I have longed for an atheist commentary on the Bible -- what it actually says -- and Hemant has provided EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have read the entire Bible multiple times and listened to recordings designed to invoke reverence for this utterly absurd text, thinking, "My God," all you have to do to destroy any belief you might have is to actually read the words. I did not expect him to explore Leviticus, the most absurd of all Books of Moses. But here we are, and I am grateful. Hemant's hilarious commentary reminds us why the Torah produced so many Jewish comedians. As Groucho said: "Who you gonna believe? Me? Or your own eyes?"

Later, after reading several scholarly books about the bible, I decided it was time to read the whole thing. In the course of 3 yrs, having read the book through several times and the gospels, letters and various noncanon writings, atheism set in like concrete. I don't think that an open minded, thinking, questioning person could thoroughly read the bible and not become an atheist. The many redundant passages saying "I am the lord" is actually saying "I am yahweh". Those passages were written to establish yahweh as the main deity of the Israelites during Deuteronomic reform time. They were trying to distance themselves from their polytheistic roots
@exillens2 жыл бұрын
@@halebopp4747 We know this because 1. The word "Lord" is the English transliteration of the Hebrew "Adonai" which was a generic Hebrew term for "Yahweh" the Israelite god. 2. Because we know of the well documented polytheistic roots of Israelites who were simply a sect of Caananites who decided for multiple reasons to make yahweh their chief god out of the El pantheon usurpin El Elyon, Baal and other gods for their henotheistic cult. 3 We know of the land disputes between alleged Jews "returning" to Jerusalem from Babylon after king Cyrus of Persia sent them to Jerusalem after conquering Babylon under the claim that Jerusalem was once their ancestors land vs the jewish land dwellers who were still in Jerusalem generations after the Babylonian exile claiming the returning Jews to be heretical puppets sent by Cyrus to annex their land and tax them for Persia. The jews that remained in Jerusalem saw the Jews coming in from Babylon as heretical puppets with a Deuteronomic "reform" and temple building aspirations they found disruptve and foreign and filled with Persian Zoarasterism influence(this is when yahweh made the jump from a local tribal deity of Israelites to a universal deity in mold of the Persian god Ahura Mazda and when Satan made the leap from just an agent of yahweh to a universal bad guy in the mold of the Persian Ahraman). Hence why many Jews at that time saw the temple, monotheism and the Torah as a late corruption made to appear ancient for authoritive claims. The alleged returning Jews had the financial, political and military backing of Persia (the most powerful nation at that time) hence the Jews who remained lost the PR and political battle and Deuteronomic temple, monotheistic Judaism became the new standard. 4. @@halebopp4747 1. Straw man much? I didn't say the presence of yahweh's name. I specifically said the "redundant" out of context over use in passages is indicative. Having the deity say I am the lord your yahweh every sentence is ridiculous and overkill. Thou dost protest too much. The bible's claims of post Deuteronomic polytheism in the context of Israelites "sinning" and being turned away from monotheism as if they were monotheistic from the beginning is also another attempt to distance themselves from their ancestors polytheistic roots. 2. El is a specific name of a specific Caananite deity El Elyon who was head of the pantheon and whose consort was the goddess Ashera. "El" was to denote any being belonging to his pantheon and later became generic in Jewish literature after they had yahweh usurp El in their pantheon and made Ashera Yahweh's wife before later removing her altogether during the politicized Deuteronomic reform by Persian Jews. 3. The Samaritans were a result of Assyria taking over Israel to the north of Jerusalem over a hundred years before Babylon took over Jerusalem. The dispute to this day is how much Samaritans played a role in helping Assyria after they were brought into Israel and how many of them are of actual Israelite lineage. You're getting your people and events mixed up. You're simply referencing names for reference sake to give the appearance you know what you're talking about. Samaritans existing have no bearing on the history of Deuteronomic reform. 4. The word Lord capitalized in the Hebrew bible denotes the name yahweh

Is it just me, or do other people find it odd how Christians and the bible writers seem to think people worshipped the idols themselves (treated the object they made as a god) and not the god the idol represented? I'm not well versed in those other religions, but after leaving Christianity and learning just an extremely basic understanding of other mythology it already seems unrealistic that someone would make a figure and worship it, even in those times.
@jeanine2192 жыл бұрын
I have wondered about this before as well. I think that ancient civilizations were praying to or worshiping NOT the stone, or the fire, or the golden calf, but instead whatever supernatural deities that they attached to said objects. But the Abrahamic religions dogmatically facilitate this misconception to disparage other religions. Isn’t it interesting though, how if the object is a cross, or an artists contrived image of a face labeled as “Jesus”, all of the sudden these objects are encouraged by Christians, to be put on walls, in Evangelical church sanctuaries where prayer is held, on body parts in the form of jewelry, etc. However, by Christians’ own definitions in other contexts, these definitely would fit the definition of “idols” and “graven images”.🤔 The Bible is so full of contradictions and double standards, no wonder just the the Christian religion alone, is splintered into 3,500 disagreeing denominations.
@josefj.cfourie1982 жыл бұрын
They have to in order to justify the fact that they themselves worship an idol. The "cross" or "Yeshua on the cross" (or Jesus if the wood is painted white) is nothing more and nothing less than an idol. They have also made a human, Yeshua, a god... technically they replaced Yhwh with Yeshua, after re-branding him Jesus. They decided that they do not want to follow Yhwh's "holy" word, so instead, they decided to not follow Jesus' (Yeshua's) "holy" word. Thus... they are just very misguided Atheists.

There are references to practises of royalty or people in high, priestly positions having their titles placed on their clothing. Since he is riding a horse, the title would also be placed at the location of his thigh to be seen as he rides. So on a part of the cloth at the thigh. Or on a sword, which would be carried at thigh level. There are several historical examples of gods and warriors depicted with their names and/or titles written on their tunic at the thigh. So when an English translation says "on the thigh" it doesn't necessarily mean on the actual skin of his thigh. It can also mean in the area of (on) the thigh. Remember that the Revelation is a highly symbolic text that isn't using the exacting language found in a literal reading of English. The goal is to pass on meaning from the symbols that go beyond the mere words written down. Just as the very same text saying he was wearing many crowns or had a sharp sword coming from his mouth were purely symbolic. None of this was to be taken literally or parsed to the very last preposition.

To me, thats potentially like using.something the happened in WW2 as evidence of a fable from the time of the battle of hastings in 1066 👍. I think biblical discussion should be "the story so far".. Of course, the norman invasion of 1066 could be linked to ww2, but only in retrospect. Would WW2 have happened if 1066 had not. Thats a what if that can be debated. Leviticus 19. Let’s find out what our good friends YHWH and Moses has to say this time. Leviticus 19:1-4 How does the Israelites be holy? By bringing animals to sacrifice exactly where YHWH wants killed for that sweet odor that pleases the Lord? Sounds like YHWH is so unsure of himself that he needed to remind people multiple times to not worship false idols or make any gods before Him. Leviticus 19:5-8 To summarize verses 5-8, no eating left overs on the third day and it must be eaten on the day of the sacrifice. If they are leftovers on the wrong day, cut them off from their people. Leviticus 19:9-10 Picky, picky. Why not reap the very edges of the field or gather the gleanings of the harvest? So guess the Israelites has got to go over their vineyard one time and they cannot pick up the grapes that have fallen. Guess there was no such thing as the “5 second rule”. “Leave them for the poor and the foreigner.” That verse is decent. What that means is to leave some food for the poor and foreigners. I can get behind it a little. Leviticus 19:11-12 Oh like how televangelists are constantly lying about anything: Kennth Copeland lying about how “Jesus made him get a private jet” or Brisbee lying to children (K-8) about how there’s “evidence” of an intelligent designer when there isn’t one like what Aaron Ra pointed out. It’s ok to lie if it’s in the name of Jesus and God, but better not bear false “witnesses” against thy neighbor no matter how questionable some are. Btw, goddamn. Other than all that, I do think it this is a good verse here. If there’s only more like this. Leviticus 19:13 Well, the Israelites did looted all the treasures in Egypt back in Exodus. Leviticus 19:14 I think not cursing the deaf and not putting a stumbling block in front of the blind is good enough. But again, why create deafness and blindness at all? Leviticus 19:15 Well, tell that to mega churches who buys out politicians to anoint them in power. What does YHWH mean by “do not show partially to the poor”? Also, why are there favoritism in both churches and in the Bible? YHWH played favoritism on Cain and Abel back in Genesis 4. He preferred Abel’s offering as if it was superior to Cain’s offering. Also, the last part of “judging your neighbor fairly”, that has single-handedly what lead to people like Greg Locke committing atrocities in YHWH’s name. They would use verses like this to justify being bigots to people and look down at them as if they’re inferior. The author should be the last person to tell anyone to “judge fairly”. Plus, isn’t there a verse that contradicts this by saying “don’t judge others so you won’t be judged”? Leviticus 19:16 Oh really? The crusades, the witch trials, conversion therapy, confederation that owns slaves, may I go on? There is a reason the Bible is associated with the dark ages. Too many examples of how the people “supposedly” following their Bible had hurt more people than converted them. Leviticus 19:17 “Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart” Yeah.. Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and the rest of Nazi Germany disagrees with that. They placed the Israelites (Aka, Jews) in gas chambers and other vile shit. Why didn’t YHWH stop them like he did to Pharaoh? Why let them suffer under evil hands like that? I thought they were important to YHWH considering his promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Leviticus 19:18 I can see where this is going. It isn’t healthy to hold grudges against anyone. It is also nice to try to befriend everyone. It’s how we get someone like Owen (Telltale) or Bernie Sanders. If this is all it takes to be a great Christian, then sign me up. I would replace one of the Ten Commandments with this. Unfortunately, that is just a pipe dream. Leviticus 19:19 Sorry zoologists, you can’t mate up different animals. Apparently, there is no such thing as a “kind”. Evolution has looong beaten Christianity to the punch in explaining the different types of animals. And.. no wearing mixed material clothing. Sorry fashion enthusiasts, you can’t wear mixed fabrics no matter how well some can go together. Leviticus 19:20-22 Here we are. The first three pro-slavery verses. This is where the Confederate Army in the South got the inspiration to own people. Especially the arbitrary conditions slaves are put in. They don’t know if their master is nice or complete assholes. It’s usually the latter. I had been fed false information of how YHWH “supposedly” condemns slavery by punishing the Southern States of the Confederation. I was even told they would own black people. Also, why didn’t the Confederate Army sacrifice rams? How did YHWH not condemn slavery back in Exodus? This is just messed up. Leviticus 19:23-25 What does YHWH mean by “regard its fruit as forbidden”? Was he referring to the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil back in Genesis 2? Also, what a weird rule to not eat the fruit of a new land for three straight years and suddenly it’s holy on the fourth year. Even for the fifth year, shouldn’t the Israelites leave some fruits for the poor and foreigners? Leviticus 19:26-28 Who would want to eat meat with blood in it? There are diseases like salmonella poisoning. Divination? Seek omens? What are those? Does YHWH approve of haircuts of any kind? How about having long hair? What haircuts does YHWH if he does approve? Why no tattoos? Is there any dangers? How would the Israelites even know what tattoo is or even what it looks like? Leviticus 19:29 That’s it? All it toke is one daughter to turn the land into ancient Las Vegas? Who would even “degrade” their daughters? Where’s the logic in that? There are plenty of dads who would protect their children including daughters. Also, what if the daughter consents to being a prostitute on her own? Leviticus 19:30-37 No fortune tellers, no Buddhists, no nothing that isn’t “God”. What if elders are assholes? Are the Israelites still expected to “show respect” to them? Trump and QAnon did not follow this rule on not mistreating immigrants. I guess they’ve never red this part about treating foreigners with love. Why not use length, weight or quantity? Is to accept them for all shapes and sizes? Is it to encourage people to show unconditional love for others? What does the author mean by “use honest scales, honest weights, honest ephah, and honest hin?” What a mouthful.. There are a few genuinely good verses to live by like loving thy neighbors as thyself or be kind to foreigners or leave some food for the poor. If this is what Christianity is about, then I would be all for it. It’s not what’s it about sadly. It’s about obedience and following the myriads of rules that aren’t cohesive or hold up well in time. This is not the work of an all-knowing or all-loving God. It’s a work of primitive authors who make things up as they go and needed something to write about. Other than the few good verses here, this is nothing to write home about.
