I always took Joker's "You wouldn't get it" line as the fact that he never understood why he finds some things funny, like killing the wall street guys, and other people laugh at other things. Like at the comedy show when Arthur didn't laugh at the actual punch lines. But now he understands that; he sees that the "average" person doesn't find what he finds funny. And he now knows how to convey that in speech.

A villain being somewhat sympathetic and having an inner life and motivations doesn't make them an antihero. It just makes them a good villain. An interesting one, possibly a well-written one. But I guess people who are 100% used to cardboard cutout cackling Skeletor villains might make that mistake.

I like good villains, it makes the fight feel less about who punches harder and more of a struggle between two ideals. Everybody is the hero of their own story, this is the key to writing a good villain. Nobody is evil for evils sake, sure you'll have the occasional twat that just wants to watch the world burn, but even they would have a reason for it. Whether it vengeance or belief that humans are a parasite to be purged.

@@SherrifOfNottingham Yeah. My favorite villains are the ones who are basically right - or they're right enough for me to actually be kind of unsure if it's a good or a bad thing that they're defeated. Villains who have a true, coherent and pretty reasonable point are the *best*. Magneto when handled well is a good example. He has a point - humans ARE treating mutants horribly. Killmonger in Black Panther came close, he had a bunch of really good points, but was undermined by turning out to be a standad-fare megalomaniac. Marvel, especially in the movies, have a bad habit of Skeletorizing their MCU villains… Loki was probably the villain that came closest, at least in the first Thor movie he had a coherent motivation and a kind of legit grievance against Odin…

I've argued this with so many people who insist it is unnecessary, it is one of the reasons I grew critical of JK Rowling years before she showed her true colours. My problem here is that it doesn't work for the Joker. He's supposed to be as unsympathetic as possible he's supposed to be evil for the sake of being evil him having a backstory makes him less interesting as a result. @SandraNLN2 жыл бұрын
@@zachbahamutson5477 But isn't that the point of the ambiguity of the film? Is it real? is it not? Is Joker just telling a BS story to us to f*** with us? He's an arbiter of chaos, this movie IS chaotic. Sympathizing with him is the last thing you should be doing, except at the very beginning (because the story wants you off your guard). The film doesn't change the nature of his character or villainy being interesting, because it stops you from thinking of him as just a 2-dimensional cardboard villain. We don't know what is true, therefore everything and nothing is true.
@jasoncampbell35582 жыл бұрын
I will say, the way this movie is filmed and directed, does give the impression that you are seeing this story from the perspective of someone with a shattered psyche. Everything feels fuzzy, we see some things that are real, but others either don't make sense or aren't a complete picture, we seemingly only get one side of the story, and by the end it's hard to tell what details are reality and what is just Arthurs broken mind trying to phantom. In a way, this film is a great adaptation of what it's like for someone to slowly lose their mind. An interesting movie honestly.

This movie made me feel so very uncomfortable, and it was bloody amazing for doing so. Such an amazing movie. People complaining about it making them uncomfortable completely missed the point of both the movie and of the joker. It isn't supposed to be comfortable, it isn't a fun romp through comic book land, this is about someone with mental illness going through their worst possible day and the force of nature that it brought to the world. A reminder that we are all one bad day away from being homeless, jailed, or dead. The joker appeals to people because we all have so much more in common with the joker than we do with any hero, especially Batman. But that realization also congress with a long list of dark truths we actively fight to run and or hide from. Good art makes us feel things, not always things we want to feel.

This movie took the "One bad day" concept from The Killing Joke and made it into "One hell of a bad life", my God watching Arthur getting phisically and mentally hurt by everything around him was so unconfortable and sad, and once he embraces being the Joker and begins chaos, its scary to think that I was rooting for him, I knew that what he was doing was clearly insane and he was descending into tragedy, but it was so satisfying to see him release himself and go wild, from his point of view he was ascending, and he was going higher than ever before, for once in his miserable life he was truly having fun. And then comes the realization that it was probably all in his head. What was real? What wasn't? Maybe none of that happened at all! But I guess if the Joker has a past, he prefers it to be multiple choice.

Joker was such a fantastic watch. It has spectacular filmmaking, incredible acting, and an otherworldly score. It’s fantastic. One of the things I noticed in the theatre was the lack of straight, even lines in the majority of the film. Everything until the finale felt slanted, off center, and abnormal. It was uncomfortable to watch, unnerving in an unspoken sort of way. Exactly as the Joker should feel. The existence of a backstory for a villain is something I will always adore, as well. A well crafted villain is, in my opinion, one who is just on the border of being correct. They are right, they have a point… they simply mishandle it or ruin it somehow. Joker manages this wonderfully. You can see the reason to his actions, you WANT to empathize, and stop because this is a villain who does horrible things. Joker made the Joker more than just a force of nature chaos guy who does what he does for his own twisted entertainment. It made the Joker a man who does what he does because it’s the only thing he can think to do. And the unreliable narration, the fantasy and potential for the entire thing to be a complete lie? The cherry on top. The masterstroke on the whole narrative. The fact that we don’t know how much is true and how much simply isn’t… just. Perfection. It’s a very well made film about a tricky subject matter. But personally, it’s a 10/10. It did what it set out to do and I respect the hell out of the filmmakers for it.

To explain #2 briefly, the "And Everyone Clapped" meme is any story (usually in the 4chan >greentext< style) that starts out ordinary but gets slowly more and more unbelievable before ending with something totally unrealistic and the line "and everyone clapped". When you think about all the events in the story, *especially* when he shoots those guys and makes his escape, it just makes the events seem more and more unbelievable; How did he get away for so long? HOW did anyone know WHICH cop car the Joker was in? And it ends with LITERALLY EVERYONE CLAPPING (and then not to mention a psychiatric ward with NOBODY ELSE in it as he walks away scot-free). This movie is The Joker giving himself a "multiple choice" origin story ala Killing Joke.

I like to think the ending is him after hearing about Thomas Wayne. A guy so confident that he punches a mentally ill person, a guy who lives behind guards and gates, a guy who refused to give Arthur a second of his time is just gunned down in a random act, and that Joe Chill (maybe, they don't really say here) may have been inspired, or at least felt like he was allowed to commit such an act, by him, is hilarious to him. Revenge even when incarcerated, revenge from afar.
@digitaldragon1012 жыл бұрын
20:35 I always disagree with the idea of "Batman is beating up the mentally ill". He's fighting the criminally insane, people who are actively murdering and/or terrorizing the people of Gotham. He's not just randomly beating up people with depression or schizophrenia or anything like that, he goes after murderers. And even then, we see him try to redeem them, try to help them when he can.

A great analysis overall! But I must disagree with the scene where Joker stands above his adoring fans. I never saw that scene as him finally being recognized and supported. Rather, that was where Arthur realized he would never find support or solace. Ordinary Gothamites didn’t care about him or each other, or making Gotham a better place. They wanted to be as vile and unstoppable as the rich and powerful. *They only loved Joker for having the balls to confess his crimes and then commit another one on live TV, with no interest in Arthur’s sob story.* Arthur smiling and dancing was tearfully subsuming himself into the Joker persona for good, not a moment of triumph but total defeat.

I know what its like to be without anti depressants for extended times and the misery it entails...i once was in such a stressed situation involving an emotionally abusive friend that i started laughing out loud in a resturant in a foreign country out of pure stress. I also used to dance when no one looked to have a little bit of clarity when i was younger. I feel Arthurs frustration, the constant screaming for help untill you are too tired to whisper, the hope getting dashed and twisted, the lack of social understanding in some moments. Its painful and honestly laughter is one of the few none destructive ways to cope...laugh at your misery and you will have the company it loves.

I'm honestly not sure how to interpret the second Joker film. It's gonna have Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, and a long time ago I would've thought that was a terrible casting choice, but after A Star Is Born, I realize she's got some chops. The way I see it, the film will be an adaptation of the therapy sessions seen in Mad Love. It'll be that but the majority of the film will be set in the Arkham institution. Like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, but the main character is as sane as the rest of the freaks. I also really hope they don't add anymore from the Batman mythos besides Harley, but if they do, make it VERY realistic. I hope they'll know what they'll do with Clayface is he's added in there.
