"Everything Happens To Me" from Bijan Taghavi's solo piano performance 5.15.24 @ Libretto (Paso Robles, CA).
This was the first stop of my recent Solo-Duo-Trio Southwest Tour, where I performed 3 shows in 3 nights, starting with this special solo piano performance in Paso Robles, CA. What a treat it was to perform in this cozy space on this AMAZING Steinway D 9ft ARTIST Concert Grand.
This was a sneak preview of my upcoming solo piano album, Cactus Sessions, which was recorded at the end of this tour and will soon be released later in 2024!
It was great to do this exclusive preview it in front of such an appreciative and INTERACTIVE audience, engaged in the music and my stories about the tunes. The comment that meant the most to me after the show was an audience member who said that they liked how all 88 keys and all possibilities of sound (loud vs soft & colors) were explored. It felt like a full circle moment because when I studied with Fred Hersch & Phil Markowitz in NYC, that’s what they would always stress on me while discussing the IMPORTANCE of solo piano.
It’s a naked setting without the comfort bass & drums, but that challenge is the same thing that makes it FUN! There were numerous times that night where I spontaneously changed the meter or groove of the tune in the moment. I hope you enjoy this journey on "Everything Happens To Me".

Thanks so much! Yea Bill‘s harmonic conception was masterful. I got to play and record with the last drummer who played in Bill’s Trio, the great Joe LaBarbera. And Joe showed me several tapes of Bill’s practice sessions that nobody has ever heard before and it is quite remarkable - a lot of people think of Bill as a harmonic genius who was a great ballad player, but in his practice tapes you can hear him sounding like a Bud Powell clone. Of course he never performed like that, but that fact that he had that in him just goes to show how well rounded of a cat Bill really was.
