"My mother's memories are not my own": that is a very freeing realization. It can be huge for people who inherit entire households of parents' treasures.
@kennethj19565 жыл бұрын
Sometime we put more way sentimental value into things we inherit because it seems like once the stuff is gone the connection to the relative is gone, like we are disrespecting them. It's all nonsense, but our emotions don't make sense. If our ancestor loved us, they'd want us to be free from the slavery of their possessions.

Absolutely - like the box of “family” photos from my parents. I have no idea who any of these people are. I never met them and have no connection to them whatsoever.
@inckeeper5 жыл бұрын
Yep - very much feeling this. I just helped my parents move out of the house they have lived in for 25 years - I kept saying "but you HAVE to keep this!", but ultimately I had to let them sort through their lives. Especially with family history, its funny how much expectation is placed around certain items - e.g. "I will always have this." or "We can never get rid of this." without understanding why.

I always like going through everything I own and prioritizing what to keep and what no longer serves me. I also like what you said about other people’s sentiments/memories about items not being your own- it’s an important distinction to make when family starts giving you their stuff, and holding on to things out of obligation doesn’t do anyone any good.
@MissVindicat5 жыл бұрын
This is wonderful. I’ve been paying off my student loan aggressively for the last couple of months and as a part of that process I’ve been selling a lot of my stuff. Thank you for the inspiration! 💚

I think the *intention* that it takes to physically select and move what one wants to keep from the large pile is what makes what you did (and loosely Marie Kondo's method) more thorough than other methods. It allows you to rebuild your space with the belongings that you want to fill the space with. I think I will be doing something similar with my closet. It changes the "default" from keep to get-rid-of. I think this is powerful for people who have not previously been that mindful of their belongings and their space.

I have known your channel for approximately one (1) week and it’s already a forever favorite. I really admire how simplistic and funny your videos are, but it still delivers some information; and it isn’t even really an “informational” video, you’re just sharing your life! This is what I love about KZbin. You don’t need a big fancy production to create connections. Those types of large scale videos have a time and a place, but so do softer and more one-on-one videos. These are really helping me put into perspective what else of my own possessions I can minimize. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the move!!! 💕

Moving all the things I have already decided to declutter to a storage unit sounds like a great idea. I could then see if there is even more I could move out and live with out it for a while to see in a month if I miss anything. But a storage unit costs money and their current storage costs in one way or the other. So better to find ways of turning the stuff I want to be rid off into a little cash to help maintain what I really love to keep.

There is nothing more freeing than decluttering before a move. That's probably why I move so much, some would say too much. I've moved 9 times in 9 years, along with travel mixed in. I like the feeling of not being attached to a particular place and having the ability to grow and shrink to whatever space I have. At the moment I have a room and small storage unit, I think it's the perfect amount of room for myself right now. What kind of space are you looking for next? Will you ever consider the nomad life?

We moved from a 2000 sqft townhome to an 800 sqft apartment. We went through a similar process due to the fact that we couldn't just have things lying around. The experience has taught us that there aren't that many things we actually need. "Things we need" included things that made us happy on a day-to-day basis like a coffee maker and things that made us happy when we're down, like a guitar or any other artistic outlet tools. A lot of coffee mugs we collected over the years have been given away. The conclusion I drew from this is that souvenir shops are evil.

Hi there. First of all thank you for sharing so much of your intimacy with us, it's enlightening as well as humbling. In one of your videos (I don't remember which, I just could stop and watched them all) you talked about your humidifier saying that you still have things you need even if you don't like it, for the sake of health, safety or whatever other good reason. And I thought, yes that makes sense, I myself have very bad sleep quality when the room isn't humid enough. But then when thinking about hobbies and what I would like to spend my time on, I thought about someone who would answer something like cooking and baking. It's nice and all but to cook and bake you typically need a (quite high) number of instruments and I don't feel like it fits into minimalism very well. I thought about cooking but DIY hobby needs quite a lot of tools as well, I was wondering how to conciliate the minimalism with these kind of hobbies ? Thank you again, have a nice day.

I used to paint a lot, but I found it troubling how many supplies I needed and how many finished paintings I had just lying around. I guess that's part of the reason I picked up making these videos - you may be able to find the same fulfillment in a related hobby that doesn't require as many physical supplies. I still get the satisfaction of creating something visual without the constant need to go buy more paint and canvases. Hope that helps! 😊

@@Lefie Thanks for the (unbelievably) quick answer. I can say that helps, I can't say how just yet. It's raising more questions... I will figure something out eventually :) I think the way to go is just the way you did it, from how you feel about it (in this case having too many supplies). I have many other steps before thinking about this one :) By the way, I do remember you talking about eating salad, but you did not mention your diet. Do you feel like this is something that should go along ? I know many minimalists are also vegan, or even raw vegan. What do you think about it ?

I don't recall his name but I once saw a man who's a designer/ decorator and he said something like, "I'm not saying your house has to look like Martha Stewart lives there but how about having it so you can find anything you need in three minutes?"---P.S. The loft is full of his stuff and will remain like that until he and his girlfriend live somewhere big enough for it. I love to declutter but when I look around the majority of stuff in the house is either his or my husbands. I’ve decluttered mine and am now happy with what I own and would love there to be less stuff but I have to respect that their stuff is not mine to get rid of. My mother did that with my things and I never forgave her - I still miss my teddy bear. Looking forward to seeing where you end up.
