The 987.1 engines were so problematic so I had to spend extra money to get the 987.2 2.9L. The best car for $20k right now.
@will_behind_the_wheel2 жыл бұрын
From my experience now i would have to agree. Now the engine is sorted I'm pretty happy. With a bit of hindsight the 2.9 is the pick of the 987 bunch
@Sto9502 жыл бұрын
Yeah have to agree. I daily a 987.2 2.9, absolutely love it. Sorry to hear about the engine issue and look forward to seeing a resolution. My advice Jason, if you now have it sorted and have accepted the costs etc. is just to enjoy it. Drive the nuts of it, you'll remember all that long after you've forgotten the problems.

I had a 2000 Boxster S a couple of years ago, and it was pretty reliable. Full Porsche history, 196000kms, and only 3 owners. But within a year, it needed timing chain guides & tensioners, as the chain would slap like buggery on cold start. I also got a strong stench of petrol on a cold start, which meant leaky injectors. Then the suspension would creak like an old mattress, which meant new bushes. My local Porsche specialist said it would be sensible to replace the original IMS bearing while doing the chain kit; total estimate for the above jobs? $12000 dollars. I only paid $14500 for the car. So I sold it for more than I paid (thanks, COVID!), and bought a 2007 MX5. It's slower and less prestigious, but it hasn't had a single thing go wrong; not even a blown bulb.

Thanks for watching mate. Well done selling and making a bit. Love the MX5 maybe I'll get another one day

I had a 987 boxster... same roof issue... just open the roof a little bit, open your window, use your fingers to guide the curved roof piping in its place as you close the roof, then pull the roof handle to tension the roof (until you've changed the elastic). On your ignition issue, have you tried the 2nd key just to confirm it's not a key issue. Ps for sure whoever sold you the car knew about the engine issue.

Thanks for the advice. And if you look on KZbin I’m sure it’s not hard to find where I bought this from. I put it down as a lesson to get a car like this checked by a specialist first.
@foxlake6750 Жыл бұрын
To fix the piping, pull the the roof about half back, the rear part of the elastic is held by a fastener. Undo the fastener, you will find the elastic has hole locations every 1/2” or so, I moved my up about two holes and was enough to pull the piping to the inside of the frame rail.

Nice video. A great boxster/cayman rebuttal from an expert in Porsche club of USA: if they started off with a mid engine 2 seater, maybe there would have been no need for a 911. Who knows!

Thanks for watching Steve. Not solved the error that it flaggs but I found that if I keep pressure on the key while turning it always starts. Still a job i will need to do though.

I also own 2005 987 boxster s. I imported it from USA1.5 years ago for the equivalent of 11k GBP and so far put another 13k into engine rebuild, clutch replacement, ac replacement, steering assist pump, power steering, fixing roof, two o2 sensors, countless electrical issues etc. The most expensive cars in the world are cheap sports cars

This is a lesson I have now come to learn. "if you can't afford a good Porsche you can't afford a bad one". All fixed now and kind of enjoyed the process. The Porsche community have been great help.

The 2005 boxster S were plagued with many many issues. A lot of the engine issues didn't get solved till 2006. If anyone is considering this geneartion save up enough for a 987.2 and a lot of the problems will go away. Sorry that this happened to you, glade you put in the work to keep it running.
@will_behind_the_wheel2 жыл бұрын
@@rocketcider7761 thanks mate. It’s running well but I would agree. I think the 2.9 gen 2 is a safe purchase. Or buy one that has already been rebuilt. 😃

Just Replace the ignition switch, it’s easy and not too pricey. It’s a 15 minute job. Also replace the clutch lock out switch. It’s a 10 dollar part.

Unfortunately for you mate, I think you purchased a poorly maintained vehicle. So many problems at the time of purchase makes me think the previous owner just ran it into the ground and sold you the headaches. All the problems shown (not including that engine rebuild) are just maintenance issues that you would expect with any older car. I couldn't tell you if the previous owner knew about the motor but if I was a betting man, I would put a fiver on it. I have a beautifully maintained 2006 3.4S and it's like brand new. No problems whatsoever.

There are no such thing as a cheap Porsche, you buy a cheap Porsche you will certainly buy twice. Porsche is a completely different car to MX5 and must have a dedicated budget put aside for servicing or breakdowns. The running cost can bankrupt a person who is not financially prepared so being a Boxster as per poor man Porsche, it’s still a mid engine charged at an hourly rate at Indy or Porsche garages. Even a brand new Porsche can throw in the spanner and I love that way. Enjoy your rebuild engine every penny spent to keep a Porsche on the road is well worthy.
@will_behind_the_wheel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Enjoying the car again and it all seems worth it in the end. Had the ims changed while the engine was out and gave me a chance to get to know the car better. I've heard all sorts of horror stories. I'll do a breakdown video soon of what went wrong. :)

70% of all Porsches ever built are still running I hear, despite the dreaded IMS BEARING. I PUT 125,000 miles on my 05 Boxster S. Compression was 160 lbs dead in all cylinders. Gave it to a friend and now have a lovely 2016 981 Spyder. Life is great.
