Now I’m curious, what aspects of a VR headset do you find most important? Like, is it visual quality or wider FOV? Let me know in the comments below. *EDIT: USB-C power delivery does NOT work anymore with the G2 so everyone needs to use the power adapter. Sorry for the mistake! I couldn't test the power delivery myself, so I followed HP's documentation, which hasn't been updated yet apparently. Honestly, after taking my headset around to other people's houses, having to set up base stations or oculus trackers, the most important quality is probably ease of setup. I love my valve index and knuckles but sometimes I wish I had waited for a Quest 2 and just used the link cable for it. And it would have saved me $700 haha
@rossybw3 жыл бұрын
For me it's ease of use and tracking. I've got PSVR and Quest 2, and I have played around with a Vive. My PSVR barely got used as it's such a hassle to set up and have around, with the various cables, the camera and the garbage controllers. By comparison, I can keep the quest in its case and just drop it on my head in 10 seconds as needed - I hardly ever use the Link in favour of virtual desktop. The ONLY downsides with the Quest 2 for me right now are the relatively small FOV and the facebook account requirement. Otherwise it has everything I need for this generation.
@KenOtwell3 жыл бұрын
I've only used the Rift S and while I would like wider FOV and perfect clarity, I would not trade-off tracking quality for those at all. I'm really very happy with my Rift S visuals and tracking and don't expect to upgrade for quite a while - I'm more interested in better RPG and Space Sim games that use the technology better. Like... i wish Elite Dangerous would use a controller-based ship interface instead of having to map my joystick controls which I cannot see! Plus I'm really tired of having to remove the controller batteries between sessions. At least make them rechargable with a docking stand.

I recently upgraded from a Rift S to a Quest 2, which I play wirelessly over Virtual Desktop. The screen quality is a huge step up and the Quest 2 software is much better than the Rift S, but by far the biggest improvement is being able to play wirelessly. I always had to be mindful of my cable before, making sure not to step over it, not to pull it, make sure it doesn't get too tangled. Being able to play wirelessly is a massive improvement in immersion. I got myself a cheap 10,000mah battery pack and I fish the wire through the back of my bra and into the headset so I can keep my headset charged and that lets me play for a solid 5-6 hours before needing a recharge. It's a HUGE improvement.

CONTROLLER TRACKING: Tested in Beat Saber. Once you set Controller position, Calibrate for latency (40ms), and adjust sound to not make the BASS vibrate speakers badly, then there is 100% Tracking! I had my GPU settings on SS=1.5 and all Ultra. Usually you would only need SS=1 on all these Games due to the massive increased HMD Res you get! I prefer the full features of the Valve Index to everything else on the market. The Tracking, the comfort, the finger tracking, the native support for Vive trackers, the audio quality, the field of view, the more than acceptable resolution, and the chance to experiment with higher refresh, and I enjoy it fully with a 1080ti My most important features of a VR headset means covering the basics of audio, comfort, tracking (With touch support), and high quality (not necessarily top) visuals. The CV1 was a complete headset in its day. Today only the Index kit is complete, and it's the only true upgrade over a CV1 as well. The OG Quest was miserably uncomfortable. Now Quest 2 has next level spyware and more compromises to bump up resolution and be cheaper still. G2 isn't up to industry standards in controls or tracking.... My favorite game is VRChat where virtual reality is the game. I can see why people who merely play games in VR can find the G2 a little more acceptable. When you generally look at your hands during a game then you always have tracking. In life you don't always stare at your hands when you want to move them. For Virtual life there is the Valve Index. For games you can pick your compromise from the others.

For me the G2 will work quite well as I am a flight simmer mainly using DCS. This means a seated position and just occasional use of the left controller where it will be in a good position to maintain tracking. At that point the visual clarity becomes king for me. Especially in cockpits like the F-16 where the MFDs aren't clear enough to have all of the data read without using VR zoom in DCS using the Rift S. I've already seen someone comment on the G2 and DCS where the clarity in the G2 is so good that VR zoom isn't even needed to do the same things. Since I don't do anything other than flight simming in VR the G2 becomes the best option for people like me.

Mine just arrived. Upgrading from Rift S to escape Facebook but mainly for the picture quality. In this respect it did not disappoint. The clarity is mind blowing with not a pixel in sight - you will see new details in everything. I didn't notice a drop in tracking quality, however the controllers are ridiculously big, bulky and heavy. What the hell were they thinking... Also finding the god rays quite noticeable compared to the Rift, and a big dip in performance even on my RTX 3080 - though it is an eGPU so am going to try this in a desktop rig.

For me, what's important is finally upgrading from the HTC Vive. I still have the original... While I was TOTALLY blown away at head tracking, hand tracking, etc... the resolution is killing me when I play games that require any amount of clarity (Elite Dangerous, Squadrons, etc.). Because I already have the Base Stations 1.0, I might go with the Index for the sake of that high refresh rate, FOV, and the knuckles controllers. But I was also looking at the Cosmos Elite which looks pretty OK as well. But the Index has the refractive filament to reduce the screen door effect. idk. I'm stuck.

I liked the index too but if you don't like having to have the lightboxes which I did not like and you mainly play cockpit, it was pretty obvious to me. I got the G2 mainly because the Mic on my G1 stopped working for whatever reason and even though I made a workaround it still not so good and the G2 just looks more comfortable and the one big thing I noted when I had my index was the sound was better so I am very curious if the G2 will be worth the upgrade... Thanks for your very complete review. I currently use a Vive Pro headset w/ Valve Index controllers. Everything works very well and the setup has been very reliable. As an older VR enthusiast, my eyesight is giving me issues. I have been waiting for technology to advance and provide more resolution / clarity. I am guessing the HP Reverb G2 may be that technology. I am wondering if the narrow FOV of the G2 approximates the FOV of the Vive Pro? If so, I am guessing I would be OK with it since that is my current standard. Also, your comments regarding the G2's accommodation of eyeglasses was valuable information for me. I have read many comments on forums about users returning the G2 in favor of staying with the Valve Index. This worries me, but I think I am going to give the G2 a try. I have a new gaming rig with an i9, a 3080 gpu and 32 gb of ram, so I think driving the headset will not be an issue. It will come down to the "sweet spot" and how sweet it really is... Thanks again.

2:10 that's not true. HP changed display settings since prototyping phase, and now power adapter is required at all times due to higher power usage. As for performance, HP changed render resolution from approx 2200x2200 in pre-production unit to roughly 3000x3000 in final version. GTX 1080 was recommended for old resolution, it's very likely it won't be enough for final headset. Could you go in depth on the clarity of different parts of the screen? Like, does it look like a lower res, or it's blurry like a god ray and it's impossible to read anything directly in the center of the screen? Can you read HUD that is sometimes fixed into lower part of the screen?
@CasandChary3 жыл бұрын
The two things you've marked as incorrect are directly taken from the specs sheet currently on HP's site as I couldn't test that myself. How confusing?! They need to update their specs sheet then 🤔 No, its not blurry like seeing godrays. Godrays are something else. Its just not sharp if you move your eyeballs down and not your head. Depending on text size, it will make it harder to read a HUD that's fixed at the bottom. Do you really not move your head to read a HUD thats at the bottom though?

As much as people might not like it, we need Valve to ditch lighthouse tracking (for mainstream products) and produce camera based inside-out tracking. Lighthouses are simply too expensive, and controllers that use lighthouse tracking appear to be much more expensive than those with tracking LEDs. That means that any headset that using lighthouse tracking is immediately going to be poor value. Microsoft and HTC don't seem to be able to match the tracking quality of Oculus or their controller design, but it looks like Valve would be able to (if they put their minds to it). If Valve managed to pull off good camera based tracking, then the current market for VR headsets could be very different. The Valve Index currently costs £459 for just the headset, and could be priced around £600 to £650 all-in if it was using camera tracking. The Reverb G2 could have better tracking and controllers without much change in the price, if it was Valve handling the camera tracking and controller design. It might even help HTC produce something competitive as well.

@@claudio7010 Oculus has really nailed inside-out tracking to the point where the difference is negligible though. Now we need Valve to follow suit.

@ariarst89773 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally agreed. inside out tracking might not be 10/10 like valve index but it can be 9/10 like quest and with much better price. Those moneys can be spend in other features of the headset or controllers.
@samik833 жыл бұрын
I think offering a system that can do both would be the best option. If you want the best tracking you can get the lighthouses as an accessory and people who are ok with the occasional tracking hiccup could use the inside-out tracking. The current 1k price tag is way out of most people's budget but that would bring it down to a reasonable level.

Great review, very fair, perfectly done, been wondering about this headset. I have oculus quest, but would like to see the difference. The tracking loss seems unfortunate... Minus that, seems like Hp, Ms did awesome on this. The clarity would sell me, but tracking loss and smaller fov? Playing ms flight sim would be awesome in this headset and tracking loss wouldn't be issue there. Hope u have chance to review it in vr when it's release in December. Looking forward to the headset comparison! Awesome review ... again!

I replaced my OG Vive with Quest 2, and I would choose clarity over field of view. First we need to see everything in the distance, by reducing SDE and increasing resolution, then it would be wiser to increase fov. Even from a competitive perspective, in games like onward you get a big advantage when you see your opponents from a distance.

Really good review and sums up my experience. I find the tracking in BoxVR make the game unplayable on the G2 if your score is important. I used to play it on the RiftS and the tracking rarely missed a beat but the G2 tracking suffers if your hands are not in front of the headset and in BoxVR your hands will naturally enter the blind spots frequently. The tracking is not quick enough to reconnect when you bring you hand back up to punch the Orb. I would say that if you play a lot of rhythm and sports VR Apps then buy the Quest2 in addition to the G2 if you have the budget and get the best of both worlds. Real shame, I hope MS can fix these blind spots but am not holding my breath.

As a VR Chat player, the tracking issues really are a problem. As much as I want to love this headset, I can't risk spending that much on a headset that has worse tracking than my OG CV1. If you have a good gaming PC, don't bother with Quest 2. It is a very poorly made cheap headset with bad quality control. Mine has some uncleanable "dirt" in one of the lenses. And it is very blurry even slightly away from the center. Audio is bad; battery life is bad with long recharging time; head strap is crap and super uncomfortable, .. All the replacement and upgrade of parts will cost you at least 300 bucks. The $299 Quest 2 only has 64G storage which is garbage. You need to buy the $399 one with only 256 G storage. So, the total cost is about 700 bucks. Even though you can attach external storage to Quest 2, Oculus will not recognize the external storage and hence cannot use external storage to install any apps to your headset. The FOV of Quest 2 is seriously bad. It doesn't have enough power as a standalone headset to run any AAA VR or non-VR games. The Snapdragon XR2 with Adreno 650 will not deliver enough power. It is incomparable to a mid-range gaming PC with Intel i7 and an OK graphics card. You can still use Quest 2 to play some simple VR fitness games though cause it is really "wireless".

@binkbankbonk13 жыл бұрын
The Reverb G2 was my first VR headset. I was kind of surprised that there is blur in a VR headset as I had just assumed that it wasn’t a thing. Upon finding out that the blurriness is a thing in VR I went out and bought a Quest 2. I was surprised to find that both appeared blurry to me using the correct IPD adjustment. I will say that it seemed easier for me to adjust the Reverb G2 until it was less blurry than the Quest 2. Your results may vary. I will say that you will likely notice the blurriness more on the Reverb G2 than the Quest 2 though as it is a clearer image and it will be more noticeable.

Hey can you tell me what's your wireless setup? I have a Quest 2, have a 5GHz router (kinda an old one), and the speed is 866Gbts, but even when Im fairly close to my WLAN router, I get some stutters. I have tweaked around in the settings, but it's still not always perfect. Have you any suggestions, maybe buy a new router? Or what should I do? PC is connected to the router via Ethernet, so that's not the problem. Also all the settings on VD are made so that I have the lowest latency. Also, what headstrap would you recommend? Elite strap? Or the Vive Deluxe Strap (Frankenquest)?

@@RabbitConfirmed I use a 5G netgear router and get about the same throughput speeds. Maybe try repositioning your router or decluttering the frequency and play around with quality settings in virtual desktop. I prefer the Vive head strap because it comes with the earphones so you can kill two birds with one stone, it is also a bit more comfortable than the elite strap in my opinion.

So I waited until G2 to order because the first iteration was fraught with defects. Guess what ??? So is this one. I used it lightly for a month (yes) I purchased January 7, 2021. The display failed with multicolored red,yellow,and blue circles (about 16 groupings). After two days of a nightmare of tech support with HP I learned that not only did they not have spare parts to replace or repair the unit (said it could be MONTHS) but after grilling one of the small/medium business customer service specialists I learned that the G2 was fraught with as many and maybe more defects and in her words they had 'more returns for defect than they could handle at this point'. Don't buy it. I have owned many many VR headsets and this was the biggest disappointment of them all. Fantastic resolution in a very small sweet spot and then complete failure a month later with HP literally rolling over on their own product. BTW this was purchased directly from HP. I should also mention I have been high level IT for 30 years. Good news is they are claiming they are giving me a full refund. I will believe this when I see it.
