time.

At 7:44 you hear the robots talk about being “defective” and saying naaah we aren’t. I really think that that is the big message from this movie. When they confront the Mitchels and act that they aren’t robots they in fact are “defective” because they act like someone they shouldn’t be. When the mitchels accept them for who they are they aren’t “defective” anymore. They are just them and that’s exactly who they are supposed to be. They accepted themselves and the Mitchels accepted them and if that isn’t the message of this movie idk what is. (To avoid some comments about it. Katie had to accept her dad for who he was and her dad had to accept Katie for who she was.)

Totally agree. It was the same reason I loved Cyborg's Motherbox Scene in the Snyder Cut, when (SPOILERS) the mother boxes refer to him as a 'broken boy', and he replies "I'm not broken". It's the realization that just because you're different, it doesn't mean theres' absolutely anything wrong with you, it simply makes you who you are. I loved that theme in this movie, and understanding that everyone's differences are not something to laugh at or mock, as evidence by how the "perfect neighbors" are captured, whereas the "disfunctional family" gets to save the day.

Don't let this comment distract you from the fact that democracy has proven itself to be a complete and utter failure. Throughout history, democracy has ruined thousands of lives due to it's corruptible nature. Democracy may pretend to be a fair and equal system of government but that is all a lie. Look at some of the democratic nations of the world. Look at the USA, a tyrannical and unstable nation with a population that has been divided due to stupid political parties. What about Libya? Libya tried to be a fair and equal nation under democracy, and dissolved into a chaotic mess. As a matter of fact, the original democratic system in Athens was completely based on privilege. When democracy was first created, you could only vote if you were a rich man. Ever since it's inception, democracy has always been corrupt. The system of democracy is an evil thing and all members of a Senate/Parliament/Congress should be executed for irreversibly fucking up the planet.

It just felt good that Katie saw the potential in all of them and brought them into her world even more

ahhh I think you just made me MORE obsessed with this film, which I didn't think was possible!! THANK YOU!! And for the record, yes, I 100% think Katie watches the CinemaWins of her universe and wanted to get as many points as possible while making this. 100%, no question.

2:33 Mark: has pal for 3 years. also Mark before the show: barley figures out that pal can access private emails and has enough power to destroy the human race

I think it's a nice attention to detail that *he* didn't even realize the full potentials of Pal, and used her like we use other digital assistants. I like to think it's a subtle foreshadowing of the near future where he didn't care about her whatsoever

something I love: in the mall, Katie struggles putting her hand in her Hoodie pocket because she isn't looking down at it. so she misses it at first, makes her feel more human.

I _love_ the soundtrack for this film. All the Los Campesinos, The Mae Shi, and the song I Want More just fits in so well - especially since it’s a movie from (mostly) Katie’s perspective. These songs and bands just fit her SOO unbelievably well, and it’s such a cool touch.

I would love a channel called “CinemaWars” where cinema sins and cinema wins battle it out watching a movie together. The most wins/sins on a movie wins. So if cinema sins has more sins he wins and vise versa.

If this does happen they might make the channel, and it would be hilarious to see the arguments unfold.

As a Person who is 18, going to college, and is also pursuing something that my parents have NO Knowledge of yet believe in my own decisions and are proud of what I’m doing, Katie as a character and a Modern Day Teenager is such a believable Teenage Character and such a fresh take on Teenagers in film.
