A rant. A tangent. 7 things that bothered me about the 1080 V13 after about 67 miles in the shoe. I am not sure I will make it to 100. I might have had enough.
DIsclaimer: I say this in the vicdoe but I love New Balance shoes. I loved the Rebel V3 and SC Trainer, two of my favorite shoes in 2022 and 2023. I loved the SC Elite V3 and number 4 is in the mail. I wanted this shoe to be good. I want all shoe to be good. But I have to be honest and I am a bit of a clown so here are my honest silly thoughts.

Overall, my experience with the 1080 V13 is nearly indentical to yours. It is the only shoe, the only shoe, I have ever run in that gave me hot spots. Something about the toe box doesn't work for me. I ran in it 6 times and had discomort each time. I then relegated it to a walking shoe. I enjoy it as a walking shoe at least, but don't really need a dedicated walking shoe. With that said, it may certainly work for some runners who are searching for a highly cushioned, very soft recovery day type shoe. Always enjoy the content!

Thank you for validating my experience: I needed a new daily trainer that could suffice for long runs as well. I’ve always hated the very soft marshmallow-y sink-in shoes, many of which are very high stack to make matters worse. So when the 1080 13 got so hyped up I was mainly focused on the talk about bounciness. I went into my favorite running store (as I always do when in San Diego) expecting to come out with the 1080’s. Instead, I left with the Brooks Ghost Max. I far prefer it EVA foam to the 1080, which made me feel like I was slogging (working harder). I’ll like it even more in v2 which will have a softer formula of their super critical foam used in the Hyperion Max. The roll geometry also happens to work well for me. It’s not a race shoe but my LR’s are going better in it than they were in the Asics Nimbus 25 as well. But the Hyp Max is more nimble and sleek and feels lighter.

@MidLifeRunner
@MidLifeRunner 5 ай бұрын
They may or may not be too soft for 12 hour shifts and my foot sweats. I personally like the Hoka bondi 7 for walking because the top layer/insole is very soft but outsole A) has a little bit of a wider platform and b) the EVA foam is a little more dense, which I find supportive and more durable

The imagery you created in my head 😆😆😆 I’m dreaming of running on a beach, except the beach is actually dirty cat litter and the cat left it’s blessing in the shoe before I started running in it. Its funny...im still a very novice runner(43minute 5k..and not doing 5k so often).. I find the way the shoes absorb my strike very soothing....my running seems comfortable and it's easier for me to find a pace and just "cruise"...it sounds strange but they feel comforting and the squish has a very satisfying feel...like when you play with a tactile fidget toy(it stimulates your senses)...im not thinking about speed at all here..... I also have the SC Trainers v1 and I find them harder to find the right stride and tempo with...they seem so agressive and busy(I might just need to run with the more)... However im still a very slow runner that is still building up fitness so speed is not my concern..
@EricS-uf9mv
@EricS-uf9mv 5 ай бұрын
There is always a tradeoff between cushioning and energy return/efficiency. As cushioning increases, efficiency decreases. Sure a highly cushioned shoe might feel "soothing", but it's also robbing a TON of energy from your stride... energy you're now wasting overcoming the braking force of the foam (ie.. 'climbing out' of the shoe) instead of devoting that energy towards forward velocity. There's a reason why sprinter spikes are extremely rigid & low stack... so as to lose as little kinetic energy as possible. Even middle distance super spikes have like 1/3rd the stack height normal road racing shoes. Bc regardless of mechanical assist devices & super foams used in the newest spikes, more cushioning always results in reduced efficiency.
@MidLifeRunner
@MidLifeRunner 5 ай бұрын
thanks for sharing! The SC trainer v1 foam is more dense and bounces back. That shoe, the Nike Invincible, and the Prime x Strung to a degree are all "hybrid" shoes, in my opinion. They can go so but can also "bounce" right back the more you put into them. So, the advantage of having a 1080 v13 is that it prevents you from trying to go faster, even if you're feeling particularly frisky on a day. It is also possible that I need a little more support and that is provided by more dense foam. In the SC Trainer v2, the foam is softer than the v1 so it's a different ride. There's also less stack under foot, so there's less bounce back. I am finding I prefer the bounce back

You may like the Brooks Ghost Max-especially the upcoming v2 which will have a softer and of course thicker version of its super critical nitrogen infused midsole than the Hyperion Max (which I already love). I even recommend the 1st Ghost Max which is doing fine for my LR’s even with its EVA midsole. The roll geometry is great.

For me (a big guy with bad feet who’s wearing these casually) the only issue is I feel like there is a touch of variance in size. I’m a US13 in a 2e width - I have 4 pairs and I’m convinced there’s a touch of difference in sizing. Mainly the upper. It’s not enough to switch sizes or anything - just an observation. I have bad feet though so 🤷‍♂️ I have seen a couple people say similar. I feel like my all white colour is a touch more roomy. For a big guy like me though walking in these - perfect. Yeah I can see running in these not being the best pick

You didn't watch the reviews before buying? Some people love these and some hate them but I'm going to watch a fair number of reviews before spending $165 on shoes. They're max cushion shoes for slow, easy runs where you don't care about how long it takes you to get where you're going. Also, wait until Black Friday to buy shoes. I got a pair of these for $122 at Public Lands on the week of Black Friday, I haven't seen them discounted like this anywhere else but they will be probably down to $100 November 2024. The supply and demand of the 1080v13 seems to be such that New Balance isn't having any trouble selling them at $165.

My 1080 v13 is ok, but it was too expensive for a flat tire cushioning, low durability outsole, and amazingly unstable for an average height of cushioning shoes. But I was disappointed when people were comparing it with the Nova Blast 3&4 .... the difference is that the Nova is actually bouncy while the 1080v13 is a slow running shoes ,unfortunately ,besides its very slow weight for high cushioning shoes. Anyways, I expect that both 880 v14 and More v5 will be better bouncy, non flat tired cushioning, and much more stable neutral shoes.

However there are a lot of influencers out there at present that we both admire and follow which are trying to tell us about the emperor's new shoes (cielo x cough) .. so beauty in the eye of the beholder I guess 😁

😂 everyone got that shoe for the big release. It’s just as ugly as the alphafly but if it helped me run just as fast, I would totally wear them. Not in public for casual wear but absolutely at a race

Yah know what, just for this review, I'mma gonna go git me a pair TODAY! Why? 1. To prove that maybe you are right and they WILL make me run slower. Like, in my REAL Zone 2 (thanks Garmin). Plus, how much slower can I really run anyways? 2.To prove to myself that I was SO So so wrong buying those CloudEclipse's several weeks ago. What was I thinking? Could this be any more of a train wreck? Boredom and 43+ years running will do that I guess 🤷 Oh well, there's always my Vibram Five Fingers, the dreadmill and my gazillion pairs of half broken in Altras...

Stepping into cat litter lol lol Most of them were how I felt when I bought 1080 V12. At least I liked design of V12 (NOT 13). By the way, Andrew you FORGOT 8.25% tax on top of $165.

Forgot the tax and to include #7! I've heard the same about v12. I tried the More V3 but it was too wide or big under foot so I sent them back. I've got the SC Elite 4 coming in tomorrow but I have heard it's "just a super shoe" - definitely not going to be on the hook for Alphafly money if it's no the Alphafly. We all grieve differently, I suppose

Not everybody is in fantastic shape in their 20s and running super fast. There are super shoes for that. The 1080 is not going to be the alphafly. 1080 is for a different group of people. If the 1080 might not be good for what you are looking for, it does not mean that it’s not good for others. I own all the super shoes out there but I still love the 1080 v13 for what it was created for.

I wanted it for easy runs as a soft shoe . It’s too soft for me for it’s intended purpose. That’s for me. I also note when shoes fit too tight or to loose for my size- it doesn’t mean it will for you. But just to be mindful of it. I would prefer any $165 dollar shoe works for the buyer but alas, this one does not for me, which is why I made the video

I agree with you that these shoes are ugly af, but I LOVE them. However, I bought them solely for easy runs the day after a long run or whenever my old man legs are screaming. They're like boring little pillows underfoot but sometimes that's what I need. Outside of marathon training it's hard to justify $165 for a shoe I wear one day a week though.

hmm…the last thing I want or need when my legs are screaming is a shoe that makes every step feel more arduous. The only very soft shoe I have for days like that is the ON Cloudsurfer. It’s just a soft-in fact divinely comfortable-but it has rebound and no sinking in quicksand.
