The Sentinel Atlan mechs are powered by refined Hell-magic and built by a space Templar warrior culture. The concept of traditional military vehicles probably never occurred to them since they were uplifted by a godlike alien species when they were at the medieval magic level. So instead of learning how to make reasonable tanks, transports and aircraft, they have armored ogres, giant humanoid mechs, fortified dragons and medieval catapults and trebuchets made of space material that fire energy beams. The Terran small mech was designed by a robot megacorp head whose primary focus and expertise isn’t in military strategy despite being knowledgeable in pretty much everything.

Any idea about how mech design may change under different gravity or on different planets/situations like on a large sci-fi ish battleship?
@duncanmcokiner42424 жыл бұрын
In lower gravity, you could use heavier armour with no penalty but being larger would still make you a bigger target. So you'd want heavier armour, not necessarily bigger. Though with point defence systems on the tanks, giant tanks could make a comeback in situations like that.
@zakmackay4 жыл бұрын
You would just need smaller feet and legs relative to more gravity. Do you mean inside or outside the starship? Inside it would probably be limited to corridor size. It would probably be too small for most mechs and just heavy exo skeletons. Outside point defence weapons and smaller star ships would probably make them not usable. If it's anything like a naval battleship their would be hundreds of small guns to stop them and other threats. Battleships have thick armor so a escort could just shoot the mech off the battleships. Or a bomber or a secondary gun while leaving the main armor intact. I also imagine if boarders where a potential issue battleships would have strong points built in and marines onboard. A cannon could be made to shoot down a hallway at incoming mechs. Or you just lock them in a section. Battleship bulkheads or barbettes where pretty thick to control damage. Sure you could cut a big hole into a barbette to fit a mech in. But their meant to stop battleship sized guns so would take some time. Plenty of time for marines to prefer fortifications or launch a counter attack.

I think gundam has decent designs myself (only focusing on the mobile suits...and I'm just leaving out the actual gundams since those things are basically super heroes in a military setting). The issue is their massive weight and their size (would buckle under their own weight and be too big of a target not to miss with evry wpn on the battlefield). How powerful would the BFG 10,000 in Doom Eternal be compared to other guns in Sci Fi like the UNSC ODPs, Imperium Nova cannons, Star Wars EU Turbolasers, and other deadly powerful weapons?
@alonelyperson60314 жыл бұрын
It depends. If it has the BFG tendrils like it's "lesser" cousin, then it's strong as fuck. However, if it doesn't have that...well it's still strong as fuck. Given how often it can be fired and how destructive each shot is. From how fast it fires out side of Star Wars Turbolaser, most of the series you gave will be out fired. As for destructive power comparison, it out matches that of the Turbolaser, if I have to give a comparison, I believe the BFG 10k would be similar to an eclipse laser. Only smaller in scale (The Laser on the eclipse is like 14 km long, while the BFG 10K is like...what ? 200-300 meters in size ?) All in all, the BFG 10k is a much much more effective weapon compared to the other 3. Due to it's size difference , it's destructive power, and the fact that it recharges that quickly.

"I don't think velocity's all that important when you're firing against flesh." It's important. Mainly for a few specific phenomena. First off, at below slingshot speeds, rounds get quite low penetration without a bladed tip or being ridiculously oversized. Second, at about 700 m/s, *human* flesh goes from deflection of the temporary cavity out of the way of the permanent cavity (a hole that's barely bigger than round caliber, to tearing the temporary cavity walls in a star shape. This means that it's worth trading quite a lot of mass, caliber, and energy, to go from a mach 1 round to a mach 2 round. A Five-Seven at the higher end of its speed range is gonna be more effective than 9mm in many regards, because it will have the cutting effect that rifle rounds do. Additionally, at around that same speed or somewhat, hydrodynamic shock can cause severe damage in surrounding tissue.

Good video liked the comment of the footlights... I wanted to add some thoughts if anyone wants to read... *The second cabin on the giant ARC mech seems to be most likely for the pilot rather than just the mg mount, given that in the clip he was holding pacific Rim minifigures, so... +2 pilots? So maybe Navigation, Main gunner, Anti-air gunner, Commander/communicator operator? *The cannons on the foot might be use against anti infantry demon (most of the ones we face) they could possibly have a greater fire arc to avoid being overwhelmed by heavy demons like the new ciber-demon hell knight and variations. *The lack of standard armor on this game means that they are not a valid option, these giants could simply chop a building in half and throw an entire apartment to said vehicle, the total kinetic energy and momentum will kill the crew instantly and most probably destroy the cannon barrel, suspension and also flatten the whole vehicle, a similar frame of reference would be a tank experiencing a free fall and the later impact with the ground. *Also the about the glass hatch/view port we could be wrong, given our primitive way of thinking for a person of the early XXI century :P... It is most probably a transparent metal layer or even a ceramic composite much more resistant. After all we can see trough a glass because it's molecular structure doesn't block light photons nor trap them and also it already exists transparent aluminum as proof of the technology. *Finally i wanted to add that the lack of evidence of destroyed air assets would mean that they were overwhelmed in Air combat or destroyed by ground forces, revenant missiles could lock on much higher thermal image of a jet fighter, plus the added danger of the lost souls charging at them in high numbers, we don't know their maximum speed but we know they don't break the sound barrier so if we assume they have a mass relative of a human head said 8kg and they travel at 300m/s their kinetic energy upon impact would reach up to 360KJ of energy, compared against the energy released of one gram of TNT (4184J) and divided by it means the could achieve up to 86.6g of TNT in terms of energy equivalence... at least against an unaware naive human being hit by it would indeed experience a more powerful mk2 frag grenade (52g TNT) going off beside him.

I call BS about tracked platforms not being as cool as mechs. It's all about how they are shown and used. Normally mechs are cool because they jump in, jet around, slide across the ground on heel wheels, and spin their arms about engaging in cool poses. They are highly animated. A tank on the ground, by comparison, is most of the time something that slowly rumbles up, and then turns its turret to a target, and fires a normal explosive shell before stopping to reload. Nice, but something we are used too. However, with that tech for the mech, you're tank can be so much better, it can shoot around crazy fast, rapid acceleration, nice suspension work and it can smash over and through obstacles looking cool. It's main cannon can spin around very fast and fire high powered shots one after another, or even go the normal mech route of have a giant rapid fire machinegun sort of thing (not a bad idea when fighting fleshy demons honestly), and if it's still supersized it will have the energy and bad ass ness from its weight as it plows through buildings, its front them comes down, smashing into the ground before is massive suspension absorbs that energy and the whole thing rocks, then the main gun fires and the whole tank rocked back, nearby buildings are blown apart from the blast as the massive shot flies down range, hits and tears through half an enemy titan before detonating inside or perhaps behind after tearing streight through, blowing it to pieces and raining demon guts and rubble around. All while immediatly taking off with its massive tracks tearing apart the ground beneath it as it lurches forward rotating its turret over to engage the next target. Secondary guns mounted along it firing at and shredding the swarms of demons trying to get close all the while. In the end, most of the COOL is just in how something is shown to act. And most people when they think of a tank just think of, and when making them animate/make them to act like slower modern tanks. If you want future over the top stuff in your setting, tanks can be made awesome and over the top just like anything else, it just requires some creativity and thought on the part of the users. Like that movie with the big rolling cities that eat each other, impractical but also plenty cool even though its just giant wheeled/tracked cities, normally wheels are boring on everything, and cities are boring being everywhere... but if done right with energy and creativity, it can look cool. The conventional idea of a wheeled/tracked vehicle (car or tractor) versus a limbed unit (ninja, knight, warrior) is just what people base this on, ninjas and samurai and knights are obviously more cool in a fight than a little car or slow moving tractor. But think about how they CAN be with better systems, and better automation and sensors and materials like is needed for a mech anyway, and suddenly the cars and tanks can become pretty bad ass. I recall my first sci fi future tank I thought up was one that normally drove at like 100+mph, and could go to 200+ on ideal surfaces, able to literally just drive right over water and hydroplane. It had a fast rotating turret with low size but high velocity rounds for hitting other such mobile tanks. Another on in another setting with more verticality used a type of teathering field system in setting on its tracks so it could literally drive upside down on overhangs or up vertical cliffs, while mounting a giant plasma cannon and AI minigun turrets for infantry, and a rack of micro swarm missiles as a get out of jail free card. It's all about creativity.

Coincidentally America, who loves tanks barely has any military shows or movies about them. Fury is a great movie and made a tank look really cool. But that's it, I cant think of a single other american movie or show where tanks are actually the focus (yeah, sure they are in the background in most military fiction, but that's it). Its downright shameful and as an American I want more tank movies. Insult to injury is that japan has more media about tanks then america (admittedly it's not alot, but it's still more then america). If your fine watching anime then try out "tank police" for scifi tanks, but for more historical try out "girls und panzer" (cute girls compete in "safe" tank battles in a tournament between teams of tanks) theres a lot of high octane action for the tanks that it's worth sitting through the high school girl parts.
@neomab37804 жыл бұрын
Well not to burst your bubble, but in order for a titan to be killed or rather disabled due to them being immortal you must use a crucible type weapon. So the idea of a tank with a giant spear seems a bit of a stretch. But besides that, the creator of the mechs likes em a lot
@terricon44 жыл бұрын
@@neomab3780 Blow them apart with cannon shells, ram them with a spear cannon bayonette. Simple, or my favorite, just fire the special weapon type as a form of special ammo if you can. If it's too valuable and must be recovered then that can be doable, a special teather unit on the outside of the barrel that when the given round type fires tighten resulting in it being attached to the outgoing round means you could have a standard round that upon firing has a teather line on it that can pull it back. With charges and shells stored seperatly in the loading system it's not especially hard to see a tank the size of a small factory able to easily re sheathe the weapon into a sabot and restock it into the magazine without too much excess space taken, much less than the random space taken on the legged robots at least. And again, yay for ranged over melee. It's just so much more practical in most cases. But ya, the games artists liked mechs, and I get that. I just think most people who like "mechs" do so more than other systems because they don't put enough thought into just how cool other systems can also be once you add that level of unrealstic and impractical and advanced technology that is requires for mechs, into said other previously conventional platforms as well.

@@jaromswenson7541 Most of our war movies focus on a hero character/bad ass dude. And large faceless machines don't tend to work as well with hollywoods style. Battle Las Angelas and plenty of other movies shows tanks in them, sometimes being bad ass, but usually they are either background assets, or its something like mission impossible or that fast and furious one where it's only because some hero units go into one, with lots of internal camera shots. Also since tanks require a crew to operate, it doesn't work as well with solo hero characters in that regard either, and that's easier for most movies since hollywood movies like to highlight their big actors that are in them, and this type of story doesn't cover that as well, or wth the requirement of multiple people support those. Fury was great. Generation Kill was another great one that also had the group of guys down well, but these types are more exceptions than the rule here. Part of why airplane movies have been more common is because you have one pilot flying, so you can convey a lot more character with the movement/actions of the vehicle to the main pilot actor. Also the big bubble canopy and stuff lets you get plenty of nice shots of their face, that are decently lit unlike in a tank. And they go back to the airbase after every sortie, so there's a chance for booze, plot development, and S*x scenes in those more so than actual deployment in say a tank. Also something hollywood likes.
@jaromswenson75414 жыл бұрын
@@terricon4 I would disagree one some points you made. One, the more popular Hollywood types involves groups of actors as the focus (even if the movie is focused around only one of their goals). Character interaction is important and many go to the movies to see it (this is why oceans 11 and avengers are popular), amd this is really common for military movies, people like the group dynamics of squads of soldiers, it's that "brothers in arms" type feel that works and is why fury was so good. As far as interacting in a tanks confined space it can work. We know it does because mecha anime does it all the time. The majority of the mecha shows have the cockpit completely covered and have plenty of character interaction between pilots stuck behind shit tons of armor. Though in animation it's easier to cheat space with the camera, it's still possible and cgi can make up for the failings of live action in this regard. The main reason tank fiction is so rare I'm my opinion is because Hollywood is just fucking lazy and dont know about an untapped market. They dont like to experiment often these days and just like to crank out derivative work after derivative work. They are standing on the shoulders of previously proven movie types and franchises and are afraid to forge new paths. In japan there is this aspect of derivative media as well, but we see alot of experimenting, especially in animation, maybe it's a difference in culture and how media is viewed in it, and while I cant exactly put into words what the difference is, I can can clearly see that one nation is more willing to take risks and come out with more variety then the other.

You're referring to augmented reality. I like to think the Night Sentinel's have a sophisticated method of meshing the neural link of the pilot and crew's heads into the mech's resident AI or UI for a seamless control of that thing. I can see that's the only way to do it given melee combat against an equally large or larger titan would occur. Imagine the Slayer using that against the Icon of Sin. That'd be sweet. I also think this ain't the only mechs the Night Sentinels have in their arsenal and are likely to use the same tech in controlling them. The ARC mechs, for all their advanced tech, lack the unique augmented reality interfaces the Night Sentinel mechs use just by looking at the way they're designed. But that's not to say they're slow and useless. On the contrary, I think these ARC mechs have rudimentary AI to assist in targeting and providing real-time data to the pilot or crew when in operation. They're not designed to do serious CQC against a demons or a titan but are still capable of doing so if necessary at the cost of a slower reaction time compared to the Night Sentinel mechs. ARC mechs seem to be more like tanks with legs and arms than metallic gladiators. ARC mechs were designed to suppress large hordes first and foremost with the potential to fight melee combat only in dire situations. Let's talk about the design philosophy of ARC mechs. That ARC small mech seems to be an anti-personnel mech and was designed to counter the mancubi, barons, and hordes of ghouls. Mechs like these seem to be force multipliers while leaving the dirty work for armored soldiers. Big mechs are a different story. They seem to be mobile battleships designed to attack on medium to long range against titans. Melee combat isn't in their design but if they were, it should have 2 hands just like the Night Sentinel mechs and would have a giant blade attached to one of the arms as a melee weapon whilst carry a detachable shoulder-mounted weapons pod to handle medium to long range sniping. I think in terms of variety, ARC mechs are far more suited to open warfare than Night Sentinel mechs. They just have more specialization yet flexible enough to do whatever they're needed to fight. Night Sentinel mechs were just designed to counter titans with an emphasis on melee combat. The design is well in line with their warrior culture.

Counterpoint for the argument that it would be better to put a large cannon on tracks: due to the fracturing of Earth, a traditional tank would be unable to traverse the surface of Earth, plus a tank would be too slow to escape a Pinky's charge. As for the placement of turrets on the shins, this would hinder any demons trying to climb the legs of the mech, and could also hit targets too low for the arms.

Why does the Sentinel mech have a big codpiece? My guess would either be some kinda ballast system and/or fuel/coolant reservoir. Or maybe it’s just happy to see some demons? @shadowtear1014 жыл бұрын
The arc heavy mech actually looks pretty functional and would probably do good in its role. However I can't see its cannon be used on a tracked vehicle. The best spot for it would be on the arc mech as putting it on a tracked vehicle would A result in the crew being overunned by demons or B the tracked vehicle getting stomped out by said titan. Also you didn't mention this but both arc and sentinel mechs seem to be really heat resistant as both mechs can be seen sitting in pools of lava in the game.

Aren’t the Mech’s in hell owned by the Night Sentinels? Also, you have to keep in mind that there were no roads once the demons started destroying everything. Oh, and according to the ingame lore (found at the super gore nest), they also have battleships and hover tanks! I think I may have seen one or two at the arc complex? Also obviously these were all powered with ARGENT technology! So maybe they had antigravity technology to make them lighter or something...

The 'ankle guns' on the heavy mech actually is a pretty good idea to some degree. They're probably anti-personnel weapons that try to get close to the legs. The issues get to be the lack of firing range and the constant movement of the legs would make it difficult for the turrets to aim even with AI operator and that they might do better a bit higher up on the body so demons a would have less a chance to get into range. Also, there's clearly headlights all over the damn thing.

I strongly suspect that pilot access to the small mech is actually by the entire front of the top hinging open. Also, I don't think it's actually how it's designed, but in actually trying to build a mech that size I don't think you could get the pilot's head DOWN that far in the torso without them curling into a ball. Not an effective driving position. So, it's almost plausible that those windows ARE periscopes, just angled down instead of up... except then the shot-trap angling makes even less sense.
