I hate how facebook is trying to cement a permenent relation between them and the metaverse by calling themselves meta, when the metaverse should be open source and decentralized much like the internet is. If anything the metaverse should be like the next evolution of the internet. just like how we interact with the internet through a screen right now the metaverse should be akin to going into the internet. maybe we should start calling the metaverse the exonet or something to break that association with meta as a company.

Exactly. Decentralization (P2P) is already there and doesn't need blockchain tech. We just need to find a new business model that doesn't rely on virtual scarcity. We can create a better Metaverse that our current universe, let us not reintroduce physical limitations into something we can fully control.

My question is: Do we really need a metaverse? Imho that would be nothing but a fancy lobby. There are people who play VR games alone and there are people who play scoial vr games or vr mmos. Doing exactly that via a metaverse is just adding an extra step. Sure you can have some mini games withing that "meta- lobby" but most likely it will be full of advertisment and opportunities for you to spend extra money. On maybe a fancy viurtual jacket or halloween outfit. Nothing but fluff. On the bright side, if that means facebook spends more money on developing better and cheaper headsets, go for it! Looking forward to upgrading my rift S :)

People completely ignore those parts of the presentation. It’s ok to be skeptical of Facebook, actually PLEASE be skeptical. We have to hold them up to that and ask for even more transparency.
@zengrath3 жыл бұрын
Hah, i don't believe a single word of that, remember when they said all that about Oculus when they took it over? It was all a lie, oculus was supposed to be open, not have exclusive crap, not require you to tie everything to a social media website, etc. Facebook claims they were keeping it as it was and would never implement a requirement to log into facebook to use it, we all see how that turned out. How many more times does Facebook need to screw us over before people stop trusting them. I really keep hoping that everyone will stop using facebook one day, and facebook will shut down. Every time something significant happens I'm like oh good finally this is the thing that will surely reach people and make them realize they need to stop using facebook, only time and time again they remain unphased and keep using it anyway. I stopped using facebook back in 2004 or 2005 because of the bull they pulled back then, and it's nothing compared to recent years.

What we need here is a Tim Berners Lee of the Metaverse, not a Zuck; that is, an standards organisation with industry and public buy-in like the W3C established by Berners Lee that will ensure a equal opportunity for independent developers and the user community so that they can create and flourish.
@zengrath3 жыл бұрын
Wow, this is why I love your channel, you really put a lot of thought and common sense into your videos and reviews. There was so many things i wanted to say at the beginning of this video but you ended up literally saying everything i was thinking. The only thing is I have probably far less confidence in Facebook building this metaverse in the way we hope. And my worry is facebook may end up doing so poorly that other companies will be cared to try it themselves. This type of thing has happened in so many gaming sectors where a particular genre of game has massive potential and doing well then some big company makes a huge investment in a game of that genre and it does so poorly that no one else makes anymore decent games in that genre for years. Example is EA acquiring Maxis, Maxis was my favorite developer growing up, I absolutely loved their games, no one did anything like Maxis, they innovated and created simulation games that just simply didn't exist at the time, ant simulator, simcity, sim tower, and so on. Then one day EA bought them and did so horribly bad with the Sim City 5 game that they basically dismantled Maxis and never looked back, Thank goodness other companies have created good ones since then like Cities XL but it's so sad to see EA just decide, oh i guess people don't like sim city games anymore so we'll just shut it down, completing disregarding the fact that it's because they made a terrible version of the game that isn't at all what people want. They also completely ruined the game Spore, the original design of that game was absolutely amazing, I remember following Will Right original concepts and alpha builds and looking forward so much to that game, then EA forced him to remove all aspects of evolution from an... game about evolution saying they didn't want to upset people of religion but instead made it about creationism too, i guess they don't care about upsetting people who prefer science over religion, sigh. Will Right was so upset over how that game turned out after having EA Ruin it, he quit Maxis at that time and the entire game industry. We lost one of greatest game dev's in history thanks to EA. Facebook i see doing this very same thing, I believe Facebook has been hurting the VR Industry by segmenting the market, marking it a closed platform, integrating it into VR. VR needs more people playing VR to become successful and Dev's are finding making VR games for steam not worth it, as often costs are more then they can hope to make back so we end up with Demo like VR games instead. If all the VR users was in one pool, for example everyone who owned an oculus and vive and so on could all play on all systems without any limitations and play each others platforms games, so i could take my valve index and play on oculus store or oculus users play on steam, i firmly believe VR industry would be in a much better place then it is now. But instead there practices continue to prove they want to be the only VR provider, doing everything in their power to destroy thier competition by throwing an absolute ton of money at it, buying exlusive rights all over and so on, for sole purpose of trying to be the only VR distributer. In the end they are hurting the entire industry and risking the VR industry falling apart and never getting off the ground. They will likely killl the Metaverse idea and delay a real metaverse from happening for another 15-30 years after that because everyone else in the industry will now not want to invest in something that is only going to lose money after they see Facebook fail. Sorry this is way longer then i intended but... you can see why i'm not happy about companies like EA and Facebook, basically ruining the industry. Don't even get me started on how EA is only company allowed to make sports games and such, why i haven't played sports games at all since i was a kid, only one who can make them is EA, i'm talking like Nascar, NFL, NHL, etc.

Thank you, it’s okay when comments are long, I read long comments because they usually have a lot of thought and passion in there. So again thank you! I think back to games like Sim City a lot too, I didn’t know this is what happened. There’s a lot in here that makes me sad too. I’m not sure how we can solve this, we probably can’t except to keep speaking about it and hope it changes something? Facebook has been moving to OpenXR standards which could be a good thing. Let’s hope that’s what they will stick with with everything. Also, thank you for recognizing that I tried my best researching the topic, the video took a long time to make ❤

A set of open standards is needed if this is to go anywhere. Standards are very different to producing an API or a company providing the infrastructure that they can exploit to their advantage. Standards let us make any electrical device we can dream of and plug it into the wall. They let a myriad of phone makers compete for your $$$. The internet is a standard that lets us all plug into it. No one owns these standards although the big $$$ interests certainly try to twist them in their favour. So as a start and a basic if we can get Meta to propose an OPEN interface standard and maybe even fund an independent body to publish and adjudicate this standard. As an idea as in this video, an extension of the current internet standards covering 3d. Then as a developer I have a roadmap of just where to start coding and not have to fear getting locked into one mega provider. There is a lot more to add here like infrastructure computing power (the internet has managed to get around this by have a myriad of suppliers because of standards). Time to get off the soap box :)

@zengrath3 жыл бұрын
The problem with this is that just like VR, segmenting a brand-new thing into all these smaller markets just make it significantly harder to become successful. People tend to join the popular version and even if that popular version is absolute garbage no one wants to switch to a more unpopular one. So this could be a situation in which everyone jumps on Facebook's Meta vers, and everyone who comes after doesn't stand a chance. Or like VR it takes sufficiently longer for decent content to develop because no one finds that they will make enough money back to bother. So many dev's that make VR games or VR modes oof games on steam is leaving and going back to making Pancake games because it's not worth it, there still isn't enough people in VR to be worth the extra development costs associated. If everyone who owned a PSVR, and Oculus, and Vive/Index could play any game on any platform and games were available on all platforms we would likely see far more growth in VR market, as developers would have a significantly larger pool of people buying their games. In the end it seems like ethier the various VR teams need to work together or 1 will end up being the "Main" go to system and i'm afraid with how aggressive facebook is they will be that primary system and in the end the VR industry will become stagnant because facebook isn't the kind of company who does things for the good of the industry or the people, they do it for power and money only, only as a means of figuring out how to sell more of people's information which is the only goal of facebook.

I'm looking forward to small brands and Elon coming out with something that can compete. Apple is going to be proprietary, expensive and all the Apple fans will buy it up because of branding. Amazon devices are generally cheaper ripoffs of actual good devices. The only company you listed that I would give a chance to is Google, their Android software is amazing and actually open source plus based on Linux, their products aren't super over priced and they actually innovate the stuff they come out with unlike Apple and Amazon. We all know Elon would make an amazing successful product if he chose to, I hope he gets into the vr market and beings something that will delete the Facebook based vr from the market, sadly too many people have already jumped into the Facebook bandwagon and will likely support Facebook quest to monopolize the vr market as a whole.

Lots of great points! Well timed, too, as I'm in the middle of writing a blog post about this exact topic :D The only bit I'm not so sure about is throwing in references to "the blockchain" and "NFTs" as being the answers to many of the problems. They might be part of the solution to some issues, but - for example - it's no good being able to prove you own an avatar if the client that's rendering it doesn't care who owns it and will render it anyway. There needs to be interoperability standards that require clients to check the ownership of an avatar before rendering it - preferably in such a way that *not* doing this becomes undesirable (otherwise you'll end up with clients that just don't perform that check so that people with stolen avatars can go hang out with each other without issue). What needs developing now is the equivilent of the Web's HTML, CSS and Javascript - but for persistent 3D environments. Hopefully that's the plan :)
@CasandChary3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, thank you! You’re right, even if it was a NFT, the platform would need to support it by actually doing something with the proof of ownership. I also agree we need some kind of standard for the Metaverse, like HTML has. But I just hope that that standard would include some decentralized tech like the blockchain. Like if we take an avatar ownership proof as an example, I would want it to be publicly verifiable. Not that FB will get all the permission to set the rules and for example, when two people fight over one avatar. I don’t want FB’s backend to be able to say who owns that avatar, but I want us, the people using the platform, being able to verify it ourselves on the blockchain. E.g. we can look back and see who actually created the avatar. I hope Mark will consider it instead as they have moved to openXR too 🤞🏼 Let me know if I don’t make sense at all, I want to learn :) EDIT: Just to be clear, I 100% agree with what you said here and thanks for commenting this, because I think I should have made this more clear now too. Facebook shows glimpses of openness with sidequest, app labs, opening up Oculus go, Meta connect ..etc Apple's whole existence is based on total control of its apps and ecosystem. It's not truly decentralized when the rich can still purchase and hold most voting power within any metaverse isn't it? Unless the metaverse make it such that every single person start a fresh and they have to work within the metaverse to earn whatever can be earn, rather than using their existing real world wealth to have a heads start. Personally I think a true decentralized system based on equal voting will not be perfect, there will still need to be some governance in order to evolve quickly and tackle issues. And before we know it, we are just moving in circle.

i guess facebook (or meta) will try to simply buy any social platform popping up in vr. lets see how long things like vr chat and bigscreen will be around without being bought by them. i hope some other companies will ramp up some competition. at least we still have valve and maybe apple will join the fray. and lots of small developers bringing new content :). and maybe there will be some open standards coming up. at the moment it seems meta is not fully closing down and work a bit together with valve and so on for open standards. and it would make sense, as they really want to broaden the reach of vr right now. what the future will bring we will see. escpecially with new headsets coming in the nextv2 years

Vr chat will probably be around for quite a while, Facebook horizon system or whatever started as a fail and continues to be a fail. Vrchat is the standard for human interactions in the vr world, it's already solidified itself. Horizon on the other hand doesn't have anyone big unless they were bought out by Facebook.

This is the first time in my 35 years of life, I actually don’t want VR!…

There will be huge amounts of money nessesary to realize such a "metaverse". How would it be possible to "pay back" an invest like that?

They continue their business model by selling our VR data for relevant in VR ads I guess.

@@CasandChary I wish it would NOT be the same but nobody wants to get a love letter for me. And who knows maybe Mark will see your video and reply. He wouldn't reply to me I wouldn't even be on his radar but I do feel happy that you replied to me that makes me happy and makes the butterflies go 🦋🦋🦋 So thank you for making my Monday

The ready player one books and movie are my favorite books and favorite movie but it scares me that we might be looking towards a future like those. I want that future but without the negatives.

I think it’s good we’re talking about it and making people aware. I think it’ll help. Let’s not make our future a dystopia!

Sounds like Second Life comes to VR

I don't entirely agree. There should be a universal platform like Linux for example. And all companies or creators can contribute into the "world" metaverse.

Lets call fb metaverse the metametaverse since it is so damn meta about the metaverse. I dont wanna link that company to the name. Make this metameta trending

Earth2 will become the ideal metaverse. Still in development

I wish they would have kept the Oculus name. It doesn't make sense with what they did. Oculus Quest from Meta sounds better

It is really sad, that the defacto model for the Metaverse are all dystopian Cyberpunk novels that have a horrible world that is slowly encroaching on an escapist virtual realm. Just the name "Metaverse" sounds so tone-deaf in that context.

Yeah.. a story needs to have a villain tho. Let’s hope it doesn’t become a reality :|||

yesss, let's be the rebellion that a good metaverse needs🤩 in my eyes, enn-eff-teees would spoil the whole thing, though, since they're only a scam anymore. but i agree, taking "things" along between microverses would need some kind of ownership proof, but that will proof (😂) tricky with all the misuse of blockchain atm to make rich people richer

Yes!!! ✊ Yeah, unfortunately there are lots of scammers out there especially in NFT world 😔 it isn’t all scam. You can use the code for good things.

I will still ALWAY CALL face book Facebook, Oculus quest just that. META is nothing to me but a Name.

Meta will be for metaverse what Google is for the internet. It's fine.
@privatemale273 жыл бұрын
The name "Meta" doesn't seem like a good replacement for facebook, but it does seem like a good one for VR. Either way, I'm steering clear of that company as much as I can.... Shame they bought up some good products.... Great that they have the funding to advance, but unfortunate how that data is all being aggregated....
@ronchu44533 жыл бұрын
If Facebook is willing to put up the money, research, effort, time and be a leader in this revolutionary idea, it's only fair if they have more control. Not saying that it would be the most ideal for the metaverse, but Facebook is leading the way on this path.

zuck is actually ruining the vr/gaming world for the rest of us. Now, the focus is on one of the most hated sm tyrants. normies (who may very well enjoy VR) will now associate him with it. Damn shame! SO much better when Palmer Luckey was at the helm of oculus.
