6:50 Sony came up with a pretty interesting physical zoom in their xperia 1 iV thats worth mentioning. In the 1 iii they managed to shove 2 lenses mechanically swappable in front of one sensor, but on the next iterations they achieved an actual 85-125 focal lenght, with the zoom barrel laying sideways inside the phone and a 90 degrees mirror facing front. Nobody knows or barely care about it yet I find it amazing!

There are smartphones with optical zoom, like the Sony Xperia 1 V. It uses multiple moving lens elements inside the periscope module for true optical zoom between 3.5x to 5.2 magnification, staying at full 12MP, no upscaling/cropping at any magnification between 3.5x and 5.2x. Asus and Nokia had experimented this in the past. But today, only Sony makes smartphones with optical zoom.

As a photographer, I will say with confidence that a phone camera, as good as they are now a days, will never replace a standalone camera. My mirrorless camera with the amazing lenses I have always blows away my phone camera. I still do use my phone camera for quick snapshots here and there, but I carry around my mirrorless way more often than I should, which I always default to without question.
@kashishkumari4266 Жыл бұрын
Is it apsc or full frame.?
@Ballissle Жыл бұрын
For me the main advantage of my mirror less over my phone even though I have the s23 ultra is that I find the mirror less to be way easier to get the photos I want and adjust the settings quickly with its physical buttons and dials. Also the much larger sensor and lens means far less noise, far more light gets in and I don't need to put the ISO nearly as high or the shutter nearly as slow. Also the adjustable aperture is great so you have far more control over the picture. Also it frees up my phone battery for other uses so I don't have to charge it as much or worry about if it will have enough power before I am at a place to charge it at. Since using the camera drains it very fast.
@danielschmaderer Жыл бұрын
@@kashishkumari4266 my current camera is a fujifilm X-T5, which is APS-C. My next camera will be full frame, but I have used and owned full frame prior. The current mirrorless full frame lenses across the board work for my current needs, so going back to full frame seems the way to go, BUT I’m in no rush at all.
@danielschmaderer Жыл бұрын
@@Ballissle exactly. Phones have to rely on “night mode,” which is just a slower shutter speed. A mirrorless, even cheap aps-c cameras, can shoot faster by bumping up the iso and still get amazing results, which will also speed up workflow or just your experience in general. The larger sensor with its ability to gather more information, greatly helps with any post processing. Don’t want to post process? Then the JPEGs usually work out great.

The reason we still have shutter sounds in digital cameras is not just due to influences from early iOS skeuomorphism, but more importantly a legal requirement to comply with anti-voyeurism laws in some areas. The most known example is in Japan, where shutter sounds are mandatory for all mobile phone cameras and cannot be shut down, unless you root it. Human faces are considered a privacy in Japanese culture (which partly explains why wearing masks is popular there even before COVID) and taking photos of strangers without consent, even accidental, can be subject to charges.

I know you said on Twitter that this didn't do well. But this is by far one of the best videos to understand the camera and especially about focal length. I'm a firm believer in having great focal lengths. Like for example as you explained about ultra wide at 13mm and going all the way to 120mm. For me 60-70mm is perfect for taking videos or photos of people as they look proportionate and correct. Really wish we can improve on this and having this under one lens as the tech gets even better because computational photography is getting better with facial distortion with correction. I think Xiaomi did a concept phone of a lens that can change different focal lengths by physically moving the lens. Either this gets better or computational photography takes over and we are seeing Google Pixel taking those steps. Thanks for this video Arun.

Amazing video. You broke it down in such a way that even complete newbies can understand. I am a camera enthusiast and knew most of the previous stuff, but the mechanism and software behind Night mode really is amazing ❤ There are people in the comments saying that proper mirrorless cameras will always be better than smartphone cameras. This is not true. The main advantage of a phone is convenience and ease of use. Sure, an actual mirrorless camera CAN be better, but how easy is it to carry around? How about how easily an average person can take an amazing shot? For that, nothing can beat modern day smartphone cameras. If you gave someone a smartphone and a mirrorless camera, unless that person was a professional photographer, the smartphone photo would always come out better. In the end, that's what matters.

9:45 - Also, it’s important to remember that the focal lengths reported digital cameras are “35mm-equivalent.” That is, they *_look_* the same as a 35mm film camera with a lens of that focal length would see. Actually though, everything is shrunken down proportionally.

This was actually super informative and helps me understand the absolutely absurd camera module on my Xiaomi 12 pro and how to use it better, especially in pro mode. In pro mode, everything is manually adjustable, including the chosen lens and it's stacking purely digital zoom on top rather than actually swapping between them. So if I want to say take a 5x zoom photo, it's smarter to use the 3x lens and zoom in a tiny bit rather than using the 1x lens and zooming all the way to 5x.

*Let's also point something very important* Flagship phone camera Lenses are not quite the focal length they claim to be (Ex: 13mm, 24mm.. etc) What phone manufacturers do in their cameras is to actually try to simulate the popular and very standard field of a "Full Frame" or 35mm camera sensor, which is pretty different from having a real Full frame camera and lenses, and that's why the focal length on these phones is always an approximate and not precise, because in order to actually be, it would need to be a 35mm sensor paired with a designated actual camera lens...
