@bisexualichigo42274 жыл бұрын
Hahaha true.
@SineN0mine33 ай бұрын
I don't think he was criticising it for being sincere, he says it's sincerity didn't land with him. Maybe if the movie took a more tounge in cheek approach to those scenes, they would have been funnier. He is talking particularly about jokes with that comment. Sincere jokes are very funny if you like them and very unfunny if you don't. Tounge in cheek jokes are less funny because their being lampshaded but they're easier to laugh at because they're less serious. Take Rick and Morty for example, they rarely tell a joke without one of the characters making fun of the joke. The jokes are insincere so if the audience thinks the jokes are obvious then they get to laugh at the response to the joke instead. Ultimately though, the show has hardly anything to say about anything, and the jokes usually result in a long exhale from the nose rather than a sincere chuckle. As a kid I tended to agree with Mason, Disney's humour rarely landed with me. By contrast DreamWorks had a bit more edge to it and I used to find them funnier. I remember going to see Disney animated movies at the cinema with my Grandad and he'd be laughing a deep belly laugh at every single joke. Seeing him laugh at things I thought were "too easy" made me realise that I was taking these things (and by extension, myself) a bit too seriously and then I'd laugh along too. We're all much funnier and cleverer these days but sometimes I miss sincerity in humour. These days things are so drenched in irony you can have your cake and eat it to, but somehow that's just less satisfying.

I honestly think Mason has a point with that scene. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE The Lion King, but Mufasa's death just doesn't manage to put even the slightest frown on my face. It could be because I only watched The Lion King a handful of times as a kid and was never very invested in it, therefore making my emotional connection with it rather weak, but at the same time, Uncle Ben's death in Spider-Man hits me really hard, despite that fact that I never watched that movie EVEN ONCE as a kid, having only seen it for the first time a little less than a year ago. One important thing I should mention though is that I'm a person who rarely, if ever, cries at movies, so that's probably at least partly responsible, but I still think that shows that The Lion King's sad scenes don't really work all the time.

The reaction of Mason to The Lion King just basically shows you how powerful the effect of Nostalgia really is. And not having a heart. Or empathy. Or any basic human emotion.

I like the original Lion King but I don't Love it like so many people seem too. I think aspects of it are super good but also it paces a little weird at times and I agree that simba doesn't always sound very sincere or realistic. And this is coming from someone who worked on the remake haha. So I probably won't even love that either. But we worked dam hard on it so hope people enjoy it!

Mason clearly has heard so much hype for the film for so long he's letting that effect his views on the film. Like you don't have to think it's great but you can at least admit it was well crafted and better than the average animated movie

There is a kind of person who will dismiss something for no better reason than because most of humanity gushes about it. I can get behind Mason here. What I remember about The Lion King is people being over the moon about the "depth" of the animation. That's cool, but the story is nothing special and the music ... well ... it's a matter of taste. The Lion King sucks in much the same way that Avatar sucks ... not because it's bad, but because it's simply not the earth-shattering triumph everyone insisted it was.

I wasn't wild about it either, Mason. You're not alone. Aladdin is the best Disney film. I like the first act, but after that bleh. Other than Rafiki showing Simba "who he is" or whatever I don't care for the rest of the film.
@Movypro235 жыл бұрын
Though it’s my favorite Disney movie, it definitely isn’t without its flaws. The soundtrack and animation are the top reasons to watch, and It’s basically Shakespeare compared to the sequels. (The sega genesis game was a total chore to get through lol)
@plasmasnake47745 жыл бұрын
Blu Watcher your Shakespeare comparison is quite ironic, seeing as how the lion king is Hamlet with lions
@QSqsQSqsQS5 жыл бұрын
Even more ironic that the lion king is Hamlet with lions that was already made in Japan and called Kimba the White Lion 20+ years before it.

I really think this movie is grand, and an absolute spectacle... but I have seen it once and have no plans to return to it. Aside from "Be prepared" I haven't rewatched any particular scenes either. Good movie. Far from a favourite of mine.

The lion king is actually super over rated. It is Fine, but nothing really more than that. Jeremy irons and James Earl Jones are the only standout performances in the entire film.
@lisamortini85674 жыл бұрын
Mason, I like the Lion King well enough. But to make you feel better about not liking it, remember Simba is happily singing "Oh I just can't wait to be king!" and then... his father dies. Simba is a little shit.
