Nice job on the save there Nate! And a nice explanation. Rob's draw knife work is spectacular. I think most could copy his work but only by taking three times as many smaller cuts and three times the time. For that level of detail when not using a draw knife a lot I think I might chicken out and use a spokeshave. Of course there's that old adage that if one does not try then one does not learn. So there is that attraction to choosing the drawknife even if it means taking longer to get the right results or even to making a mistake and having to start the part over.

Drawknives definitely seem like a rough tool, but after about half an hour, a friend of mine was able to use one was able to use one to finish a butter knife handle and blade to around 1.5mm at the edge tapering to 2.5mm at the spine and a smooth gradual taper up the length of the handle. That was her second time carving anything.

If you saw these rungs and such in person you'd still be of the mind that a draw knife is a roughing tool, because it is. These rungs should be finished with a fine rasp or a file if you're dedicated to doing it by hand.
@michaelmorris18654 ай бұрын
@A_Stereotypical_Heretic I have no problem taking very fine cuts with a drawknife. They're definitely an effective roughing tool, but with practice, they are also capable of finishing work. All in learning when to use it bevel up or down, how to scew it, and your angle of approach.

Looks like a lot of the same sort of techniques I use to make bows. And if you don't have a shave horse, you definitely need one. They're great for both rough and detailed work with a drawknife/spokeshave.

I would like you to show how fast and efficient a seasoned chairmaker would perform those cuts, at full speed. When I took my windsor chair class our instructor showed us both the careful reasoned approach (as you did) and then he knocked out a spindle in 45 seconds (his way). Knowing how fast the process actually is when done by a professional is a real eye opener.

To Rex and anyone else: do you guys know any tap and die set to make wooden screws from China? And how do I find them? Because I'm from Brazil. Those made in the US are REALLY expensive here... And to buy from the US directly the shipping costs are insane as well. 😕

Rex I love your content. But I’m not a huge fan of this particular format for this series. Lord knows I couldn’t do any better so don’t take this as a dig at you. But your normal format that is more planned out with cleaner quicker information delivery is more enjoyable for me. Others may differ and I hope you take this as constructive because again I do like your content.

It does feel like second channel content. Good stuff but it’s not a good entry point for newcomers or it’s just a different vibe.

I like Rob. I like that Rex is experimenting with different kinds of videos. I really want him to do the kinds of videos that he's excited about. But...I don't think I've finished a single video in this series. Idk if it's the pacing, the topic, or what, but it's not for me. I think I've been spoiled by years of A+ scripted stuff from Rex. If it had been 2 to 4 videos, I wouldn't have even said anything. But I'm kinda ready to move on. Hope Rex is too.

@@snteevveetns that would not be good news for Rex. More viewers is better for him. I would like to see him be successful and i believe that providing honest feedback is valuable. That’s the only reason I said anything.

@@JohnWoods-m4c true. But not viewing this type of video but watching the others will still help! Maybe just set your phone to play this while you shower! lol Rex gets the view and you don’t have to watch it! 🤓🤣

I have several chairs like this pegged legs. I am not a fan of this. They fall apart to easily. That's if they are not nailed and or glued in place.

Honestly i'd rather hear echo from the walls than this armpit sound filter. The quick jump from absolute zero to any level of sound wears your ears down pretty quick, especially in headphones. It's not like you have a radio playing 24/7, and this is not your typical high-quality set

3 minutes in, still no mention of the "one part." another channel heading down the clickbait drain.
@taiyoqun5 ай бұрын
I counted 45 seconds until it was mentioned. In case you still don't know what that part is, it's literally highlighted on the thumbnail, along with two arrows in case you missed the first arrow. It's the back posts. It's about the back posts. Just because it wasn't said, out loud, "THIS IS THE PART, THE PART WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT. THE IMPORTANT PART GUYS, CHECK IT OUT. ISN'T IT CRAZY? THAT'S COOL RIGHT? IT'S THE PART EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON." doesn't mean the video isn't about the title. Listen, no hate here, I love you, I value you, I can see you have a complaint and I don't mean to belittle you for having an opinion. But if you still don't get that this is a video about making the back posts, you shouldn't be in the workshop without adult supervision
@joshuaizly55025 ай бұрын
Can you really not guess after watching the first 3 minutes? Start from here 0:43 and try to count on how many parts of the chair they are working on until the end of the video. I am sure you will be able to guess which one is the most important since there is only one part.
