This movie you can look at her mom from Lady Bird's perspective and be like, "Yeah, she's very harsh and unsupportive" and you can look at Lady Bird and be like, "Yeah, she is pretty selfish and immature." At the same time, both of these characters are treated with such love and compassion. Of course Lady Bird is wonderful and interesting and needs space to grow. And of course her mom is suffering under a complete burden and is trying to prepare her daughter for the real world. It's a both/and kind of movie, which is so rare, especially regarding women.

@@hardcandy9880 But our best version is our best version today. Maybe we seemed better before, but our best version then is gone and no longer exists. The best version is also useful, not just a memory but a useful memory. Not just an ideal but a reality. Feel free to look up Barbara Eden, the actress who played Jeannie in I Dream of Jeannie. At 88, she seems very beautiful and a wonderful lady. She may have been more beautiful on the show, but it's difficult to imagine a better version of her current self.

I think it’s a bullshit excuse to feel sorry for yourself. Everybody has constant potential and room for improvement.
@NiteCyper
@NiteCyper 5 жыл бұрын
You're both right. I'm just replying to JESSE D with this comment. "To feel sorry for yourself" attracts social support which is a key factor in healthy outcomes. I don't mean to assert that to feel sorry for yourself is itself healthy; I am aware of its association with self-defeatism and depression. But arguably it's this sympathy-garnering aspect that made you comment in the first place: QED. What I wonder most is what you, JESSE D, say after you tell someone your belief. >Everybody has constant potential and room for improvement. This is a great mindset... applied correctly. This is crucial. Does this belief (A) manifest as high expectations where you find yourself constantly judging people negatively and focusing on flaws or (B) is it implicit in your actions, in how you actually help others to improve, seeing the best in people, and praising positive traits? In other words how do you practise what you preach?
@jessed1586
@jessed1586 5 жыл бұрын
I think there’s a tangible difference in self pity ( especially when it’s about some bogus statement that’s not true, because you can improve yourself! ) and trying to impart a helpful suggestion or opinion. I partially disagree with your conclusion that feeling sorry for yourself is meant to draw “social support”. Definitely it can be and might be for the most part, it’s hard to really say what the percentages of peoples motivations are. But often I believe another big reason is that people like the feeling of feeling sorry for themselves and the reasons could be multi variants from teenage brains, to not wanting to accept responsibility, to I don’t even know what. I believe another reason is because it can even be pleasurable. Just like how people find pleasure in holding grudges, or how people find pleasure in beating someone down with snarky condescending words. I don’t believe it’s safe to use your feelings as ultimate indicators of truth, because often they can have negative consequences like you said. Actions and logic is what matters primarily to be a compass. So that’s my main point and belief, and to say things that other people may not like to hear because it’s a hard pill to swallow. I don’t want to just say the overused cliche words as encouragement to blow wind up someones skirt and have it be a temporary “fix”. The OP and others similarly MIGHT “feel” that they’re only so good, but feelings are sometimes deceptive and untrue, just like the phrase "what if this is my best version". It’s a shame that young impressionable people take this to heart. To the last part of your comment: it sometimes is a.) , I recognize that, but I struggle to make it b.) like I think most decent people do.

JESSE D yes. Everybody does have room for improvement. But when you are at a certain point of your life. When you feel you've hit rock bottom. Not everyone can believe they still have room for improvement. Not everyone could see the light at the other side of the tunnel. And sometimes there is that one person that may think, maybe this is the best i could be. Maybe this is what all i could amount to. I guess this is an example of that statement. Its not a sorry excuse. But rather an effect or consequence of all the person has gone through.
@jessed1586
@jessed1586 5 жыл бұрын
But it’s bullshit because it’s a not true statement. Hyper emotional jargon is irrelevant. I’ve hit rock bottom too. It sucks, but I always knew I wasn’t the best version of myself I could be. Its a shame young impressionable people see this statement and reflect on it as having value, being edgy or having any sort of redeeming value. It’s doesnt it’s a lie and a false statement.

I could also relate to this movie. It reminded me of my past as a teenager now when I'm in my twenties. It reminded me how as a teenager you just feel more, whether it's good or bad you're just more emotional. Her mother talked to her the same way mine did. It's heartbreaking, especially with the words like we've done so much for you, gave so much to you, it's never enough, do you know how much you cost us, I don't think you'll ever be able to make that kind of money. You're not supposed to speak to your child like that. They didn't ask to be born.

I love this movie. It's a bit overhyped but it explored so many things, not only focusing on Lady Bird's character development. Her relationship with her mom made me sentimental to mine. It teaches how love is not just merely a feeling, and can come in a form of attention- as simple as that.

I just watched this movie and I loved it. As others said, the characters are so relatable and Laurie Metcalf is brilliant. I also love how the character of Lady Bird isn't a perfect character either... we see her being immature and making mistakes. I love that the film allows us to see the positive and negative in both her and her mother without demonizing either one over the other. There's also a scene in the alley behind the coffee shop with Lady Bird and Danny (Lucas Hedges). If you've seen the movie then you know what I'm talking about. That moment was unexpectedly heartfelt and poignant. Great movie.

saw this a month ago and it instantly became one of my all-time favorite films. The line that just broke me: "Hey, Mom, did you feel emotional the first time that you drove in Sacramento? I did and I wanted to tell you, but we weren't really talking when it happened. All those bends I've known my whole life, and stores, and the whole thing. But I wanted to tell you I love you. Thank you, I'm... thank you." As a high school senior, I can relate to this so much. The uncertainty of the future, the little moments you don't realize were special until they're over. Lady Bird see's the beauty in life and I want to always have that mindset. This film is like no other and is close to my heart.

This is a very bright, quirky trailer, and it's well edited, but it misses the tone of the movie completely IMO... I hug my mom instantly just after i watch this movie. Lady bird plot has a unique value of mother and daughter relationship. We kinda admit it that with our mom, everything is meant to be honest.

Oswell Music The City Of Ember was trash IMO, it's disrespectful as a book adaptation and below-average as a stand alone movie.

lol Saoirse Ronan and Lucas Hedges have both been nominated for Oscars under the age of 22 (Saoirse was actually nominated twice, once when she was 13, and again at 21) and their "shitty movies" such as Brooklyn and Manchester by the Sea have actually been nominated for Best Picture at pretty much every movie award show there is lol CHECK YA SELF

This movie also represents how we are not grateful for what we have and always seek for more until we are never satisfied with what we have... By the time Cristine reaches NY she starts missing her home and family and realises how she was ungrateful throughout her life...

Xcuze Excuse me. Both are talented. But now Jennifer is so stupid choosing roles. However Saoirse is more clever choosing roles that shows her amazing talent. Jennifer is wasting her time chosing crappy bluckbuster movies.
