I bought the standard Kuru Toga a while ago, and when I recently bought a Kuru Toga Advance, I noticed that the Advance spun the same speed as the Standard. I initially thought that the Advance had an issue, but then I realised that the Standard I bought actually had the updated W engine. Comparing my standard to the standard shown here, I've confirmed that my standard has the W engine, even though it's not supposed to. Just something strange i decided to mention here.

Nice video! :^) Just to clearify one minor thing, @01:33, the Kuru Toga mechanism works when the pencil is pointing down. The reason is that when the pencil is pointing up, the mechanism is closed and the rotation cannot take place and advance, when the pencil is pointing down the mechanism opens up and thus it can work, the mechanism is gravity-dependent. But the reason behind it is that there are two gears facing each other, like cerated mountains or teeth facing each other, these teeth or mountain peeks are slanted, when they "bite" they glide slightly in micro incriments in one direction. But they need to open up and "bite" again in order to advance the rotation. If the pencil is pointing up, the "bite" is closed because the two gears are collapsed on each other, but when the pencil is pointing down, when you raise the tip away from the surface the two gears seperate, and when pressed again they bite again and advance in rotation in one direction. Try it again with your fingure tip no problem but with the pencil pointing down. :^) Hope this helps. :o)

Mine works while upside-down down, I have the pipe slide version and my speculation as to why it works upside-down down is that its because it has a very low powered spring just enough to bring the kuru toga engine up and rotate it.

I own a Roulette in Gun Metallic; however, the Advance is my favorite of them all. The upgrade to a metal clip, the wider grip section and lower price point (when compared with the aluminum grip), and the range of body colors makes the Advance more appealing to me. Thanks for the video!

I have the Alpha Gel Kuru Toga and find it works well for printing preventing that sharp edge. When writing in cursive it is not as effective but a slight improvement over a standard design. I wish UNI made a 0.9 version in the Kuru Toga series, I like the smoothness of the larger lead diameter especially for cursive.

I actually enjoyed the smooth aluminium one more, knurling is uncomfortable for me no matter the agressiveness, the ridges provide enough grip and they dont get greasy with my overly greasy hands, which was a complaint of mine for the plastic bodied ones.

Hi -- great review, but several newbie questions for you: 1) Never been crazy about mechanicals because they don't have that fine-honed point that you can get with a graphite pencil. Can you really achieve a point with these? 2) Given the prices of these pens, why not just always go with the top of the line? What's the argument for the entry-level models if the price delta is relatively small? 3) As a matter of practicality, why would the 2x engine be any more desirable than the original. You achieve the same point preservation, right? Does rotation speed really matter? 4)These pens are lauded for their quality and craftsmanship, but with all the plastic, is this true?
@Thermalcool
@Thermalcool 5 жыл бұрын
The 2x speed does help as its better for drawing for example when you draw a long straight line you only lift the pencil up once which turns the mechanism once that's where the 2x speed helps as it turns more compared to the normal speed which allows to to sharpen more effectively

Having the Roulette, Alpha Gel, Rubber Grip, Advanced, and Standard models, I feel like I can answer these questions with accuracy. 1) Due to the engine in these pencils, it is possible to achieve a point similar to that of a perfectly sharpened wooden pencil. However, you would need to write with the Advance or Pipe Slide to keep the point from being asymmetrical. Then, the point would not last long at all if you were to hold the pencil to a 90 degree angle to the paper and were with it like that. But I really don’t think you will need to do this if you want a sharp point because you can get a perfectly precise line with the Advance in 0.3mm. In fact, it is notably finer and clearer than the 0.2mm Orenz’s chisel. If you are not fond of fine lead sizes, don’t write about breakage or smoothness with this pencil due to its rounded lead sleeve. It’s almost as good as the Orenz, and I’m super picky. 2) The argument for the entry level models is very weak. Some people may just prefer to get some extra leads or erasers refills for the same price as a higher-end pencil. Or, the might just not care enough and don’t want to spend anything extra at all. 3) The faster engine keeps a more consistent ideal lead cone. It writes with a slightly thinner line with the same lead size than its slower counter-part. You can also use a softer lead, write in cursive, or just not pick your pencil up as often while achieving the original result. 4) As I mentioned above, I am very picky. And because of this, I completely stopped using all of the Kuru Togas as my main pencil only because of its slight wiggle or sponginess when you push it down to activate the engine. It drives me crazy because the beginnings of my letters start a little bit after I make contact with the page, and the ends end shortly after I release. The end result? Slightly messier but more consistent handwriting. You decide what you want. The plastic on some of these pencils are solid. There is no weird creaking; everything is put well together. I would say to just watch out for the clip on the Pipe Slide and Standard models as they can break easily. The pencils work as advertised, and they work well. Hope this helped!

very nice pencils and a very nice review i have a bunch of them, including the cheapest as well as the roulette and a premium metal one have to say, my favourite is the cheap base model; just something about the grip and the fact that the pencil is perfectly weighted in my hand; others' mileage may vary of course one thing which i think you didn't mention but is worth pointing out - the see through design on some of these allows you to confirm that the rotating mechanism is working correctly; when i first got one i found myself wondering if the lead was indeed rotating; in the see-through versions you can see the kuru toga icon (in white on an orange background) - note its position and then draw a bunch of strokes - you'll see that the icon has moved round somewhat from its original position

I think that's exactly the Kuru Toga's mechanism at work; there really might be a tiny bit of spring when you lift your pencil since it uses your pressure from writing in order to rotate the lead (so that it stays sharp).
