A little #Shorts for you all to show everything (or at least some of what) I can do in a corset, including cartwheels, singing professionally (whilst definitely breathing), and touching my toes!
This was a fun little video to put together, and hopefully, it supports the point that historical fashion and historical corsets probably aren't restrictive as the myths and narratives general society likes to propel. Obviously, this is all anecdotal and everyone's experience with the corset will be different, but here's mine!
Please note: It's because of my body and my ability (mainly a hypermobility condition) that makes it possible for me to put on and fasten my shoes in a corset. Not everyone is able to put on their shoes in a corset and that's completely okay! We're all different and that's a beautiful thing. My intention in sharing this part was to demonstrate my own personal experience.

@@sometimessnarky1642 while you can’t tight lace a corset after the first months of pregnancy (once you start to show), you can absolutely be pregnant in a corset. Women, including queen Victoria wore corsets through pregnancy as they still needed back and bust support. If you could afford it, you could even buy special maternity corsets which adjusted even more to the pregnant body than ordinary corset that most women wore. A corset doesn’t need to be tight laced, and there are different ways of lacing them to adjust the pressure on the abdomen for example. And no, they were under the impression that women couldn’t become pregnant if they wore corsets daily (when you can in fact get pregnant even if you are wearing a corset during intercourse). Apparently they thought that corsets prevented ovulation!

Yes! There is a huge difference between corsetry and tight lacing! Tight lacing can actually be dangerous if done too tight or wrong and shouldn't be worn long term
@VBirchwood

Definitely! And I think those who want to tightlace, they understand the risks, communicate with their doctors, and act responsibly (hopefully). But it’s always so silly to me that every single corset and corset wearer is often grouped when, like anything, it’s about how something is utilised/practiced rather than the thing itself.

@@queerqueen098 Tight lacing actually started in the 1820s, when metal eyelets were first introduced, and continued through the victorian period, though almost exclusively used by the upper classes and people of French court where the trend began(not anyone who'd be doing any physical labour), it wasn't something everyone was doing back then and was more of a show of privilege/wealth. People get all into the waist reduction part of a corset (thank you movies 🙄) while forgetting the original use was to support the breasts as there wasn’t a VS store around. If one isn’t tight lacing, which is another style, really, corsets are quite comfortable. I love how good period clothing looks when wearing the actual foundation garments that give them the historical shape. For example, I wear mostly 50-60s clothing and wearing a modern bra with rounded, molded cups underneath destroys the silhouette. Think Marilyn Monroe and her pointed breasts. I’m rambling but I’m trying to agree with you. Lol

Having worn corsets (steel boned and all) for ten hours a day while performing at ren faires, and watching the character actors do ALL THE THINGS in high quality period dress (like ride horses, "duel," etc.) I have first hand experience in how easy they can be to wear for daily life. As long as you're not tight lacing they can be extremely comfortable and helpful for daily activities. It sure helped me carry musical instruments and other things for those long days, that's for sure. I am a dog walker. I also have back problems that can at worst profoundly limit my mobility. A corset is one part of how I keep myself moving without a cane, functioning without serious limitations, and out of pain. I haven't worn one consistently since I moved to southern Virginia (where it is HOT 3/4 of the year) and I can really tell a difference in my mobility and pain levels. I've adjusted my exercise regimen to accommodate (more exercise *for me* means less pain and better mobility), but again, I'm a dog walker. It's not always easy to fit in more exercise on top of ±10 miles a day walking: even when the time is there for another hour of yoga or swimming the energy is a big ask on my body. But it's just not possible to walk at all if I backslide on my routine and my legs start to go numb and stop functioning. Thus the corset is the easy option, and it looks great too! 😊 I'm very fortunate to have found such a beneficial, relatively inexpensive (when compared to medical costs) and frankly sexy addition to my health arsenal.

Corset discourse has genuinely been a major factor in my revisiting my understanding of history. Like, the snap assumption that every corseted woman (1800s and earlier) just had to sit around and do nothing. Like a) it's wildly classist to think that every woman could afford to be idle, and just sat around until they were 'allowed' to work and b) people before the modern era weren't stupid. They wouldn't mildly suffocate all day every day for fashion.

The only one I’ve heard that I kinda believe is that wearing a corset is bad for you as it may squish ur organs. May, as in, if u wear it very tight. I imagine u don’t have to wear a corset as tight as some people make it seem they were worn. Corsets are also starting to become part of fashion, so if any of these things were true, you’d think we’d be seeing that failing. But nah, seems about as popular as those body belt harnesses.

I think tightlacing gets a lot of focus because it’s extreme, but historically tightlacing was only popular amongst the upper class and only for a short duration of time (late Victorian to Edwardian). The active bit always makes me giggle. I worked events ranging from fantasy (and therefore, do what you gotta underneath, keep the outside fine for the tourists) to actual required historically accurate kit. While the ACTIONS I might have been doing had NO relationship to how a woman would act - I could still: climb trees, ride horseback bareback (even do some tricks like swap directions on it's back and pull myself off when riding under a low hanging sturdy branch), swing a sword so on, pull a bow. The only things that ever really were miserable to do in a "proper" corset? The shows I had to get 'kidnapped' by a highwayman, a knight, a viking, etc. Corsets physical flaw once you get used to them? Getting tossed over someone's shoulder and carried off.. A state I'm rather hoping wasn't a common occurrence for women in history. At least, I'm hoping 'kidnapping' didn't happen sometimes 4x a day 5x on weekends. Once or twice a week was SURELY enough lol. Anything women wore to run after a child or was expected to cook over a fire in is gonna be wearable in most situations.

Love this, know this and obviously believe you - however, I cannot wrap my head around that in periods with more tight fitting corsets (not refering to tight lacing), such as the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th, wearers could not possibly take deep breaths? I'm thinking about those "yoga breaths" that we're suppose to do. Most of us breath too shallowly. Can one do "stomach breathing" with corsets? Anyone have thoughts on this? :)

Thank you! You definitely can, in fact, diaphragmatic breathing is fully possible in a corset and if anything it encourages those muscles to strengthen. @@beepboop7090 I never tightlace, in fact often corsets add about an inch of bulk to my waist, and I get corsets that are historical so they’re far more comfortable, and save up for custom fit corsets for optimal comfort. The bones inside are also generally synthetic whalebone which is far more comfortable in my opinion and more similar to how they would have been historically before steel bones became more of a thing.

THIS is exactly why I call malarkey on Emma Watson's "feminist" decision not to wear a corset in the Beauty and the Beast remake. Corsets weren't invented by the patriarchy to be some sort of death trap for men's pleasure, they were essentially the equivalent of a modern day bra. They support the body to fit the clothes and make life a little easier with two permanent watermelons strapped to your chest.

Corsets back then are like modern day bras just that they help with your back pain by keeping you in the right posture. It was also made in such material that we definitely cannot get anymore which is a type of animal bone that overtime morph into your waist shape as your wear your corset more and more, basically corset that fits you. They fit you if you stop goddamn tight-lacing

It's very different to be fair (at least in my experience). Because of the absence of elastic, there's a lot of space between the wearer and the corset still. Unlike a bra where it is literally right against your skin and is skin tight at times. A lot of people I know who hate bras absolutely love corsets (myself included). Obviously, the corset has to be worn safely, not tight laced, and also well-fit.

I put together some costumes for a small opera show a while back; the aesthetic the director wanted was “steampunk” so of course I put the female lead in a corset. I was so nervous at the first fitting that she wouldn’t be able to breathe well enough to sing. She assured me that she actually loves wearing corsets to perform because they give her lungs and diaphragm something to push against and she feels like she has better breath control when she wears them.

What people always get wrong is that not all corsets are worn as tight as you see it in those movies. Some just wear it for back protection, no bras at the time, etc. Most of the time those uncomfortable looking corsets were only worn when in a ball, and most of the time it's only the high class who wears them.

I'm someone who wears modern steal bones corsetry on a regular basis. I wear it hiking, climbing, and even while I work in housekeeping. A properly fitted and properly laced corset is a comfortable support garment, not a steal cage that prevents you from moving. Extreme tight lacing can cause discomfort and make breathing difficult. But that's your own fault for lacing too tight, not the corset.

I also feel like people should know by now that corsets will hurt if they are not made for you. People have different bone structures, hold fat in different places, pull and stretch in different ways so a good corset is one that is specifically tailored to your body. If you simply buy one from any store, more likely than not it is not going to fit well and you will be in pain. Corsets were used by women to hold their boobs but also offer back support, help with posture, etc. And men wore them for much of the same reasons too except they also wanted to give the illusion of a flat more toned stomach.

I wear a corset occasionally just to go out and about my day because I like the way they look and they help my bad back. When I get questions about how uncomfortable they are or if I can actually breath in them I always tell people “if you can’t breath, it doesn’t fit you right. If you are uncomfortable the entire time you’re wearing it or it cuts off any kind of circulation, then it does not fit you and you need a different size and or style.”

This is definitely my own experience for sure, also as someone with a hypermobility condition. The reason I mention that aspect is just because people tend to group all corsets together as being impossible to put your shoes on in, but some people still can.
