I'm ukrainian. Recently I watched this movie for the second time, and I was crying like a girl. How many destinies were broken, and how many new tragic stories will be telling in future. Humanity doesn't learn lessons of past.

The movie was filmed close to my hometown in the Northbohemian region between Most and Žatec, Czech Republic. With my father, we have visited the place, where the filmmakers built the house in sunflower field. People did not know, for which movie was it built and they were thinking at the time that it is going to be a Harry Potter movie:-D

@pinefrostandsunlight182010 ай бұрын
The song in the second half of the trailer is Devotchka's "How It Ends." (And by the way Devotchka is AMAZING, one of my other favorite songs of theirs is "Enemy Guns.") However, the official soundtrack for this whole film is all great and is worth a listen if you can find it. (If you can't find the full soundtrack, at least check out Gogol Bordello if you haven't already)

@johneqwest4 жыл бұрын
It is a fantastic film, but hard to categorize - and probably hard to "sell" in a trailer. It's hard to portray in snippets - you have to watch the whole movie to feel it, and to see that everything is illuminated.

I watched this movie years ago while in the US and never thought anything about it. I did not know about the persecution that happened there. I just found out about the pograms that used to take place in the Soviet times in this country and now more than ever realize what this movie was trying to say. Sometimes. Not always. The errors of the past become the dramas of the present. That is what is going on. I think the Bible Belt of Eastern Europe is under attack and it is precisely because of losses and gains. Russia is not secure enough to provide life giving fossil fuels for the west and hiding in the east only adds to the tension. I understand why money cannot provide happiness.

This is film is actually fairly racist and insulting towards Ukrainian culture. Maybe now that people learn more about Ukraine, they'll realize it.
@keif4now Жыл бұрын
that bs, it honestly side steps the fact that ukrainians were killing jews along with the nazis and blames the germans entirely.. it deals with only tip of the iceberg of ukrainian anti semitisim. They also consantly say "kike" in russian, but by the end of the movie you have no doubts that it's not anti semitic. If anything, I think it's actually fairly pro-ukrainian.

Another "let's make fun of Eastern Europeans" movie. Repugnant. And look at who quirky and intelectual everything is! It even has surrealism and indie music with lo-fi hipsters sounding sad. This surely must make me inspire me to climb the social ladder. So upper class! Insufferable. Another movie where NY rich intellectuals look down on normal people are snobby normal people think project themselves into the protagonist not realising the author looks down on them. Hilarious.
