Fun fact the reason midge was considered problematic was because, parents thought she was a single teen mom. In reality she was an adult married to Allen.

@@WelcomeApathy She was married to Alan as part of a “Happy Family” line and a bride and groom set. Then she was sold with Alan and their son Ryan. Only after all that was the pregnant version of Midge sold. But parents don’t always keep up on what the story lines are with these dolls, so parents just knew that Barbie is supposed to be an older teen. To them Midge was “a Barbie”, so she must also be a teen. They really should have put on the packaging that Midge was Barbie’s neighbor or something like that, the same way Skipper and Stacie dolls said they were Barbie’s little sisters. Anything to show that Midge is an adult, not one of Barbie’s peers.

An ex-gf of mine used to obsess about her beauty--especially during her manic episodes. She'd flash her phone in my face of some random girl on the internet and ask me if the girl was hotter than was she. 😕 Obviously, this was a *terrible* situation, because we all know that any reply was non-sequitur to the real issue. And, as expected, I eventually had to exit that relationship because simply put... megalomaniacal narcissists are both self-destructive and they also cause MASSIVE collateral damage to anyone and everything around them.

The last drop in the bucket very often is the first to spill out...followed by the actual things that spilled said metaphorical bucket. I felt that line too. It's not about the first line said in a breakdown. the first line is the last straw.... and it I can be superficial but the problems that caused it aren't and that's why I liked it. It felt real. One thing tho, Barbie saying "I'm not pretty anymore" as her first line from her existential crisis is completely valid. I'm pretty sure other people can relate as well but just from that one line, I completely understood exactly how she was feeling. As a character that's most commonly known for that "picture perfect BARBIE doll appearance," there's now this expectation that's created that not just other people but Barbie has of herself, which eventually becomes a measure that determines and validates her worth and value. The line isn't meant to be taken literally, but as a way to express how Barbie feels. Her mind's probably all jumbled with a blur of different emotions that she feels so overwhelmed that it's numbing. There's so much going on in her head but she can't formulate any words or doesn't even know what to say that can even closely describe the true gravity of her current state. Therefore, the only thing she can think of to say is "I'm not pretty anymore," which can also implicate or be interpreted as a way of Barbie confessing that she doesn't feel good enough and doesn't understand or see her own value.

@@manaash4316I think it would've been a valid message. But I think he sinned it because that it was a conflict that was put in the film randomly without ever introducing it and then it was never even paid attention to. So it's really a sin about screenplay writing choices than it is about what they are trying to convey. And while I love the film, I couldn't deny that Gerwig tried to resolve too many conflicts in one film which is humorous. But she did manage to balance the rest brilliantly.

I saw it more as; I now learned about patriarchy where only men get 'better' jobs, so now he doesn't believe her that she is in fact a doctor. He just learned that it should be a man in this world. His only refference is Barbie World and anything he learned about the Real world from random books he grabbed. So he just follows what he read and saw; everything being about men.

i think its meant to be that since he noticed things were basically opposite as barbie world then he assumes a 'real' doctor would be a man in the real world and not her. plus he doesn't know or have any knowledge on what doctors do and probably no other barbie does so he probably thinks a white coat is enough. now I'm wondering if doctor barbie would automatically have a real professional doctor's skills if she became human. because if we assume that the job they're given actually gives them those talents then she can probably can.

Whilst I agree with removing a sin for Ferrara's speech, I feel you should have added one for her having to use the uniquely Ferrara superpower of making a speech at people to move the plot forward. When I saw her name in the opening credits I immediately knew she would make a speech at some point, because it seems to be her typecast role.

So you'd reward Mattel for turning human suffering into plastic toys to market depression and thoughts of Death to young girls?!?! The entire point of those fake ads was to highlight that corporations have no ethics and will make and sell anything if we let them....and that it's the experience of living - not owning things that make life worth living.

I'm glad they pointed out a lot of my issues with the movie too. I personally didn't care for it. I really, really wanted to love it, but it felt like a lot of ideas and not enough structure. Like a string of Barbie themed skits they loosely strung together to turn into a movie. The plot starts out being about Barbie going to the real world to find the girl corrupting her. Then it suddenly is about Ken finding out about the Patriarchy and bringing it to Barbieland. Then it becomes Barbie liberating the other Barbies and tricking the Kens. Then it's about Barbie having an existential crisis and debating on being human or not. It's just a lot. There's some fun scenes and it did get genuine laughs from me but it's definitely not the movie I thought it'd be. Seems like it's more loved by the masses because it's a movement and not a movie but hey, it got people to the theaters and that's important especially nowadays.
