Apple has used the Lightning connector for seven years. It used to be on everything but now it's only found on two types of devices. iPhones like the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, and lower-end iPads like the iPad Air. The lightning cable Apple includes with the iPhone XS doesn't support fast charging and transfers data at USB 2.0 speeds.
In order to get fast charging you need to buy the 30w USB-C power adapter. Apple uses USB-C on the iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro. Switching the iPhone to USB-C would unify Apple's products. But it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon.

That has always been Apple's marketing philosophy. Can't hate on them for having their own in-house hardware when they have an established consumer base and brand identity. I personally don't have Apple products (both because I can't afford them and that I wouldn't prefer them otherwise), but I think that anyone who wants to be a dedicated patron of the iPhone and the Mac shouldn't be complaining about the overpricing and the slow data transfer speed of the lightning connector-because that's just what they're getting into. You can't have your cake and eat it too, so to speak.

“In like two years, they won’t” do you even know the reason why companies are excluding the wall adapter boxes? Because there’s starting to become a shortage on this one type of micro chip, I can’t think of the name. But all technology uses it. Microwaves, fridges, car entertainment systems, etc.. people already have dozens of charging boxes sitting around their homes. Do you REALLY need another one with a shortage going on? So no, they won’t exclude the cables, because it’s just copper and rubber, or plastic or whatever. There’s no chips in them, so why tf would the be excluded? Dumb. Educate yourself before you spit out blatant “facts”.

Basically. Type C is so ubiquitous and excellent at this point, we may never need another physical connector again (everything will be wireless by the time it's obsolete). I just can't wait until all PCs have only Type C ports and I can just toss a flash drive or my mechanical keyboard into my gaming desktop without even thinking about it's orientation. BUT most peripherals are still Type A and even my nearly new Ryzen mobo only has a grand total of 2 Type C ports.

@@manupasta Have you seen the horrendous voltage ripple of OEM apple chargers?!? Go put one on an oscilloscope, its atrocious! They also don't even hit rated spec of even 1 Amp... Its more like 800 mA... That's worse than a lot of the $5 cheapo chargers! My iphone 6s fried my laptop (30 day old iphone, only OEM cable used and OEM charger), was mobile tethering and "oh, my internet is down. Huh, must be like Windows and just switch the USB so it recognizes it again... Nope, that didn't work, well, let me plug it into the charger to see if its the phone bugging out or a cable or something... Well it worked, let me flip the connection, huh stopped charging... Well, flip it back and nope its dead! Dead charger now! Let me try a mouse on the USBs on my laptop, oh crap... It killed my laptop USB ports!". Anyways, Apple refuses to pay damages, there are little burn marks on the 4th pin (as everyone will have, its a design fault of Apple's lightning cable, and I bet I know how it got its name...), anyways, they must have crappy tolerances (as an engineer, I am using "crappy tolerances" to mean either a design or atrocious manufacturing defect), because you can even see burn marks on the metal ground housing of the cable as well as looks like the 4th pin jumped over to a data line.... Yeah, that's not good! Meanwhile on USB C: Goes to dollar store, picks up a braided pretty $1 USB C cable, uses it on phone with 24w fast charging (12v 2 amps) and it works just fine, plugs in either direction, doesn't leave burn marks even though its 24w vs roughly 4w charging (800 mA apple OEM charger at 5v is 4w). Yeah... USB C is just much better engineered, it doesn't short out and much cheaper to make! It also doesn't leave the ground on the same contact plane as the live voltage (so setting it on metal table doesn't short it out like it will with Lighting cable... Horrendous design!)

White rubber is not an engineering decision; it's a marketing decision: white rubber stands out when it's new, absorbs grime and looks old in 6 month, then it breaks after a years of use. To all those championing the lighting cable because they've managed to squeeze a few years out of one by cherishing it, remember when telephones weren't cordless? The cord was tangled, lent on, pulled, jerked, yanked, ripped out of the wall, played with, stretched under doors, those cords lasted 100 years.

I was an Android guy for several years. When I got my first iPhone (5) in 2014 (yup, it was a well used one, but still better than what I had before), I was stoked by the Lightning cable. USB 2.0 was well enough for a phone that time, the cable was ergonomic, no little teeth to grab on everything in your pocket (see microUSB) and the reversible connector just blew my mind, that was the first time I've seen one like that. When the first cable broke on me, I was a bit upset by the price of the new one, but I forked out the price. And, to be honest, up until this time, I think the Lightning connector is good, even better than the well loved USB-C one. Because, if dust gets in the way, it's much easier to get it out than any portable type USB connector. There is only one huge problem: it is designed by Apple... And because of it, this one time innovative solution didn't have any significant updates, and years later is still proprietary...

Lightning has a lot of the same benefits that USB C does, it just cable before it. It was capable enough at the time, and it still does a decent enough job as it is, particularly since Apple doesn't allow much transferring between a computer and a phone without using iTunes. Also someone pointed an article out to me that said Apple was forced to stop using a material in their cables, PVC I think it was? I think that would explain the reason for Apple's cables in general being more fragile than others.

Amen on the lightning cables fraying frequently! Mine last on average a year, maybe two if I’m lucky, and I’m extremely careful about how I unplug mine. I’ve literally watched a few of my cords fray themselves not long plugging them in to charge. And the frayed spot is always in the same general area. Apple is very much aware of these issues, but their employees at the Apple store are either given false information on the issue, or they prefer to pretend it isn’t an issue. Either way, they usually replace it at no charge (no pun intended there) thankfully, but it is a nuisance to have to make an annual visit there just for this issue.

Apple has long had a weird obsession with proprietary connectors. I remember when USB first came out and they insisted on coming up with their own alternative to USB. Then some years back, they came out with their proprietary connector for their monitors, which really screwed up my office when they ordered them. Our Macs, at the time, still had graphics cards with VGA connectors and we had to have adapters ordered before we could use our new monitors. They remind a lot of Sony who also, used to, constantly try to come up with their own proprietary media formats, none of which ever caught on.

AzovFr “ Support for USB 3.0 speeds is notable because the Lightning port on current iPads and iPhones can only transfer data at around 25 to 35MB/s, which is USB 2.0 speed. At USB 3.0 speeds, data transfers would be upwards of 60MB/s and up to 625MB/s “ That’s from a magical thing called GOOGLE... do you require information on how to wipe your own butt, too?

@@MrBLAA what grade are u in to think researching something over google is the standard way to go. The actual specifications should be released by the company and those are the specs you consider as standard.

I wish Apple would see and learn from this video! I generally think that anything that transmits information (such as: HDMI, Internet cable, etc ...) should leave the world and be replaced by a USB C cable that will be used for all different needs
