Decluttering is really difficult because, in essence, you’re trying to predict the future. As you sort through your stuff and think of its purpose, memories, or value, you are thinking of the upcoming days, months, and years and trying to predict the role that each item may have. I find decluttering to be exhausting, and since I cannot even begin to predict the future… I give myself a bit of grace. This is easy for me… because I’m not moving. 💦🌎Ⓜary💕

Oh darling. That is extra hard. I’m sorry y’all are dealing with this and hope you are managing ok right now if things didn’t change (it’s been a week based on your comment). Sending love. I’ve been in that situation nearly a decade ago as a pregnant mom of two (escaping DV for all the nosy folks, the why doesn’t matter as much as the how) and that actually started my minimalism journey. It’s such a different struggle when you’re decluttering from an urgent, stressful and traumatic place. On top of everything else you have to manage. I hate it for you but I also hope some good comes of it. Trusting y’all will be in better circumstances very soon💙

I think that people who don't read books (or not so many books) don't understand the value a physical copy can have.. It's more than just a book, it contains information, changes moods, becomes an escape from reality or gives the perspective of another person's reality. It brings memories, and creates new ones. I love my books, and if I ever would move again I would absolutely take them with me. Thank you for a lovely video, and great thoughts about the stuff we collect and what values the most!💛

Hi Hanna, I want you to know how much I appreciate and relate to your comment. I have a tiny room in my house that is mostly one wall of built in shelving and a small wooden desk. I can lose myself in this room because the shelves are full of books. It gives me such pleasure to randomly pull books off the shelf, sit at the desk, and become totally absorbed in my books… some I have read many times, some are waiting to be read, and the topics are vast and diverse. You and I would most likely have many great conversations about our favourite books. Thanks so much for your awesome comment. I hope you are having a great weekend with a good book on the go. 💦🌎Ⓜary📖

Disclaimer: This is not cheesy advice, hopefully just some inspo…. When big things happen to us in our lives, be it a move, a trip, going off to uni, starting a new job, etc… the event often happens in three phases. The first phase involves the preparation and anticipation, the planning and the excitement. The second phase is the unfolding of the event… the actual moments, days, and weeks finally arrive and along with this comes the joy and indulgence in this highly anticipated time. The third phase comes when the event has passed… the memories, the enrichment, and the experience itself kindles our thoughts and shapes our future. Perhaps the key thing is to savour each phase and to live in the moment, as much as possible. Being present is not always easy… but this preparation, this decluttering and decision making, albeit exhausting, will soon become part of your past Immy. It probably feels like you’ve been stuck in this moment for years, but this moment will pass. This chapter will close and you’ll be on to your next chapter… and best of all, you’ll feel ready to turn that page when the time comes. I hope these words and thoughts are uplifting for you, Immy, and not patronizing. Your journey is a marvel to me and, imho, it really shows your strength of character and the value that you place in people, relationships, and experiences. Thanks for reading… 💦🌎Ⓜary💕

Since about 4 years I am decluttering in order to be able to have a easy move for moving abroad one day. I know that I want to see and live in many countries. I don't miss anything that I have ever decluttered. Nowadays I have everything down to 2 suitcases and 2 backpacks. One or two things might go some day but I take caution to not deprive myself of the thing that make me happy. No matter how much space that take up in my luggage, there are things that I have chosen the best of and I will never let go of (old Sketchbooks/sketches/paintings). Moving is so expensive and stressful if I don't do it on my own, which I am able to do now. Also the decluttering process especially the reselling or more so, the attempt to, make me rethink my consumption, especially if they lose a lot of value.

I've had a phase of watching loads of fashion KZbinrs; with excessive consumption of beauty products, bags, clothes, jewellery , shoes HUGE houses, HUGE cars, HUGE gardens ( which is great but not a prerequisite to happiness) ....was feeling discontented in comparison. Then watched yours and felt so liberated! (Even though you have a beautiful large home too, I mean it's not what you think about all the time, or how you define yourself.) We don't need loads of stuff to be blessed, rich ,happy, free, contented. I already know this, but it's SO easy to forget. The peace from the simplicity and calm in your philosophy is wonderful. Being homeless twice made me a bit of a hoarder. I hit a point last October though and started giving things away. Most of the gifts I gave for Christmas last year were stuff I decluttered. I went through every tote bag box and junk drawer. I didn't have much to begin with after I got new possessions but I got rid of what don't need. I brought my DVD collection down to 5 dvds. I’m not moving but as a student I don’t stay in one place for very long, so although I’m going to be living in my current house for another year, being mindful of what I do have is very important, especially as I tend towards maximalism in many areas. I’ve recently been digitally decluttering - I take so many photos that take up storage and I don’t need all of them. Videos like these, along with growing as a person and learning what I do and don’t value in my life, makes the decluttering process a lot easier and feel less overwhelming.

Watching your video reminded me when I did my big move to the US. I brought two suitcases, that was all. So I completely understand all the emotions you're going through, the questionings, and, I am not sure if you've been through this (because you seem so much more level headed than I was at the time), all the tears! Many times I just couldn't go on, and I would question all of my life choices up to that point. Luckily my mom was there to comfort me. You probably got a lot of feedback already, but I can assure you - of the original two suitcases, I have maybe one left. And it was just of what really, really mattered - family mementos and special books, and maybe one or two t-shirts (that I still wear after 15 years). You'll be ok! Good luck on your journey :)

Thanks for sharing your experience! We were moving from abroad back home again and had the goal to only use one Sprinter and we did it as a family of three (though the little one was only 4 months old when we moved). We got rid of nearly all of our furniture and reduced our stuff we own tremendously. Now the plot twist: we moved into a new place half a year ago but haven't had the chance to open our boxes. The things we thought were invaluable to us turned out to be not used, seen or even missed for half a year now. I am thinking there is an opportunity to reduce again! It's hard to talk to other people about owning not much or wanting to own less because the standard answer is: buy a new shelve. If you move they say: rent a bigger car or get contracters to do it. But that's not what it's about! Owning much reduces your possibilities!

This was a very relatable video for me. My partner (UK) will be moving to the US to live with me after our immigration ppw comes through. We've been together for about 5 years and we're really looking forward to starting our life together. This video helped me understand what he will dealing with when pairing down his belongings to move to the US... I know it will be a heavily weighted responsibility and my ability to help him will be far more limited than I prefer. We've been doing the "suitcase clothing" hack whenever we visit eachother as well so I giggled when you mentioned it 😊 But... all this to say thank you for sharing your journey... both in love & decluttering ❤

This was the kick in the butt I needed to get back to my decluttering and a great reminder that the more stuff I have, that I have to look after and deal with the less time I have for my own self care and the ones I love ie husband and children and my little fur babies

I can relate so much to your situation right now! I've been waiting for a year and a half to join my husband and my immigration process is finally moving ahead. Trying to declutter sustainably so that I don't have too haul things across continents. I find myself needing less and less stuff.

Ah a year and a half!! That's about where we're at too. How are you feeling about the whole process? I've had many ups and downs. A lot of excitement, underwhelming moments, quite a few crying episodes and a calm that whatever will be will be. It's been a roller coaster!

@@SustainablyVegan Its been tough. I would get my hopes up every now and then. There have been periods of extreme frustration and crying too 😅 My visitor visa got rejected once. Since then, a sense of acceptance has set in. I'm doing my best to make the most out of my time here 😊 I don't want to leave with the regret that I couldn't enjoy what I had. I hope you get to be with your partner very soon Immy 🤗.

Got really inspired. I am getting a bit of a problem. I want to move to another city (where my boyfriend lives) but sometimes I get in this trap mind thing that I need this shirt, this book, this little thing and i forget about my main goal. I would love to ear from you on this topic. You really got me inspired ❤️

Hi lovely ❤️ i moved to Australia to be with my partner in 2011 (Im English) and went with a 65l backpack and hand luggage! I stored 2 boxes in my mums attic that I picked up the next time I was back. It’s wild! Letting go of so so much is totally liberating and it set me up for so many delclutters over the last decade as we now live in a self built tiny house (7metres) with our 1 year old little boy! It’s all so liberating but has to be a regularly done! Clutter sneaks in! Xx Bex

Loved the video and the storytelling. Watched it with my sister who's only heard of you and she enjoyed it as well. I appreciated how relaxed and honest the video was, without the normative and deterministic view of an 'extreme declutter' like so many here on youtube. Keep being you, Immy, and best of luck in the move! (from a felow international mover)

So I live in Portland, OR, if you bring your bike to a place like Portland just realize the chances of it being stolen or vandalized are very high. Also something to mention about cities on the west coast( and Portland specifically) the amount of unhoused people is growing dramatically daily, the government doesn’t do anything to help these people, it’s an awful thing to witness, I have volunteered a lot to help the unhoused community, but the issue is massive. The streets are filthy, people literally dying on the street, living in shacks, tents, and campers and the city’s solution is to clear the camps, which results in these people losing everything over and over. I know a man who’s wife died because the city threw out her seizure medication. I’ve lived here for 10 years and it’s so depressing. My family and I are actually waiting on our paperwork to move to Ireland where my MIL lives. Im sorry if this was a downer but it is legitimately so bad here, and it gets worse everyday. And I just want to warn you.

Very beautifully written intro. I've been watching your videos for a few years, and just want to say that I appreciate your perspective! I've moved a lot as an adult and had to pare my physical things down over time, keeping inventory. I also moved to be with my bf a year ago, and now we're considering moving again. It's a lot, esp if you are going far. But good luck with your transition to the U.S.!

My daughter and her husband and 2 children owned a house full of stuff and they sold it all, except each having a carry on and a personal for flying. I have about 5 totes in my basement to hold for them and that is all they own now. They are travelling the world and we’re in London already, now in Scotland. We are Canadian.

I had to move from Kansas to Maine and had already decluttered so much stuff. I ended up leaving everything I loved in a storage unit in Maine, not knowing if I would every see it again. I paid $100.00 a month for two years. I was depressed and heartbroken. Then a miracle happened and I found myself back in Kansas. (Just like Dorothy). I was so happy to have the things I loved so much back.

I moved into a new house with my new boyfriend and our 4 young kids. Not an easy process, but we got rid of 70% of our possessions. We have a small house and each children has his own bedroom (some kids have special needs). We keep it as minimal as we can.

Im from US and moved to UK to be with my long distance relationship. I have been in the UK for the last 2 years and i finally get to know who he really is..... which is not good. Anyway i hope you dont make the same mistake like i did. Once you move to a different country its like you start your life all over again. Im still waiting for my visa to be approved and it's very tough. Stuck in the house and not be able to drive nor work. Maybe move to US isnt as bad as vice versa. Good luck to you. I hope he is the right person for you to make the big sacrifice.
