For people who are curious, "Chekov's gun" refers to a narrative concept that if a gun is shown at one point, the reader/watcher is expecting it to be fired later on. It's basically the fancy narrative way of indicating setup and payoff. Even Old Man Marley is an example of Chekov's gun. He is introduced as a criminal in the beginning, revealed to be a good person in the second act, and returns in the third act to save Kevin from Marv and Harry. The big premise of Chekov's gun is that you shouldn't include elements of the story that serve no purpose. There's a lot of debate on whether red herrings prove or disprove that (I say they prove the point, because they are implemented with the specific intent of throwing readers off of a mystery).

One of my favorite examples of Chekov's Gun that is, well, a rather silly nod to it. Is the gun over the bar in Shaun of the Dead. A character constantly tells everyone the gun is real, loaded, and can fire. And everyone says it can't until one point near the climax of the movie. The gun fucking fires. A very good comedic nod, intentionally or not, to Chekov's gun.

Being the wet bandits is so much worse than being bandits. Imagine you’re robbed. It sucks but you can replace valuables and they likely didn’t take the inexpensive stuff that has sentimental value. Imagine you’re Robbed and the people leave water running for days. All your valuables are gone and the house can be destroyed by rot and mold.

Well I’m surprised that nobody has noticed that Kevin looks out of his window on Christmas morning to see his elderly neighbor finally inviting his son and granddaughter back for Christmas day, and what looks like two men show up at the door. If that is the case, then the movie takes on a whole, new meaning towards the end. He judged his son because he was gay, and is finally inviting them back for Christmas day, reuniting his family in spite of the differences between them.

Another part is there is an uneven number of people between the vand meaning one van would have one more person then the other so each person would assume their van is the one without the extra person. There are a couple things in the movie that actually makes a lot of sense why they didn't realize he wasn't there that don't require suspension of disbelief. The rest do of course.

The headcount is meaningless anyway because it doesn't actually set up the mother's big "KEVIN!" moment on the plane. There was nothing to do with a count because she remembered precisely that one person had been left behind and indeed who it was, without having to do a re-count. Etc. Why am I writing this? It's Home Alone ffs.
@aviation_nut
@aviation_nut Жыл бұрын
Not only that but real life has shown that often times huge mistakes and disasters are the result of many individual little mistakes. In risk management they call it the swiss cheese model. You have guards to mitigate something like this from occurring but there will always be the case where the holes in those measures line up just right so that a mistake falls through, and it will certainly look like a horrible coincidence crafted by Murphy's Law. It's why occasionally airplanes still occasionally fall from the sky despite the thousands of measures employed specifically to prevent that from happening.

(Hell, I still watch Legal Eagle's videos on the legal accuracy of court scenes in movies.) Of course, as we all know, CinemaSins makes the mistake of presenting what should be playful musings about movies' accuracy as legitimate problems, made worse by intermixing them with sarcastic "jokes" that are basically indistinguishable from their attempts at criticism. Anyway, keep up the good work, Birdman. Hearing you beat CinemaSins at their own game by having factual grounding for your sins is always delightful.

I heard another fact as to why Kevin got left behind. A lot of people claim that the plot with Kevin being left behind is unrealistic, even for a large family. But there was an if-you-blink-you'll-miss-it scene (not in this exact video but find the actual scene) where after the family fight in the kitchen began. After the dad mops up the spilled drink with the wads of napkins or paper towels, he unknowingly slides the wad over Kevin's plane ticket, which he then tosses the wad into the trashcan, not realizing he threw out the ticket. I've watched the movie for years and honestly never noticed it until I watch one of those "Did You Know?" shorts/videos on KZbin.

Also, you had to supply the battery for the clock radio. A *lot* of people didn’t bother, power outages are pretty uncommon and 9v batteries were not free.

THANK YOU for addressing Deux Ex Machina! I once got into a discussion with someone who referred to the appearance of a character in the third installment of a video game a Deux Ex Machina. Except for the fact that said character has been around since literally the beginning of the first game. It's fucking exhausting.

8:11: Let's not forget that this same cop knocked on the door twice to see if anyone was inside. When Kevin didn't answer due to him being scared, the cop just went "screw it" and left. 9:44: Also, after staking out the house all night, Harry caught Kevin sawing down a tree in his backyard by himself. If a kid were to do that, he would have someone older than him to accompany and help him. That was another reason for Harry to believe Kevin was by himself. 11:34: If Jeremy was talking about the party in the house that Kevin was walking by on his way to the church, it's possible that Kevin was walking on a separate block and the reason why no else, besides Kevin, are aware of these 2 is because Harry mention in a scene that Kevin's house, specifically, was the only reason they were robbing houses on HIS block.

Some poor sucker with no family and no where else to go for Christmas? Possibly, but that'd give the McAllisters a slightly dark streak, wouldn't you say? :) "Look after our house, you cretin, while WE all go to Paris with our loved ones." Sinister stuff! Hahaha.

I'm glad that I'm not the only annoying viewer who is annoyed at the nitpicks(sometimes imagined or explained in the movie) that SinemaSins counts. It's great that somebody points them out. P.S. I have never before noticed the "dog in the kennel" line, so thank you for pointing this one out too!

12:52 This is actually a legitimate point. It took the cops more than five minutes to arrive after a call about a burglary, but Kevin's house is less than a mile from the police department, which is a three-minute drive under normal circumstances (and the police have sirens and almost no traffic to contend with).

You know what, I'm with you on that last sin there BM. I work for a security company, basically a snitch with a costume, and anytime I have to call the cops or for paramedics, they're always an hour late, even though I know for a fact the district office is maybe a couple city blocks away. Someone could be running through my house with a machete, and the cops won't show up until everyone in my house has been slashed and the dude is gone.

Yes thank you! I always hated Jeremy’s Home Alone video. Idk if it’s his worst but it shares the same problems all the CinemaSins videos share. Plus him going after one of my favorite movies (Christmas themed or otherwise) doesn’t help. Maybe he could deal with the traps alongside the Wet Bandits.

Calling the cop joke, well the reasoning for cop's response time is hilarious Birdman. Though here they are in Chicago suburbs (I think), so response time should be pretty decent yet it's Christmas and might be far away from a police station.

How about when CinemaSins claimed we never see Kevin's room. But we do when he talks to Jeff about packing a suitcase. They're in a room with bunk beds and we see that room again briefly when Kevin looks at his "battle plans".

The scene where Buzz and the other boys are looking at Marley serves a second purpose....one of the themes in this movie is fear and Kevin having to overcome his fears. One of his fears in the movie IS Mr. Marley....and Buzz is planting the fear in Kevin by telling him this story about Marley being a murderer. He CLEARLY doesn't like Kevin, and is trying to scare him in this scene. Since Kevin ran away from Marley in terror twice before talking to the man and realizing he is not a scary murderer, one can see that this scare tactic by Buzz worked. For the sin where the cop checks the house, YES...in fact the cop DID INDEED need to enter the house to fulfill his purpose, because Kate SPECIFICALLY asks them to go to the house and check on KEVIN, who is an 8 yr old child, who has accidentally been left home alone, and tell Kevin that his family is coming back to get him. A responsible thing to do would probably be to have an officer STAY with Kevin or find a friend or neighbor to watch Kevin until his mother came home to get him. The cop walked up to the front door, took a look around and then LEFT the house WITHOUT seeing Kevin. Total fail. As a result, Kevin spent two days by himself and had to fight off a couple of burglars. And since Kevin DID leave the house unlocked, it would have been all too easy for the cop to walk through the front door and have a look around for the child in question. HOW is he to determine whether or not Kevin is OK unless he ACTUALLY SEES Kevin and speaks to him? Harry makes the assumption that Kevin is home alone when they see him decorating the tree, based on them hearing Kevin's dad leave a message on the neighbor's answering machine and it just so happened that the Wet Bandits were robbing that same house and overheard the message and they determined that Kevin was home alone based on that message....they knew which house belonged to which family from Harry pretending to be a cop and when Harry heard it was the McCallister house that Kevin was home alone in, he thought it would be an easy job and he says multiple times to Marv that this house, in particular, is the one he wants to rob. That's why their next move is to rob the house, not knowing what Kevin has in store for them.
