Lack of sunshine this spring has made everything leggy and slow growing. I grow in my conservatory, which has a glass roof so plenty of light. Tomatoes, sunflowers, even my basil, is all leggy, so it's no use error. We've got some sunshine here today (Monday) so I'm going to get as much done as I can. There's still a very cold wind, though, which is keeping temperature down. I hope this is a sign that we're due a lovely, long summer! 🤞🏻 for the record, I have my chillies and aubergines in SilverGrow and they're doing fine. I did amend with blood, fish and bone, but I've not had the problems Tony is having. 😬

Hi JB, I haven't really had any problems with sylvagrow, my squash and melon seeds have all germinated very well, French beans are well on the way too. I was away for most of March and when I got back it still felt late February, April was like March. On the plus side weed growth seems to have been equally slow so I've managed to catch up slightly on preparing the flower bed today. In fairness my germination and ongoing growth has been great using J Arthur Bowers compost, which definitely needs sieving, but temps have been so low I've had to provide heat in the greenhouse for the last week with a fan heater to keep the tomatoes alive. Normally at worst a heatmat does the trick. Really great to watch your video for a reality check and confirmation that this has been a tricky start to the year 😁

Ah JB, yes I hit exactly the same feelings these last few days. I'm in the same area as you and the germination and growth has been very sporadic this year. I do think the particular low light we have had this entire spring and the unusually cold April temperatures have stalled things quite a bit, especially those pretty harsh night temperatures. Tomatoes germinated but have stayed the same size for a few weeks now. After all the prep work it can make one feel a bit dispirited. However, I can see the forecast is suggesting and return to more average temperatures overall so I'm hoping to see a spurt of growth that's echoed by a growth of enthusiasm!

I can’t get hold of sylvagrow compost but I’m trying a lot of other peat frees and they’re really just not doing the job - pre the mad Covid outdoors gardening and I think looming simultaneous peat ban I don’t remember having much of a problem. I’m not proud of myself, but a lot of precious plants have gone into compost with peat in. This, in my head, is to understand what good growth really looks like so I can strive to do better - my plants have thrived 😞. That said, old seed that I’ve mistreated and left in the sun etc has not done nearly as well. My goal is to make my own compost that doesn’t have a million seeds in it so I’m seriously considering a wormery for the ‘black gold’ that can be added to. And my abomination of chuck it on pallet bay compost bins will be changed. How did people not so many years ago produce the crops, before bagged compost became a thing? We can do it without them 😂

With those pot dividers, are you saying that you grow each chili pepper to full size in a 3L pot? That’s less than a gallon. Most people say to grow them in 3-5 gallon (12-20L) pots, which I personally think is overkill, but 1 gallon is pretty small.
@JBNat9 ай бұрын
No not to full size in those! Just as an intermediate potting stage. Are you in the US? In the UK it is very challenging to grow them in anything more than a 10L pot because of our weather. I recommend 7.5 to 12L as a rule :)

It's just the cold temps JB, the purple tinge on a lot of stuff is a K deficiency, transport of K is temp dependant, it also makes plants produce Anthrocyanins as a protective which are also purple, it's part of the plant immune system, which will be exacerbated by chemical ferts (fortified composts) which reduce soil biota diversity that is needed for full protien sysnthesis (see john Kempfs plant health pyramid). Temps are really normal for this time of year, it's just that we've got used to a few years of warmer springs.

it's still very cold. At the house things are fine at the allotment, which is more exposed and flat (no houses to shield things) there was frost damage just yesterday! all the figs, grapes and what not have been affected, blossom setting fruit etc, it's too cold, that's why tomatoes are purpling, they can't metabolize the phospour just yet, but they will be fine once it warms up.I think it's the false Spring we had in March and people get excited. glass greenhouse also gets cold at night, it gives some protection but only a few degrees. it all comes with the job and yes those were carrots germinating, so well done

I used Levingtons left over from last year for my peppers, onions and flowers. Poorish germination on onions but they’ve been in the ground for around 5 weeks now under fleece and doing very well. Then I used Erin’s compost (on offer) and had good germination. I do use ambient temperature watering. Started feeding all seedlings with extremely diluted seaweed fertilizer as soon as the first ones got a true leaf. Greenhouse seedlings not leggy which is surprising because the Perspex has dimmed. Charles D did say that the organic compost from Melcourt seemed ok. But not the basic one. Maybe they got the chemical fertilizer wrong in the basic SG…? Apart from the onions and early transplanted broccoli which are powering away, all my other transplants in main beds transplanted two weeks have been slow at best. Put it down to weather being pretty cold, damp, windy and dull. Love your pea structures. I feel you re peppers in the house. I’ve only just potted on mine. Kept them stunted because needed room for tomatoes etc. Sowed first beetroot, carrot and spring onions in ground. All germinated but not really doing well in this weather. Hope this helps for comparison. You could try diverting the badgers away from your beds and paths by burying sweetcorn in your hot compost bin. Leave the top off and let the badgers turn the contents over for you. 😃. Thank you for providing content despite feeling a bit low. Hope you had a better day today relaxing at home with sweet Jess.

My seedlings are the same! Probably about 5 weeks behind where I was last year. 1st sowing of peas all gone? Mice? But 2nd sowing doing well, but still only 1” tall! My sunflowers are so leggy, should I re-sow? Brassicas like yours, just not growing -yet! And no carrots despite sowing them in different ways, hoping for something, anything!Actually I’m quite pleased to see that it’s just not my inability, can only put it down to the continual cold and rain😢

The only time that my tomato plants went purple (last year ) was when they were lacking in nutrients ..a few days after potting them on in fresh compost the turned green and healthy again .I'm bursting to tell someone ! ..my boy has a serious mental health condition and this year I've got him into gardening ...he's 44 .well he's sowed beetroot cabbage peas French beans and sweetcorn he's also planted a tree and a strawberry basket and guess what ? Today he had his first taste of his own home grown strawberry ..he couldn't get over the taste and oh he was oh so proud ...mental health and gardening eh ..try giving your seedlings a feed

Thanks for your video, we all have good and bad times in the garden, glad you’ve shown it…..I don’t feel so bad now! It feels like we are all a month behind. The weather is up and down, light levels very low, we can’t do a thing about it I’m afraid! I still doubt the compost, I’ve eventually bought some, but I’m not impressed as it’s got mould in it…..not good for our lungs…..also smells chemically! Could someone please convince me that the ordinary Sylvagrow is good! Have some time to rest. Thanks

We are getting huge fluctuations between the day and night time at the moment. I know greenhouses get warm but 35° for brief periods during the day, when the sun is out, followed by 2° at night is a huge stress factor I’m sure. My sunflowers look similar and have been bending towards the light . But what light I’m also unsure of on the top shelf in a greenhouse, I’ve had a lot of stuff germinate fine but then stall. I know we’ve conversed about it previously. I can’t say for certain if it’s the weather or that compost but my plants certainly took off once potted in to another brand. Could have been coincidence. Feel a bit sad for them if we’re all blaming the compost when it could be in combination with the weather.

Yes the comments on this one have been so reassuring!

@@JBNat yes, I agree. I have had excellent root structure with all of my plants in it, just slow foliage. They’ve been pretty healthy looking on the whole. Just stunted, a bit like me 😂 Hope you feel a bit less stressed now
