Let me add this one thing. There is a video of the stage show. NONE of the cockroaches or the mice or the breaking into another cat's house is in there. It's just the MAIN cat, announcing that it's time to choose who gets to be taken to the Heavenside Layer to be reborn to a new Jellicle life. The rest of the play is cats telling you about themselves with the Glamor Cat getting harassed by the others throughout the play until she sings "Memory." I want to thank you for running this. It shows me that I was right in missing this abomination.

The only reason I can think of as to why they didn't do that is because they wanted the ballet and dance elements in the movie. If they made it fully animated then the dancing isn't quite as impressive so they'd have to cut out a bunch of it if not all, and replace the screen time with actual plot. And, considering the severe lack of plot overall, this would be a disaster from the start. Maybe an animation would work for a shorter story with fewer characters, but not for a feature-length film.

And once my mom's husky howling activated her Alexa and she wound up with cops at her door because apparently the Alexa thought someone was dying

All other times the word "Jellicle" is used in front of a noun (like songs, moon, ball etc.) it's just to relate the words to the Jellicle cats. It's as if you'd say "They are American cats who sing American songs during the American ball under the American moon". Except they are not American cats, but Jellicles.

the old gumpie cat is actually such a fun song in the 1998 version! the cat whos supposed to song the first part "i have a gumpie cat in mind" to "and thats what makes a gumpie cat" is munkustrap and then jellylorum, bombalurina, and demeter (might've misspelled names and also gotten them mixed up) sing the fast paced part starting at "but when the days hustle and bustle is done" and then they sing about how jennyanydots (the gumpie cat) helps out the mice and roaches and the 3 girls and munkustrap pass the tempo/song back and fourth to show that during the day, the cat sleep around and hangout out but at night shes active. its literally just saying "this cat is basically nocturnal". also the 1998 version is WAYYY funner and cooler PLUS no scatting mice! and also good costumes and the song is actually performed properly

Also it does have messages and themes. The themes are childhood whimsy and sense of community and cats being cool. The message is "don't be a dick to washed up old women because they might be sad" (more generally just. Anti rejection/pro inclusion of outcast). It's a very basic, Disney animated show message, but it's still a message

What the producers missed is that in the broadway version, the audiences imagined actors portraying cats (animals) singing and dancing. But no, they wasted that obvious opportunity, and instead of creating CGI cats reenacting the musical. They decided to add CGI feline features to human actors. The result totally falls on the uncanny valley
