There seems to be some common themes in a lot of these comments, so I'll address them 1. "It's the future, you can't understand how it works." - It is the future, yes, but the Scorpion is either using modern or outdated concepts. It taking place in the future doesn't make these concepts any less outdated. In fact, it's the opposite. Technically you could make WWII era tech more effective by updating it with future technology, but it would still be less effective than updating modern tech or simply using future tech. 2. "The 90mm with APHE is fine, maybe they have future propellant that makes it really good, and improved the APHE shell." - If you can make a future 90mm that is more effective than a modern 120mm, why would not make a future 120mm and make it exponentially more powerful than a modern 120mm? A 120mm is, by principle, more powerful than a 90mm, regardless of the timeframe. The same goes for the ammunition. HEAT and APFSDS is, by principle, more effective than AP/APHE. A 90mm APHE shell has less explosive potential than a hand grenade, while a 90mm HEAT shell had around 7 times the explosive potential of an APHE shell, and has the added benefit of being much better at penetrating armor. In Halo lore, it's confirmed that the Scorpion's 90mm isn't seen as adequate by the existence of the Grizzly, which has two 120mm cannons firing HEAT shells. If the Grizzly's armament is what is seen as necessary to be adequate or surpass Covenant armor, then the Scorpion should at least have one 120mm firing HEAT. The existence of the M820 Scorpion with a 152mm ETC gun also confirms this. 3. "Moving the engine to the front is bad, because it produces a larger thermal signature, and most modern MBTs have the engine in the rear. It also makes the engine less protected." - Tank engines are so hot that it doesn't really matter if the engine is in the front or the back, the tank is going to be seen regardless. Most modern MBTs have their engines in the rear because they follow traditional tank design; turret in the middle, driver up front. The Scorpion has the turret in the back and the driver in the middle. With that in mind, where does that leave space for the engine? In the front. Engine protection is superfluous. In actual tank-on-tank combat, the vast majority of the time it only takes one shot to disable an enemy tank. Putting the engine up front provides more protection for the crew. You can replace vehicles, you can't replace people. 4. "Mjolnir costs around as much as a frigate. It would be too expensive to give the Scorpion plasma-ablative armor." - The plasma-ablative armor was one of many components of Mjolnir. I imagine the most expensive components were the neural interface, power supply, strength enhancement, the liquid crystal "computer" system, and atmosphere regulation systems. Considering how the UNSC seems to like throwing money at their problems, I don't see it being that much of an issue if it allows the Scorpion to survive longer in combat. 5. "The independent track pods are a good idea, it allows for better cross country mobility." - Actually, it's the opposite. You want your track to be aligned with your hull. If the Scorpion tried to climb a steep hill, the front tracks would begin climbing, but since they have free range of motion, the hull would not angle to crest the hill. The hull would dig straight into the hill while the tracks tried to keep ascending. Not to mention that making a mechanism which would be capable of transferring power to the tracks while they are freely rotating would be difficult and a maintenance nightmare.

I had to stop reading after 2 because I couldn’t take the blatant bias anymore. You do know that mass is only half of the equation right? That means a faster projectile with less mass CAN have more kinetic energy than a larger-slower projectile. Additionally, there is the issue with capacity and general utility. The military used to use .308 for general use, now they use a .223 which is much smaller. You would say “why not use the .308 because it has a higher destructive capacity” but the fact is the magazines are smaller and the ammunition is more expensive and heavier. The same is true for large munitions, the larger the cannon the more difficult to carry enough ammunition. Say what you want but there is certainly a give and take when it comes to cannon size. And you literally how good future explosive-armor piercing shells are. Just saying.

The Pelican has a 70mm auto-cannon in the nose and the Longword fighter has 110mm rotary cannons with 120mm rotary guns in the ventral position, but the Scorpion has 90mm HV gun, Halo's choice of what to give vehicles has always struck me as odd
@Nighthawk2401
@Nighthawk2401 5 жыл бұрын
The Longsword's isn't extremely unreasonable from what I can tell. It's mainly an interceptor, not a fighter, so heavier guns would be necessary against the larger craft it's designed to kill. Judging by their looks in game though, there's no way they're rotary cannons, or smaller ~30mms. The rest though seem like someone didn't know what to label them as

That's just because the author doesn't know shit about guns or bullets. It's mentioned somewhere that the sniper fires like 114mm bullets, it doesn't, it fires 14.5x114mm, a real round used a lot by Russia, it's a bit bigger than a .50 caliber. I don't know what the pelican actually fires but it's likely a 20mm. That's always something that's bugged me, they switch between the right and wrong terminology a lot. Also there are different moddles of scorpions with different size guns. I believe the one on H5 is 155mm, ive also heard of 105mm and of course 90mm moddles, they swap a lot between games, which is cool because a lot of things people assume are just art style changes but in actuality it because it's made by a different manufacturer or is a new/ old moddle. Though things like elites turning into ogers was originally just pure retardation that was "fixed" by saying theres different sub species of elites even though that was literally never mentioned till people started getting mad at 343i.

I don't thing Bungie understood that HEAT and High Explosive Armor Piercing were different types of ammunition. The game was developed in 1999, so it would make sense that the lack of easily available information (especially information that would change nothing about the game itself) wouldn't be a priority to spend resources on. So, they just slapped a cool name on it and went on there way.

Some of Bungie's team members were retired military. They took a lot of inspiration and advice from them. Obviously they're not going to know everything and I don't think Google would have offered answers back in 1999 with search engines still battling it out. It's still kind of hard to find military related info for creating credible artwork. Look at Hollywood. I cringe every time I see fingers on the trigger, no bone support, and chicken wing arms when shooting. That's all day one shit.

They put a lot of work into fleshing out the world of Halo. The UNSC is essentially like the Star Wars Empire fighting guerillas on their colonies. My explanation for why the Scorpion exists is two-fold: Space is big, and government corruption is bigger. Before the Covenent/UNSC war, there were colonial revolutions being fought against Earth's central government. I'd like to believe the design was intended to be bad, because should any of these tanks be captured by the rebels, they would be useless for them because the Pelican dropship's armor is thick enough to withstand 90 millimeter rounds. Since the rebels did not have tanks of their own, the Scorpion was 'fine', though it likely went through the same military industrial complex BS we see these days like with the F-35. Was likely a hybrid electric tank, which is why it weighed so much, as someone had mentioned. Really, the more important military asset was the dropships. However, when the Covenant came about, it was nearly impossible to replace the Scorpion, because of the insane logistics involved with shipping new tanks and new parts across the galaxy. So instead, the UNSC adopted a Soviet-inspired method of logistics, where you just churn out crummy weapons in mass quantities and throw them at the enemy. That is why you don't see a lot of attachments on guns in Halo, bar ODST variants, because they are meant to be brought to the front as quickly as possible. Since soldier survivability was pretty low anyway, there was no use in giving the vast majority better equipment. But they better make darn sure that they HAD equipment! Yes, there could have been a better tank. But this can easily be explained away by the idiocy we see now in the world. There's probably a good reason why the human colonies wanted to rebel...

The Grizzly tank from Halo Wars is much more in line with what you describe. I think, canonically, the Scorpion is made to be a rapid deployment platform which would explain the smaller gun and more minimalist design. It makes sense that the Marine Corps would use something like that given the fact that by nature it is a rapid deployment force. So by calling it a main battle tank, it could be that it is the main battle tank for the Marine Corps. Not for the UNSC overall. Then again, it’s a video game and none of that truly matters. Lol
@facosa9924
@facosa9924 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. In a war where you must deploy units and support battles between a shit ton of planet with complicated logístics, its makes sense. Lets compare, from wwii, the tanks used in the european battles and the ones used in the pacific war. In the european front, tanks from the late war were mainly big, with low speed and good armor and guns. Europe was a single landmass. Logístics werent an easy task, but still they had a good network of airfields, trains and roads conecting everything a cross the continent. That why germans had Tigers and Panthers with no problems, Russians had their KV2 and IS2, and technically the first nazi defeat was when their tanks couldnt cross the sea between Englsnd and France. Now lets see the Pacífic War. All the battles were fought a cross diferent Islands, where the only way to deploy units was trough sea and, only when the Island was adecuated, air. Deployment of tanks and other ground units on Europe was easy compared to the nightmare of doing it in the Pacific Islands. Thats why japanese used lighter tanks, easier to transport and deploy, and their heavy tanks production was low. Now lets compare that to the halo unvierse, where All fights are fought a cross diferent planets All across the universe, where the only way to deploy tanks its via air. You would definetively want a more japanese minimalistic design, wouldnt you? That also explain why an Air unit like the pelícans or the longswords have way beter armament that a tank. Those are easier todeploy a cross the galaxy, while tanks are merely a support unit for ground operations that cannot be done from Air

In Defense of the scorpion. Lets start with the tracks and suspension The extremely low ground pressure doesn't make sense for a modern army, however it does for what the UNSC do. going to countless planets across the galaxy, these things need to go in every type of thinkable terrain. more importantly, with variable gravity on these planets. so having one tank that goes to the extreme on it's low ground pressure covers all those basses and ensures the tank can travel freely on any planet the UNSC go to. On that note the suspension. Yes, bogey system's are outdated. however they still have an advantage. Logistic's and maintenance. the UNSC is an interplanetary military. having tank's that are easy to maintenance is basically a requirement. The extremely low ground pressure, and the fact that the 4 free swinging track segments each also have suspension like movement means that the bogey system actually doesn't have to work all that hard to do it's job. meaning more modern suspension options are actually not necessarily needed over a more easy to repair and maintain system. though I will agree the track attachment points to the body is indeed a weakness, even if you use future technology it's a mess waiting to happen on such a small connection point. and the lack of visible driving wheels is also an issue, though we can pin that mostly on forgetting to put it in, or not bothering because it's a game. As for personal knocks to it The 4 track links are indeed a weakness but I also see a strength to them, in that the fact they both swing, and have suspension of their own, helps the bogey suspension on the actual tracks do their job's better making the outdated tech more viable. I however would be in favor, like you said, of only having 2 tracks, and instead of htese tracks sit on suspension of their own, capable of pitching by perhaps 10 degrees to the body, to allow the scorpion to maintain this advantage factor. The gun I agree is awful. 90mm auto loading gun that can only fire once every 2-3 seconds..? when the the pelican has a 70mm auto cannon, and the longsword has 110mm, and 120mm rotery cannons? this thing should either be massive or have pretty much automatic fire rate. I understand it has to be slow firing for game play, so on that note why not like a 150-200mm. But it is what it is The body is also a bit of a mess, unnecessary hull MG that should be controlled by the driver, who's hatch should be centralized and not have any open view ports unless they decide to partially raise it, frontal engine, as like... what is all htat space on the front for at that rate. and yes, perhaps a larger back section to house the larger gun and supplementary ammo

Ill try and answer some points you made: "The extremely low ground pressure doesn't make sense for a modern army, however it does for what the UNSC do. going to countless planets across the galaxy, these things need to go in every type of thinkable terrain. more importantly, with variable gravity on these planets. so having one tank that goes to the extreme on it's low ground pressure covers all those basses and ensures the tank can travel freely on any planet the UNSC go to." -Modern MBTs are literally designed for multiple types of terrain. The problem with the Scorpion isn't that it has low ground pressure, it that it has unnecessarily high ground pressure. Its quad tracks make it bad for various types of terrain, especially soft ground, or hills. One would imagine those would be fairly common as desolate planets likely are full of rocks (like mars) and more verdant worlds would have swamps or jungles with softer soil. The Scorpion might work in urban environments with lots of roads and gentle slopes.... but a tank with standard tracks would work just as well if not better. this goes to your next point: "the fact that the 4 free swinging track segments each also have suspension like movement means that the bogey system actually doesn't have to work all that hard to do it's job. meaning more modern suspension options are actually not necessarily needed over a more easy to repair and maintain system. though I will agree the track attachment points to the body is indeed a weakness, even if you use future technology it's a mess waiting to happen on such a small connection point." -The freely swinging track beds is actually an awful idea and mean that the scorpion basically has no trench crossing capabilities, as a ditch would cause the front treads to swing down, and get stuck, and now you have to overwork the rear two to try and get out. if you had standard tracks you'd do what tanks were made for, and gracefully cross the trench. The turret in the rear would actually be perfect for this, as more weight in the back means the tipping point is further back, a single set of tracks would find it far easier to overcome the length of the trench (which would have to be greater than half the length of the tank). this advantage is negated however because the free moving quad track system would ensure the front treads swing down, throwing off the balance and becoming stuck. "The 4 track links are indeed a weakness but I also see a strength to them, in that the fact they both swing, and have suspension of their own, helps the bogey suspension on the actual tracks do their job's better making the outdated tech more viable. I however would be in favor, like you said, of only having 2 tracks, and instead of htese tracks sit on suspension of their own, capable of pitching by perhaps 10 degrees to the body, to allow the scorpion to maintain this advantage factor." -the strength is not really there for the reasons said above. if its easier to upkeep bogies for whatever reason then maybe it would be viable... but I have my doubts. If you're talking about pitching the tracks/body, in a way similar to the Swedish S-tank then sure, that could be viable... but it's pointless because the elevated turret gives it great gun depression (so much so you can almost directly hit yourself). Adding verticle traverse capabilities to the track would also negate the advantage of "simple logistics". if it's hard to maintain and offers virtually no benefit then why bother? "The gun I agree is awful. But it is what it is" -yeah pretty much... "The body is also a bit of a mess, unnecessary hull MG that should be controlled by the driver, who's hatch should be centralized and not have any open view ports unless they decide to partially raise it, frontal engine, as like... what is all htat space on the front for at that rate. and yes, perhaps a larger back section to house the larger gun and supplementary ammo" -the driver has way too much to do already, no need to give him control of ANOTHER gun. A coax gun and the main gun are already a bit too much for one man to keep track of, let alone turret traverse, and driving the fucking tank. If the turret was manned then perhaps the driver could have a front facing mg with limited traverse... some early ww2 m3 Stuarts had driver-operated guns... they weren't very effective but I guess maybe if it was like its own mini turret the driver could pick off infantry if the tank isn't driving. as you and spookston said though, the engine should probably be at the front, especially because the turret in the back could use the ammo stowage. Now for some of my own thoughts on the design. It's a near-perfect sci-fi design for its world. This is a game about a cyborg super soldier who fights colorful aliens in a Niven-Esque setting where all the humans are stereotype 80s action movie characters straight out of aliens and predator. The humans are in rugged, chunky-looking vehicles that are again, 80s action movie gold. Their armor is this sort of dull browns and grey that implies a type of futuristic depression, as humanity is desperately trying to beat the aliens which use some magic plasma technology. Nothing in that is inherently realistic, and it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be fun and iconic, not change the way we think about science. People walk around on a ship with no logical means of artificial gravity... its just space magic. FTL travel is possible, it's all sci-fi tropes. That's ok, it's a sci-fi shooter, and the tanks are allowed to be impractical... the scorpion literally looks like its namesake, you're supposed to find it fun and intuitive. People forget halo is a very artistic game and takes creative liscene when building its world. You see and hear the magnum and you know its power. You see and hear the sniper and know it's going to knock an elite on its ass. you see the scorpion and you go "this is a tank, it'll blow-up shit" and so it does. the weirdness in the designs are there to make them memorable. People see the Denel NTW-20 and go "oh my god it's the halo sniper!" because it's unique and that's the point.

Scorpions are main battle tanks which for reference don’t follow (light, medium, heavy dsuper heavy classifications) they are universal armoured vehicles capable of providing artillery support taking out infantry and vehicles alike, the first ‘main battle tanks’ were (if I’m not mistaken) the British centurions which were heavy, very big but with just an 82mm gun (early versions). The scorpion good in its various roles of main battle tank, but admittedly they wouldn’t be good at taking out starships, like a longsword.

1. Since this is 500 years in the future and all, wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that in all of that time, some advancements have been made in explosives? If so, it’s perfectly reasonable that a 90mm gun might be used. A smaller shell is easier to accelerate, and more ammunition can be stored in the tank. 2. The ammunition. Again, if any advancements in explosives have been made in so long, it’s reasonable to assume that less explosive mass would be required inside the projectile in order to do the same amount of damage as any similar shell. This means there would be more room for, say, a tungsten penetrator. So honestly, the gun and ammunition, considering the UNSC’s doctrine, are perfectly fine. 3. Armor. Titanium ceramic armor is not used on any MBT anywhere in the modern day. Titanium is too difficult to work with, and too heavy to mass produce a composite with currently. However, it would produce a superior armor to anything current if used in a composite, especially if any advances in ceramics had been made. It’s also important to note that in most composite armors, there is an ablative, plastic layer. So the armor is likely quite effective as well. 4. The tracks. The advantages of having four independent tracks are the same as independent suspension on a car; Handling. Being able to independently move all four sets of tracks would give the Scorpion quite a bit of extra agility when compared to similar vehicles with two tracks. There is also the fact that if one set of tracks is damaged, it doesn’t completely immobilize the tank, as it would with a two-tracked vehicle. The tank is also still capable of crossing trenches, (though it isn’t likely to encounter any anyways, due to covenant doctrine). The tracks rotating inwards while crossing a trench would actually result in quite a bit of grip on the sides of the trench, along with a much higher capacity for climbing. 5. The reason the engine is in the back is likely because of two things: First, the thickness of the frontal armor. The frontal armor of a futuristic vehicle such as this, even considering its updated composition, is likely ridiculous. It will take up plenty of space. Second, the suspension and transmission. The torsion bars and transmission for each track system would likely take up a lot of space inside the tank if they were adequate to support the tank, while, say, crossing trenches. So the arrangement does make sense. 6. Ammunition stowage. We technically don’t know where the ammunition is stored in the scorpion. Though it likely is in the back of the turret. If that’s the case, it’s almost certain that if the ammunition package was hit, it would be ejected through blowout panels in the back of the turret. Preventing injury to the crew, and damage to the rear-mounted engine. So in short, while there definitely are things wrong with the Scorpion, these things aren’t them.

About the titanium. Russia has always had better luck with titanium than anyone else as they put in resources and time into making giant vacuum chambers for making titanium-hulled Submarines (not pure titanium but a large percentage of titanium). Titanium is actually quite a common element on earth. It's just that it has a bad habit of combining with oxygen in the air at high temperatures as titanium dioxide (a brittle ceramic), hence the vacuum chambers. Now I don't know the complex composite possibilities with titanium but I do know that titanium on its own is about as light as aluminum.

Points 1 and 2 are rather silly tbh. If the tech has been improved so that 90mm shells becomes a valid option then 120mm shells would also be exponentially better and it is highly likely that the cost wouldnt be that much higher either. Point 3: While not outright false you are still bit misleading. Titanium alloy is used in tank armor, one such example is Chobham armour. Point 4: Surely there are some advantages for having the tracks in 4 separate pods but the cons outeighs the pros in this case. The maintenance would be long, difficult, very frequent and an absolute nightmare. And no the advantages would not be the same as a car. The tracks have their own suspension in the pods themselves and on top of that the pods are free hanging and that latter part is what makes all sorts of problems that would negatively impact on offroad cabapilities. So in short th scorpions issues most definitely are what has been said in the video.

If technology makes 90mm guns better, then it stands to reason that a 120mm would, if applied with the same technology, be fucking baller as hell. It's just dumb to use the reasoning "they have better propellant", because technology like that can be reasonably scaled up. And considering the kinds of enemies the UNSC has to kill, it would be much better for them to go with a 120mm, seeing how that would kill enemy tanks better. Think about it, dude.

I've always been partial to the idea that the scorpion is simply designed to what the pelican's hauling capabilities allow it certainly makes sense from both a gameplay perspective, as devs probably want to be conservative with scaling, and from a lore one, UNSC doctrine appearing to be incredibly reliant on expeditionary tactics when conducting warfare, so being able to quickly mass deploy armour via space Mi-24s seems like the principle design philosophy with their 'main' battle tank, and the Grizzly/Rhino/whatever can handle the rest I also wouldn't be too surprised from a lore perspective that tanks just aren't all that important 500 years from now, and as such no longer need to dominate the field, especially considering that the UNSC had to go from being from one side on the asymmetric warfare coin, against the insurrection, to the other

@@adamredmayne1326 and it appears to be none of those things, nor does that seem to be the lore intention. Its described as an MBT, and while capable of being air-dropped, its 1 coax gun with an exposed second gunner makes it pretty bad at dealing with infantry. The raised turret is a horrible idea for open combat but would be perfect for hull-down/defensive fights. quad tracks give it bad ground pressure which would probably be fine on worlds with less gravity than the earth, but make it even worse on planets with higher gravity. a tank like the one you're describing would be like... the gauss/rocket hog. Cheap, extremely mobile, fast, easy to air drop... do the old forge "rice bowl" trick and you have a decent light tank.

I know this is what makes it have the resemblance of an actual scorpion, but it has to expose almost all of its main body to have a good line of sight. Wait, why would you store ammunition for a presumably automatically-loading tank gun in the main chassis? The turret is constantly in motion, on a horizontal motion-compensating pintle mechanism. It seems to make more canonical sense for the ammunition store to be in the enlarged turret head, with the autoloader mechanism. It would reduce complexity, allowing for greater ease of mass production and automated maintenance. It would also be safer for the operator, since any kind of ammunition cookoff would happen a good distance away from the crew compartment, engine, and fuel tank. Besides, I think the Reach Scorpion ejects spent shells from the turret, if I am not mistaken.

One minor point I'm sure someone has already brought up but I figured I might as well add in just for completeness is that the Scorpion can be operated by two crew or one person with a sufficient neural interface. If you don't have a person with a sufficient neural interface one crew member acts as a driver while the other is the gunner. I would assume the Gunner doubles up as commander in this scenario and that the Scorpion has enough computer assistance on board to make this possible.

i think the problem here is the difference between "crew needed" and "optimal crew" technicly speaking you could operate a modern tank with only a driver and a gunner (asuming its autoloading or the gunner does his own loading) but usually you want tank comanders and/or radio operators as well (+ potentialy some auxilery gunners for defencive turrets and/or a dedicated mechanic or stuff like that)

i think you will find that every modern day tank, has its engine at the back, and for good reason, its easier for maintenance aspects and the heaviest armour of a tank is at the front, and also in modern day tanks, their ammunition storage systems are located all with their turrets, not within the main body of the tank, since that is a very outdated design.
