Yes, I wish they had even the sisters talk about something they seen on the surface but it’s implied the king had the power to give them the ability to turn into humans and have their own “rumspringa” so to speak, and explore it and come back.

@@Seabasstard22The original tale goes to great lengths to separate the littlest mermaid from the rest of the characters.They got raised with tales of the above world by their all knowing grandma, when a mermaid turns 15 she has the free pass to go to the surface whenever she wants.Every sister fell in love with the human world, and brought stories with them ( with those peculiar 🤭 humans on the center of most of them ),but after a month of each spending time on the surface they got bored and returned to the bottom of the ocean 🌊 ... The littlest never got bored of it , also they have no souls and cease to exist ( to which the grandmother is waaaaaay too cheel about it ) and the Littlest is the ONLY one concerned about their non existing afterlives ... The book is overall superior to any of it's adaptations ,her obsession with the world and later on the prince,the characters and their relationships to each other are better developed ... One change that kinda bugs me about the '89 film is that,in the book she is obsessed with a human statue (no relation to the prince ), and when she sees the prince she fells for him because of his likeness to it ( also the moment has greater significance because it was her first time above water , instead of being kinda random like the '89 film ), growing obsessed with him after month's of stalking him ... In the Disney version the statue IS Eric's, If they did it like the book , establish a relationship with the statue it would hit waaay harder when king Triton destroyed it,because we'd have an emotional connection to it ... As a kid I felt way worse for the music box she interacts with during 🎶 Part of your World 🎶 than the statue 🗽 ... 😂😂😂 They should have done more with the sister's, even in the animation they felt a bit superfluous while In the book they have a very heartwarming and strong bond with their sister ...

Since Halle thinks that I'm a racist, I don't like her. It was just that she sings Part of Your World with a bad emotion, and Under The Sea and For The First Time as well. She's a singer, but her voice is not acting properly. And then she goes with like: "I know people are like: 'It’s not about race.' But now that I'm her..." I used to say that she doesn't look like Ariel, and now they make Ariel look like Halle... This disgusts me.

I loathed the hell out of this movie. They made Ariel an unlikable strong-female-character who doesn't let any of the side characters do anything, the new songs are garbage, awkwafina makes me wish I were dead, ursulas not scary, the acting is weak, the CGI is awful, And it does not offer anything new to the story. This movie was probably written by those who didn't like the original movie for people who didn't like the original movie.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Because the writers claimed that the original film is problematic, how it's about "Ariel just leaving the ocean for a boy", how Halie Bailey claimed that her version is better and said "We are women. We are modern. We are independent. We can do anything. Ect", as well as bullying the fans and calling them sexist and racists, I'm not surprised that this remake was made to cater to not only to feminists and modern audiences, but also to people who don't like (or outright hate) the original film.

Thank you, that is an honest review. I am tired of strong woman stories. I hate them being the only end all be all to everything. Its written by control monsters who don't understand women come in all volumes and can shine when needed but will love to have a guy save her. Would love to be a helper but doesn't want to be the center of 'I can do everything!"..... NO!!. I doubt they will sell merch. (I feel all the strong women control monsters are minimalists and wont spend a dime on merch, they will scream and yell that we should like it but they dont understand the audience at all. If they are trying to get an untapped source audience .... they are loosing their solid audience they had for years) If they are trying to play the guilt trip, its not working, its disrespectful of what they had and they have lost the heart of telling a story and are trying to tell it from flow chart point of view and they wont see the damage they have done until its too late and they have sunk that ship... then they will just move onto some other company to bring down. I would have loved if they made her her own character, different part of the sea, new story (which is what they were trying to fit into an old story and it doesn't work). They could of expanded the water world and had many mermaid princess stories. All the live actions and sadly a lot of newer actors seem stiff and flat. Characters are flat. I may just buy the Soundtrack to just say I am fine with Halle and want to support her in some way but I do not want to support the movie. I wanted to love Beauty and the Beast, I don't hate the actors but again it was stiff. The cartoons have more emotion than they did. Maybe they try to write and direct it like a play that they don't need to have a lot of facial emotion, maybe as a society we are loosing that emotion thats shown through settle body or facial expressions but they are just not enjoyable to me and I feel like its cold acting.

I haven’t seen the movie yet but the under the sea sounded good and looked good so bright etc but they missed the whole Musicality of the fish. The comment of fish being happy but show dolphins 🤦‍♀️. The fish aren’t playing instruments (or don’t become instruments themselves) and it being just Sébastien and Ariel singing left a gap in the performance where we would have had the fish chorus. Ariel joining in was nice but not necessary as it’s supposed to be her lesson.

Let me say one of my worst pet peeves of this movie: Ariel doesn't come ashore by herself with some time to wrap herself in an old sail where she is found by Eric, who is combing the beach everyday hoping to find her again. She's rescued by a boat full of random fisherman. That is such a nightmare to me! Such a horrible, horrible story change! I do not want little girls to think swimming around naked, at sixteen, is a smart move that'll help them become princesses. This is a naked, sixteen year old girl who CANT SCREAM and they have her getting taken on a boat with a bunch of men. It's a horrible, horrible story change and whoever came up with that should be fired.

Great rant and honest review. I do have a question, on the big screen, in places like the grotto and Ursula's lair, can you see more because the trailers makes just seem dark and not lit well at all. You're thoughts? Now I haven't seen the film yet, but I have read the novelization and just from a story point, I have major problems. Particularly the whole "Ariel forgets about the kiss" part of the deal, just why? They want to give her more agency (hence the ending), but the memory thing plus her muteness takes away a lot more of her control of her story. You can say "oh Ariel only did it all because of a boy", but a) you're not wrong that's a thing, especially teenagers, do and b) Ariel always wanted to be human, Ursula was the one who made the "true love" kiss part of the deal. I 'm also not a big fan of, as it''s described in the book, Ariel and Vanessa (the human version of Ursula) basically getting into a "cat fight". They seem to be giving Ariel more "action" things to do for the "girl boss" points. And if you're going to get ride of the "Daughters of Triton", but add Ariel singing to "Under the Sea," why can't that be her sisters instead just to give them more to do. Jus something. Thank you for the review/rant.

The grotto isn't that bad, it just lacks color. Ursula's lair is too dark imo. That's the first thing I thought when Ursula first appeared. The story plot changes aren't that bad. It doesn't really change anything. I even forgot in the middle that Ariel forgot about the kiss. It's just a thing they added or change but doesn't really matter. It's not like "Ariel did it all for a boy" thing doesn't exist anymore. If people think the animation was like that, then it's also the same with the live action. However, Ariel-Vanessa thing, I'm not a fan of. I prefer the original animation where Ariel was helped by the sea animals, but it's, again, not really a major thing. Overall, it's still enjoyable, an okay movie, but not without flaws. It's just not as bad as people say, not as bad as Mulan or Lion King. Just don't watch the animation before the live action.

I have watched it yesterday, with no expectations though everyone are spoiling it for me including my workmates, and I personally agree with your points. One thing I really hate (and agree completely with you) about this movie is how they changed who killed Ursula. In the original cartoon movie, Eric killed Ursula with the ship, but in this movie it's Ariel herself. I understand the need of revenge "feel" for Ariel, but I think it completely deletes the importance of Eric's role. Eric's decision to kill Ursula and save Ariel (and himself) is actually a right decision from the animators because it makes the story comes full circle. I mean, Ariel saved Eric once, and by doing the saving, Eric showed the audience that he reciprocated the feelings Ariel has for him. It's a part of character development for him. The movie completely removes his relevancy by replacing him with the fishermen who found Ariel on the beach. By doing this, it's actually deletes Eric's compassionate character and makes him a spoiled brat. Well, he did harpooned Ursula, but it's just that. His action scenes are reduced, while he's supposed to be a competent sailor. I mean, how the heck Ariel could learn to drive the ship? That is just a plain nonsense. Eric, although is weaker than Ariel in swimming section (because he's a human and human's lung capacity is limited), has experiences at the sea, including sailing, navigation, and combat. He is a badass! But the movie makes him a lovesick sea cowboy with a hobby of sailing but did nothing to display his skills, other than he likes collecting stuffs and seeing constellations. It's frustrating to me since he was my favourite Disney Prince besides Aladdin and Flynn Rider. They butchered his character so badly. Also, Eric's relationship with Grimsby supposed to be like father and son. In this movie, the chemistry is nowhere to be found. Grimsby didn't find Eric after he was saved by Ariel. It was the queen's guardsmen. The queen's role is also nothing but a nagging mother and I found it a waste of talent of Noma Dumezweni (which is actually a great actress). The same thing with Javier Bardem and his portrayal of Triton. It's the worst acting by him, and it's not because he can't act, but because he doesn't have enough material to work with. I don't hate Halle's voice because she's a perfect Ariel in terms of it, but she should've improve her acting too (although I also blamed the crew). Besides her singing, I think the director should give Halle more directions on acting, because Ariel's expressions and body languages are the KEY to this movie's plot. She can't talk when she's human, so she needs to be more expressive. The movie ends up being mediocre because of the writers, but (sorry Halle) I don't get the portrayal of expressiveness and curiosity the animated Ariel has in this movie either. Halle's acting is very bland compared to previous actors of Disney Princesses: Elle Fanning's Aurora, Naomi Scott's Jasmine, and Lily James' Cinderella. They all captured the essence of Disney Princesses so well. For the voice department, Halle rocks hard. But, I cannot see her as Ariel. She's far more calmer than the cartoon Ariel, who is supposed to be a spirited and excited explorer. I also didn't feel chemistry between her and Jonah that much.
@clairelin0216
@clairelin0216 Жыл бұрын
I remember Ariel's actress in the original animated version was Sherri Stoner, and she's so expressive that you can feel all the emotions and unvoiced words on her face. I think they take out the chemistry part on purpose because they think having Ariel pursuing Eric like in the animated version would be Ariel only become human for a man, but if they put that argument in there, then they shouldn't put Ariel's I want song in there because Ariel's I want song is about everything she wants to do as a human and she didn't say in that song that all she wants is a husband, which makes the song Part of Your World not as impactful when the song should be carrying the plot forward. And even when love isn't the only motivation for Ariel, it is still a strong catalyst for her decision, we can understand that love makes people do crazy things, and watching the animated version, they already told you in one song that Ariel didn't give up her voice just for a man and we're aware of that. We don't have to be told again and again how the entire thing wasn't just for Eric. I agree Ariel should be more expressive as she was made in the animated version to be very expressive because she can't speak most of the time. I remember listening to someone who worked on the 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid that any kind of backstories for the characters were cut because they wanted to put more focus on Ariel and Eric's relationship, the backstories were also deleted to avoid confusion and complications in the story, that's why when you look at Disney princes, none of them have a backstory, the most you can get out of them is probably that the king and queen died, because they're not yet at the age that they would take the throne as king, they're still just princes or the kin is still alive and thus the prince title, but it was never too complicated because fairytales are supposed to be like that, just stories with a simple structure. And with more focus on the love story aspect, they could put more effort on working with the chemistry between the characters which is lost in this remake.

You have pointed out a lot of what is wrong with this movie perfectly. The first time I watched it I thought it was superior to the animated one but now ... not anymore. It kinda has something very charming to me but I couldn't say exactley what it is ... I must have watched it like 10 times. Three times in theathers and the rest of times at home. I love Halle Bailey as Ariel. To me she looks pretty much just like the animated one. Her performance was not the best in this film but I think it was really more the fault of the dialogue and the directions she was given than her talent as an actress. It could have been a way better film if they would have kept Ariel as crazy in love with Eric as she was in the animated one, have had Javier playing mad King Triton, more fantastical art designs like the golden castle underwater, the humanoid sea creatures, etc. Also prince Eric ... I really see something very lovely going on between him and Ariel but I kinda feel that the way their relationship starts in the library ... I don't really buy it. It hurts me saying it but well. It's frankly sad since the animated one have always been my favourite movie in the world and I have always wanted a live version of it. Also I've always wanted to see Ariel and Eric having a conversation and see what they're like together once Ariel has her voice back but having in mind how messed up is that he eats crabs ... I don't know. Even though I love both movies I can't understand how Ariel is able to fall in love with someone who eats the species she's a friend with. I would never be with someone who eats dogs or cats. I'm not vegan and I understand that eating a chicken for example is somehow as bad as eating a dog or a cat but somehow it's not exactly the same ... I think that because it's more of a kids movie (both) they don't take this too seriously and leave it there because the animated one even with that in mind is a lovely movie. It's more like up to us to imagine that Eric stops eating animals and becomes a vegan just like Ariel and her family.

The lazy writing on why all the sisters look different is that apparently a merfolks appearance depends on what waters the parents were when conception took place. For example if two white merfolk went on vacation to the African coast and had some fun, the child would be born black. I can accept that in different waters around the world there would be different colors of merfolk just like in real life with humans, I can accept that Triton had a wife in each sea even tho that would destroy his original character as a loyal monogamous husband. But by saying "oh your merfolk ethnicity depends on what waters you were born in and not the genetics of your parents" is a bit insulting just to justify diversity. It also sounds a bit racist, sounding like "you can't identify as X unless you were born in Y" sort of thing.

Thanks for the review Chelsea! It sounds like this movie is basically just like all the other Disney remakes: A movie full of a talented cast that follows a similar story to the original, but not as good. Some of the changes you mentioned sound interesting, but they belong in abother story with completely different mermaid & human characters. These changes sound like they're missing the point of the original. P.S. The journal sounds cool! I'm looking into and thanks for the link!

The whole thing feels soulless. It really is a crappy remake that Disney felt was imperative to force upon this woke agenda throughout this dark, dull, inconsistent, and horrendous adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story as well as the 1989 animated classic that saved the animation studio and started the Disney Renaissance until The Lion King was released back in 1994. Jodi Benson > Halle Bailey. It’s only gonna get worse when they release Moana, Hercules, Lilo & Stitch, and Hunchback Of Notre Dame. #NoMoreDisneyRemakes 🧜🏻‍♀️

Brandys Cinderella never explained. That’s the point of a blind cast. Since they are fish I would assume they would reproduce like them which can explain the differences. We also have to remember triton is a god and gods had a lot of different kids by several different women. Honestly children aren’t going to be worried about how he got the kids that’s more of an adult concept. I like what they did with Eric. I think it makes his connection to Ariel more realistic. They both have a yearning to be no pun intended part of that world. They are longing for something different. Also you know that Ariel’s mother was killed by humans and triton saw them as enemies. I don’t think that’s a bad thing to take away considering she didn’t even know Eric. Never met the man once but was claiming in love based off just seeing him. I think it’s good that our girls know that’s not realistic. A man also was never the main motivation she had been wanting to go to the human world for a while hence the collection. She just never was motivated until after he destroyed her stuff. Eric was alway just a bonus. Maybe since you know that doesn’t work out you wouldn’t want someone to change everything about themselves for a man. Unless you learned nothing from that 😅 That’s not in the least what it’s telling you. Ariel got herself into the mess and she got herself out of it with the help of those around her. She wasn’t out there completely alone. Key word here is help. Yeah she may have been the one to impale her but without the help of her friends from the jump she would’ve never known Vanessa was Ursula. She would have never got her voice back and it would have ended like the original tale with her as seafoam.

This is entirely logical and is useful from a critical standpoint, which is helpful. Basing your opinion on a story simply because of skin color is racist. And basing it entirely on your own preference and your own emotions is selfish. This is just pure logic and it's refreshing. We can't base all critical thinking on Halle Bailey fanfare. This is so true. If it were really clear that Eric loves the ocean and Ariel loves the land, then they'd never be happy together. They want to be in entirely different places.

@clairelin0216
@clairelin0216 Жыл бұрын
In the animated version, Ariel and Eric saved each other, they're already a balanced couple, the reason why we see this in the animated version is because up until that point in time in the late 80s, Disney decided that they would give both the male and female lead more character and they would both be more active in the story than before, we can see hints of this in Sleeping Beauty, but it's not until we see The Little Mermaid that they actually put in this idea of having balanced couple. Ariel pulled Eric up from the sea and saved his life in the middle of the storm, even for people with impossible standards, saving someone's life is still the most you can do on that scale. Much later, when we see Ariel taken away by Ursula, we see Eric jumping into the sea, swam all the way down there to throw a harpoon at Ursula, distracting Ursula enough to make Ursula change her target to let Ariel get away from Ursula's grip. When Ursula decided to kill Eric, Ariel pulled on Ursula's hair to make Ursula just missed Eric, and she became the first Disney princess that actually killed some characters in a Disney movie because of it. Later, Eric climbed onto a ship with a broken bow at the front in the middle of the crazy storm that Ursula had created, and he drove that ship into Ursula while Ursula is focused on killing Ariel. Now, for the people who said that Eric has no reason to kill Ursula. First of all, Ursula was a threat, when Eric killed her, she was a giant sea monster holding an obvious glowing weapon in the middle of a crazy storm. Second, she used Ariel's voice to trick Eric into marrying her, and now she's trying to kill the girl that he is sure that is his true love. Eric had plenty of reasons to end Ursula. It was also established in the animated version that not only was Ariel not have the experiences needed for steering ships, her mermaid tail also makes it impossible for her to stand, and steering ships need some things: Good upper body strength to control the wheel and turn the wheel in a certain direction for the ship to change it's course when needed with consistent force, good lower body strength to stay upright and stable and not letting the wheel block your target, and experiences with the activity. Just like how watching someone drive for hours doesn't make you a good driver if you've never drove a car before, steering ships is the same, you can't just learn from watching someone do it. Now on the plot perspective. The original conflict in the plot was that Triton hated humans, he believes that humans are good for nothing than destruction, for him, humans are barbarians incapable of any genuine feelings and noble actions. But Eric was shown to be a good human by the way he talks with his subjects, how he prefers to humble himself seen in the expression that he didn't like the idea of people portraying him in the strong and regal image with the statue, he goes back on the burning ship just to save his dog. And later, when the woman he loves is in danger, he literally dived into the sea and killed a sea monster for her. Eric is everything you could ever want in a guy, brave, noble, kind, humble, sweet and you can be sure that he is ready to fight monsters for you if he says he cares. Also, by Eric's heroic act to protect Ariel that almost got him killed, it resolved Triton's prejudice on humans because Eric also saved Triton in the process of saving Ariel, Triton was touched by Eric's noble action, and he's shown to respect Eric for the noble action, and he gave his blessings for Eric to marry Ariel as a father. Triton acknowledged Eric as an equal royal on the land and the son-in-law that he's proud of. The problems with this remake are more about changing the established character's appearances, it's taking a balanced couple and make it unbalanced, it's claiming that the main character's motivations for doing what she did were always about just one thing when she sang a whole song about her motivations, it's claiming that the male character did nothing when he actually risked his life for his wife and actually make him do nothing with the remake, it's claiming that the original animation was problematic and they need to change it while most of the changes changed nothing or leave more plot holes than before they were ever changed, it is the need to push for girl power while the original female lead is far from always being a damsel in distress, it is the lazy effort that they're not willing to create new characters with relatable problems and want to milk the old IPs of it's magic and life and claim it as their own new idea, the acting is really lacking considering how expressive Ariel is and basically the expressive characters are all reduced to having very little expressions, the lack of contrast in the colors to make the characters stand out, and of course the sea background and CGIs that look like they're dead on the inside. The reason why Disney's stories tend not to deal with backstories with princes is because dealing with backstories takes up a lot of time, the story drag on and loses its focus on what they're trying to tell. And yes, love is like a catalyst to a lot of actions, but why are we acting like women falling in love with men is forbidden? It's not like when you find someone who is the very definition of everything that you dreamed of in a partner and you're going to be like "I'm not going to love this person." My first ever animated crush was Eric, when you look into his character, he's the definition of husband material. Brave, noble, kind, sweet, he's a very considerate and supportive guy, what more could you want? And don't tell me he didn't have character because the year 1989 is the year they decided to make men have character. The original animated version has a soul, this live action remake is soulless.

Not to mention the remake is claimed to have "a modern spin" meaning its narrative is now realistic and logical (like Beauty and the Beast or Frozen. Despite them being based on fairy tales, logic plays a bigger role in the plot. In comparison, The 1989 Little Mermaid had a more traditional, simple, and emotional like a true legitamite fairytale, like Snow White, meaning the focus is more on the emotion and simplicity while logic takes the back seat like Snow White or the Wizard of Oz). The reason why the climax in the remake doesn't work because it contradicts and ruins its modern spin narrative, something that the cast and crew claimed about the remake. It's illogical, nonsensical, and goes against its modern narrative. Plus, it gave Prince Eric very little to nothing to do, which makes things worse because Eric was given little to nothing to do in the remake's story as a whole just like the supporting characters all because they want to "fix" Ariel by making her a "badass girl boss who don't need no man to save her" in response to the criticism of Ariel being a weak and passive damsel in distress (despite her saving Flounder from a shark, killing Ursula's eels, and saving Eric 2 times).

😆😆 OMG, so on point and LOVE LOVE LOVE your take on how you wonderfully criticise this movie! For the Daughters of Triton multi-racial issue, I came to my personal conclusion that this version is kind of hinting that merfolk biology does not work like human biology- for after all this is a fairy tale and they are mythological species. With respect to turning 'prince' Eric into an adopted kid, didn't stick quite well with me. Noma Dumezweni was great in her acting, but that should not have been her role. She should have been Triton's mother to a) be an actual character from the original Andersen story which would have been so appropriate, and 2) give her role so much more strength and meaning in giving Ariel good advice! To those saying this live-action should not have been made, I completely disagree. What SHOULD have happened was to make this live-action PROPERLY, and TRULY make this live-action THE best! ... maybe a remake? 🤔🤔😁

It is so obvious this is just a racist promoted backlash against the film. I honestly think if black lives matter had not happened, if gay marriage had not happened, if not for the abortion situation, that these conservatives Target all against black people like all of us are responsible for everything going on in the world right now, this movie would just be celebrated a whole lot more. And you can’t accuse ppl of being racist just cus they don’t like this film. Halle was good but ALL the other live action princesses stayed looking like the cartoon. But Ariel was changed. Again it’s not wrong but ppl are entitled to be shocked. Ariel had an established look for over 30 years. Race swapping is lazy. Hopefully Diseny can make new stories with black characters . The 90s was called “Diseny Renaissance “ for a reason. Is the 2010s or 2020s called a Renaissance? No. This live action was cute but it’s not a classic. The 1989 film is.

Why you and those who agree with you compare an animated film to a live action film is for me enough to understand your rant. This is a remake of the animated version so of course it isn’t a carbon copy since this one has real people in it. Enjoy your life and make lemonade y’all

Now let me say this, is it your call? Just get over it and deal with it. I don’t even understand why you think little mermaid is terrible it’s not. Someone needs to make a rant on little mermaid haters.

You’re saying that the diversity is stretching when Ariel is on land and the ppl who are accompanied by Eric’s castle don’t belong in that context.. who are you to say whether they do or don’t belong?

No Ms. Rant. Unfortunately you are in the majority, but I am not going to listen over 20 mins. You complaining about a movie that as a positive message and a movie that's geared for kids? Come On!

As a man, why are you condoning the emasculation of Prince Eric when the OG animated version was an excellent role model for young boys? Oh wait… You are subscribed to The Young Turks, never mind.

@ terrancemoore496 She’s obviously a Karen. She probably also hates Mulan, Princess Tiana, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Brandy’s version of Cinderella, Moana, Lilo, Esmeralda, and that girl from Encanto B/c they’re not blonde white princesses.

The difference being is that jodie bendon could act, whereas halle showed hardly any emotion throughout the whole film. Thst doesn't say Ariel to me.

The original is a CLASSIC girl. I can’t force you to like it that’s fine. But there’s NO excuse for Ariel killing Ursula in the remake. Eric should’ve done it. Was to show Triton not all humans are bad. If you like that change , then you don’t think logically . And the “scuttlebutt “ song is annoying

Can it be shown with black actors? I don't agree that there are no yellow people. It is a serious discrimination and unfairness that there is no yellow actor in the screen. Game of Thrones, Frozen kneeling and licking.

Convoluted storyline? Is adoption really that hard to understand? Why is that such a hard concept to get? Now I’m confused honestly. I think ppl just want straightforward digestible concepts that don’t require basic brain power but maybe that’s just me.. who knows
