I have this kind of addiction, where I tend to buy games I don't play (of course most of these are retro games, rarely do I buy a new game anymore), and this has spilled over into online courses, I couldn't resist buying the course -- even though I don't know if I've ever seen a video of yours. Hopefully I will be able to go through it. In any case, even though I'm not looking to build my own game that's a survival game, where you build stuff, and being open world, I figure if I learned how to do all of that, I could probably build virtually any kind of game in unreal engine that I wanted to. (I've had an idea for a single-player story-driven fps for years, and think I might could actually start developing it)

@@Uhfgood I purchased the course about ~2 months ago and it's definitely what I was looking for: build a complete game from scratch that I can play around with as a learning experience without hunting down 1400 YT videos. I have also purchased other courses that promised a lot and delivered less than YT, and this is not that kind of course. The course is similar to any college course: you get out what you put in, and sometimes you have to go outside the course if you want to grow. By the end of the course you'll have a working multiplayer survival craft project like Ark Survival Evolved if you just follow along. 10/10 stars as a whole, but nothing is perfect. To make up for that, there's comments under each lesson that might help if you're stuck, and then the Discord has live support from other game developers for more complex issues. I 100% recommend the course if you're familiar with programming; ask yourself: what is the purpose of an enumeration, what is an abstract class, what is inheritance? If you know the answer, you're ready for the course without any problems. If you don't know how to program already, it may be more difficult to modify interactions to suit your needs at first, but you can literally just follow along and get a working project without understanding the big picture. If you decide to get the course, I'd recommend just following along to the end even though the game is not exactly what you're looking for, and then using what you've learned to make what you have in mind. The overall concepts will be the same.

Epic is honestly genius for how much of the game development pipeline is slowly being added to UE5. The more your pipeline uses UE5 the more you are "trapped" within the ecosystem. If your modelling, rigging, texturing, etc. is all within UE5 it will be very hard to move away from it.

Someday we will finally be able to modeling, rigging, texturing and animate a full 3D model inside Unreal Engine, without being forced to go through Blender or other 3D Modeling engine. I love using Blender, but exporting an animated and complex 3D Model from Blender to Unreal Engine 5 has always been a pain to me (A lot of glitches and unexpecting results) and I just wish Unreal Engine will contain a full 3D Modeling engine inside it.

They had pretty fast version up during the early days of UE4 as well, it didn't really slow down until maybe about 4.8? Then it picked up speed again around the 12~20. I don't expect them to slow down if they are pushing for more usable nanite/lumen/world partition combination. Substrate and PCG probably won't really be in beta until like maybe another year worth of development. I wonder if they can support actual spherical landscape for planet size(ie. you specify planet radius, then specify the area you want to create landscape on) with LWC, cause that was what the existing volume atmosphere + cloud was built on. Exciting future indeed, we won't have enough time to populate fun content on that huge world we can procedural generate. But to make the scale believable isn't that far fetched now. (seamless planet travel would be possible with LWC without visual tricks for loading.)

I know cinematics isn't the focus of this channel, but I do learn a lot from you so am hoping you could help me. I use Unreal Engine for cinematic purposes. And traditionally if you wanted to make a slight adjustment to an animation in your scene, like lets say move the hand to align perfectly with something, you'd simply right click your character in the sequencer, edit with FK Rig, add an additive layer, and keyframe the first frame of the additive layer and you could make your adjustments. That has been how it's been done since UE4. But now in Unreal Engine 5.3, that is no longer the case. I can't find any information on this subject, let alone that they made this change. Could you help me with this?

It seems like the majority of improvements are geared towards making Nanite and Pathtracer more compatible with all of the other systems they have added and improving interoperability. As far as I'm aware DX12 is a requirement for Nanite and Lumen because DX11 just simply doesn't have the features that would allow those systems to function. It seems they're making strides in Apple silicon support, but I honestly wouldn't hold my breath for DX11 support any time soon or if ever.

What comes close to this is Blender 2.62 as they removed the game engine ins 2.62a. Right now the version you see on the front page for Blender is 3.6.1 and the game engine add-on might or might not work with it. Unreal engine 5.3 is much better for making games as it is the focus of Unreal Engine while Blender is much better at making meshs, shaders, and rigging. The rest that they both do is subjective to the user. The pipeline for many has been make and rig in Blender than export into fbx then import into Unreal Engine. It does bake the procedurally made node output into a material to be an image instead of procedural generation but that is normal in optimization anyways.

UE5 is absolutely great for experimenting and seeing what the future holds, however every game developer I know who is working on a game to be published in about a year from today is developing their game in UE4. Because simply Nanite, Lumen, and the overall complexity and unoptimization of UE5 just isn't ready for the current hardware that most people have. Not to mention that the quality of the Lumen is absolutely poor compared to the quality of the baked light - especially indoors, the Lumen looks terrible, not to mention the various flickering and artifacts that Epic has known about since UE5 Early Access and still hasn't been able to fix. Of course, Lumen has dynamic lighting and that's an undeniable advantage over baked. And about Nanite - you don't need it if you're willing to model honest low poly models and bake normal maps.

100%, but it's always the same, new version, new hype, new bugs (will be ignored ofc). The most "devs" just go with every new update (even experimental) without spending even minutes to test everything out. Then a few weeks later they cry in the forums because something isn't working, but they put already "so much" work in their project, there is no way back. Stick with UE4 until UE5 is stable and is as performant as UE4. You can always upgrade, but never downgrade. I always tell people but they don't care. See Satisfactory, they thought upgrading to UE5 would be a good idea and guess what? Worse graphics and half FPS compared to the UE4 version.

Agreed. However, I'm in UE 5.0.3 and I haven't migrated up since. No nanite for me. I've managed to work around Lumen by manually adjusting global illumination for every interior I have, which is a hassle, but the having to learn the advanced input and other things are putting me off from the later engines. Beautiful stuff, but I'm publishing my game this year in 5.0.

@@V-A-N-G-U-A-R-D The benefit of Enhanced Input is it is an asset now, meaning when I switch projects or get a Market project - I dont have to remake all my named Actions (that are in my real project). Since now I could just copy (Migrate) and IA asset to the new project. (In 4x, there's an old way to hax INI files and copy Named Actions to the INI of the new project. But it's slower.) Also the new Input Trigger nodes have better conditions for Hold key, etc. [watch?v=nXJuXUxQfa8] RE Lumen. Everytime I load UE5.1 it asks me to install the new DirectX. And I dont want to install anything new (that may change my system). So I cant even benefit from Lumen atm. But I want 5x for the new AnimBP nodes that blend anims.

Hi, do you think that a survival game like ARK can only be created using a blueprint? I'm a beginner, but I don't think so because the blueprint isn't really good when the game contains a lot of physics and complicated ai. I also don't know if it would be suitable for a multiplayer game. Can someone tell me what are the boundaries of the blueprint? Chat-gpt told me that bp is more suitable for prototypes and not for complete games. But they can create smaller, undemanding games

The whole “blueprint is for prototyping” thing is pretty much nonsense. I prefer C++ myself because it’s way more organized and flexible, but there’s no reason you can’t find a way to make whatever you want in blueprint. It truly comes down to how you prefer to work

@@joshmiller5374 I'm trying to make a horror game... where there will be mechanics: press these letters to open a gate for example. Then I wait for a vision (hallucination) to appear at certain moments and then find fuel and add it to the generator. I don't know if it is very difficult for BP... but it will probably be difficult to create.

@@xaby996 Well, I know that everything can be done using BP, but the game will probably have a performance problem 😭

I tried importing 32K of landscape. Failed. Not sure the importing very large landscapes is in this preview. It shows the feature greyed out in the roadmap while others were in color. Going to be upgrading the RAM from 128 to 256 GB.

was it a single heightmap or tiled?

If you have 1px per m² your next error message will be "not enough vram" when importing the heightmap. Hopefully these problems are gone with the new update. Imagine to fill a map with pcg on 100x100km² with an RTX3060 running smooth.

All nice features. Would be nice have a version where they focus exclusively with all bugs that make sometimes your workflow a nightmare. Also a better way to manage UI with more personalization would allow to have a faster user experience. Wouldn't require great effort in programming.
