I guess I'm the odd man out. I totally loved Unbreakable. It absolutely resonated with me because it was so real. This is how it would be for people who discovered they had a superpower. It wouldn't make them overjoyed, they wouldn't be flying around the clouds or swinging away on webs whooping it up. It would absolutely shatter their world and change everything for them, and not always in a good way. That's why Unbreakable is one of those movies that are in my "If I had to pick X movies to take with me to a desert island" list.

I was hoping you'd tackle this one. I love all the contrasts between David and Elijah. The color schemes with their clothing, the fact that their names start with a vowel or a consonant respectively, their family lives, etc. There are just so many it's hard to list them. I also love that Elijah wears purple because it's not only Samuel L Jackson's favorite color, but a reference to Adrian Veidt from Watchmen.

turns 20 today! Another success by M. Night Shyamalan. The reception was lukewarm and it didn't pass the $100 million mark at the box office. But now it's recognized as one of the more early superhero flicks. We didn't know at the time Shayamalan was creating his own universe. More of a moody comic book like drama with a slow burn. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are stupendous. I like Robin Wright Penn a lot. It's good because Shyamalan helped developed the shaping of modern comic book films to come. This one though focuses more on the characteristics of the heroes without resorting to flashy tropes like capes, costumes, mustache twirling villains or big end of the world scenarios. Feels more grounded in its own reality. A heck of a twist ending that ties everything together.

I can't believe it took me this long to watch Unbreakable, as my dad and sister were big fans of it when it came out. Interesting, I saw the ending as a completely triumphant moment for Mr. Glass, not something he felt remorseful about. I guess that's just the beauty of different interpretations, though!

This is easily my favourite Bruce Willis performance. I love Die Hard. Die Hard is great. And Bruce was made to play imperfect, human heroes. He's like a more human Sylvester Stallone in his movies. I can't help but feel sorry for both of them. They know how to play sad men. But, even if nobody knows how to shake me fundamentally through his words like Sly ("Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! ...", "It ain't about how hard you can hit. It's about how much you can get hit, and keep moving forward! How much you can take and keep moving forward! ...", ...), Bruce doesn't need big speeches. In a way he'll always remind me of my father. And that's how i want to be to my child one day, when my wife and me get lucky (hopefully soon). The best thing about this movie is how real his struggles feel. The moment where he tells his wife about his nightmare is so beautifully tied up in the carrying Audrey scene. I hope I'll never end up with my wife in a similar spot like them. But if we do, I hope we can save it in a similarly satisfying way. God, this movie is good.

Thank you for giving a bunch of wins to that father-son scene. It seriously made me tear up just thinking about it. It's so fucking touching, and... It's weird to say, but it feels so REAL. It's a scene where a father tells his son that he's a superhero. That shouldn't be able to be portrayed realistically, and yet... The emotions of that scene feel more real than 99.99% of scenes in all films in history. Maybe you'll do it later, but so far you haven't mentioned how amazing that kid is. Seriously great acting. Not just great acting for a kid, great acting. Period.

It's actually "Davis Duffield." lmao

I guess I gotta do a third comment. lol I never saw it as Elijah giving up anything. His heart is broken, because he thought he was the hero, and it turns out he's the villain. But, he also knows who he is. He can throw away the trappings of the normal life he pretended to live and embrace the villain that he was always destined to become... From his point of view. "Now we know who I am..." is such a powerful line. Heartbreaking and triumphant at the same time. And, you're right of course, that Samuel L. "Motherfucking" Jackson just runs a masterclass in that scene. I don't know that anyone else could really have done that the same kind of justice. Finally, there's the thing you bring up twice, that I had never thought about before: What if David Dunn is alive? Even just saying that gives me the excitement shivers. It would be the perfect Shyamalanian twist. Set up flawlessly, and executed... Competently. lol Because you're right, that story does imply that, while David is weak to water, and it can kill him, once he's away from it he heals. And, frankly, that would excuse a terrible ending to an otherwise great film. I think we were all a little confused about the end of Glass... and now that I think about it, that confusion only really makes sense in the context of a larger twist. As you said, "the best twist is the kind where nothing else would make sense." (Or something like that)

Just want to point out that the cartoon around 10:45 is an episode from the 1998 Powerpuff Girls show. It's about a female villain who disguises herself as a normal, kind woman to (in lack of a better term) seduce the Professor in an attempt to force the girls to entirely stop using their superpowers in order to get away with her own villainy. It's the disguised version showing some of her true colours in the clip. The episode is called "Mommy Fearest" if anyone wants to check it out, or look up a more detailed plot synopsis.

Ever notice that the fight with the man in the house is a parallel to the comic book young Elijah receives? The hero in green vs the villain in yellow(-ish... I mean, hey, orange fur), the comic originally surrounded by the purple foreshadowing the fact that Elijah is more of less responsible for the encounter happening in the first place? Outstanding.

The comic young Elijah got makes me wonder if Shayamalan had plans for Split and Glass way back then or just took inspiration when the time came.

I think he always knew he was different. He just didn’t want to accept it. So much that when the accident happens, he not only makes up the story of being hurt, he also knew he could rip the door off the car and even checked to see if there was no one seeing it.

the first trailer for this, and the only one i saw, gave nothing away. not even the fact this was a "comic book movie". and i loved that fact. the reveal of Mr Glass as the real villain was the second surprise. the first was the genre the film was in itself. it made watching this for the first time an amazing experience. and was one of the big reasons I just adore seeing films blind. couple other things. 1) the weightlifting scene, it doesn't play well here, but on dvd on a big screen, you really see his head changing color as he's doing that. i dunno if it was done in post, but it really stood out to me. and 2), the train station sequence is my favorite scene. that score, which i still listen to on its own on occasion, is phenomenal.

Couldn't agree more with your analysis and praise! This is one of my favorites as well, and I gotta admit I was shocked at the ridiculously harsh negative reviews it got from "professional" critics after its release. As you said, the main criticism was that "horror of horrors" M Night had another twist ending! OMG how will we survive? We critics are SO insulted, as we all EXPECTED a twist and you didn't SURPRISE is with this movie as well! lol The other criticisms were that David was too morose and dull. Well that was what Shyamalan was GOING for, you idiots! Or the "friends don't shoot each other". How that line was mocked, as if it's so ridiculous. What the hell would ANYONE reasonably expect to come up with in such a situation, a child pointing a gun at his father over breakfast? Idiots. Self-important idiots. Sorry. Just a little pissed. :) Another great movie scuttled at the box office because of self-absorbed arrogant band-wagoneering "critics" all copying each others' moronic criticisms and striving to look sophisticated and hard-to-please. This movie was a masterpiece. I call movies that when I can't find any flaws that I'd have removed after MANY repeat viewings.

Spoiler warning for "Glass": It just occurred to me that the only other (temporary) survivor of the Eastrail 177 train accident in this (2:18) scene may very well have been Clarence Wendell Crumb. Knowing Shyamalan, I wouldn't put it past him. It also solidifies the moment when both of Mr. Glass' creations are truly born and foreshadows the fact that the accident resulted in two superpowered beings. I believe this idea was sparked when Lee mentioned that David is wearing a greenish-yellow shirt in the same scene; a blending of two very significant colors in this series to add a subtle foreshadowing, unintentional or otherwise.

Great review, I really liked this film when I first saw it and it would still be a really great film if it came out today. There is not a lot in Shyamalan's movies that define the time periods, you could show this, The Sixth Sense, or Signs to someone who has never seen or heard of them before and I think they would struggle to pick the year it was filmed. I loved the Alanis Morrisette ending :)

The most realistic superhero movie and one of my favorites. I was a little annoyed though that his “weakness” is also a weakness for everybody else 😄 And I haven’t seen the other two movies yet, but I still wish that MNS found a way to bring Hayley Joel into his Superhero Universe given his “gift”. (He wouldn’t recognize David as looking like his therapist, of course 😉. And no spoilers pls if that DID happen in any form)

I actually don't like David Dunn as a character, at all. In fact, I like Elijah a lot more. Maybe it's just the cliche of the angsty teenager relating to the people who don't know their place in the world. The people who do bad things to find themselves a place. The people who have tragic lives. But honestly, if that's what it is, then I'm fine with it. I never hated Elijah as a character for setting up the accidents. In fact, I was really just in awe at the ending of the movie. And Elijah's line "They called me Mr. Glass" makes me cry every time because it's so packed full of emotion. I don't really know what I'm feeling, but im feeling it hard

2:18 This is also a win because throughout the scene, David is surrounded by blue, literraly heads deep under the surrounding medical walls. It's all blue and shadowy and even his shirt is turned is slightly shaded blue. It all feels similar to being underwater. The curfews left and right are caging him in, solidifying the fear of drowning, of water.
