If he didn't make the donation that definitely changes the equation about his motive. But I don't think being registered as a Republican means he really is one. I think if he didn't make the donation, then the registration probably was genuine. But if there was evidence in the other direction such as the donation, it is conceivable that he just registered so he could vote against Trump being the nominee.

So the statement made that his father had this rifle "fully licensed and registered" is not even remotely accurate.
