I almost spat my coffee out at that bill! Well done for getting it done and at a reputable porshe specialist. You can enjoy it with more peace of mind now you've bought it up to standard. Will also give future owners more confidence if you sell down the road.

I spoke to Angus for a full rebuild on a cayman s 987 quote was around 8k plus vat included 6 Niki liners too of course I can see why your bill is quite abit more as you’ve had other work done like clutch and some other stuff ?

Bore score is mainly due to bad injector washing the oil off the cylinder wall. Sample the oil, fuel in the oil is the 1st indicator. Run fuel injector cleaner often on DI cars.
@teekster69 Жыл бұрын
That’s a great price! I just paid $29k US to rebuild my 996.2. I needed new cylinder liners so I went to 4.0l with forged piston rods. That added $7k to the build. You’re still getting a steal!

Thanks for watching. I Was trying to keep the costs low while still getting a proper job done. I see that Hartch in the uk offer a service to increase engine size but the costs are huge :)

Well done for digging deep and fixing it rather than breaking it for parts and getting another car. I do wonder what it would cost to get a relatively similar non-porsche engine rebuilt in a similar way, parts-wise I'm sure dealers and breakers take liberties just because of the badge.

I think you have been brave in not including new cylinders in the rebuild, Hope that does not come back and bite you. There is only one engine builder I would have sent your car off to and that would have been Hartech. Their reputation for these Gen 1 engine rebuilds, and there total solution in relation to bore scoring is fantastic. I hope your builder told you to put some heat into the engine before giving it full beans (even after any breaking in period they have recommended). Its adds to longevity. Shame Porsche never put in a variable rev limiter like on the BMW M cars to avoid cold engine abuse.
@will_behind_the_wheel Жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony. Thanks for watching. With me not knowing what the cause of the engine failure was I needed it taking apart. From there Hartech is where it would have been sent if I decided to go with new cylinders. Definitly after running it in I am very careful with giving it time to warm up.

Because I have a separate daily driver and decent sized driveway - I would have done the work on my own and invested the labor costs into my tool collection. Here I would have sourced the parts on my own and bought the following tools: quick jack to lift the car, an engine jack / holder to pull the engine and transmission out Once the engine was out I would go to town updating old pipes and seals this would take a bunch of time but I think its worth it for these cars, considering these items are why the values have dropped in these cars making them affordable (987.1) Also next time I want to lift the car up and do suspension work, itll be much easier / cheaper with my new jacks

Thank you so much for this superb information.. I keep toying with the idea of buying either a Boxster or a Cayman to replace my Abarth 124 spider but I keep seeing videos about problems and I don’t know if I’m as brave as you are to go through all this. now you’ve done all this work, you can really enjoy this superb car.👍

Thanks for watching Peter. I love the abarth. I would probably get a boxster from a dealer with a warrentee or even buy one that has had a rebuild done. AMS had some for sale last time i was there. May be worth looking at. Be careful, Once you buy a Porsche there is no going back :)
@peterf46 Жыл бұрын
@@will_behind_the_wheel very enjoyable to watch this kind of video, thank you. I think you might be right about buying one from a dealer, as long as it’s a good one. There are so few sports cars to choose from, maybe it’s time for a Porsche. I’ve only driven a 911 and it had a really impressive grown-up go-kart like feel. Thanks for the advice. 👍

I added an extra £10k to my budget and bought the 987.2 base Cayman spec out with a cracking 2.9 engine, I would not change it for anything as it’s at home driving in London traffic. There are good deals to be had with the 2.7 Gen 1 if you live in an urban area with no intention to track your car but stretching to the 2.9 Gen 2 is fantastic especially if you drive all Cayman engine variants back to back. Well at a considerable cost you now have a well sorted Porsche Boxster. Just thinking out the box 📦 here for prospective buyers who perhaps narrow their options only to face a catastrophic repair bills. Enjoy your new build hopefully trouble free!

The upcharge for the crankshaft, IMS, and clutch seems a bit steep to me, especially considering the eBay price included VAT. Also, given the nature of the eBay rebuild, what are the chances you wouldn't need a crankshaft? I also have to say that the 6k quoted to additionally address bore scoring seems steep to me. Obviously, this was a bitter pill to swallow. IMO, it makes a strong case for buying a car with a rebuild already done, because it tends not to add much to the purchase price. A car in need of such a rebuild is worth very little, and a car with bore scoring is arguably completely worthless. Anyway, thank you for sharing this! And as I see it's now been a year since, I hope you have had no more problems, have no regrets, and have been able to fully enjoy the car!

Hi Vince thanks for watching. Im hopefully going to be getting more vids our asap. I bought this car on 70k with good service history by porsche specialists. The service a year before I bought it was done by weissach uk, who are some of the best in the game. Still a bit of a mystery how the engine failed. But its been running well now that the guys at AMS have rebuilt it.

New subscriber. That was very interesting. So about 3,800 pounds incl. VAT for labour. I'm always curious the decision factor that would make someone who was a competent home mechanic choose not trying doing it themselves. That 3,800 could buy a lot of the specialist tools needed. I guess it's the fantasy that YTube car mechanicing videos can lead one to dream that these jobs are straightforward. Until a part won't fit, or you break something when trying to dismantle it. Then the headaches begin ...

You sure it’s the engine and not knackered water pump, idler pulley or blowing manifolds? If it is, easiest way out is put it on EBay as spares or repair as some home mechanic will buy and put in a 2nd hand engine. Parting out a car is hard work and there’s lots of junk to get rid off. Good luck

That bill is mental. 😂. How much did you pay for the car anyway? I suppose paying that makes sense if you’re gonna keep it for a while - & to be fair you could probably sell & get most of your money back. Just wondering in my case if it’s worth it - if I realise it would need that much money to put it right. Do you think most of the stuff was neccesary/or more just replacing to be safe?
@will_behind_the_wheel Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Harrison. I paid 12 for the car, so it is still cheaper than a newer 140i or golf R, these were cars I thought of before buying this. I think I'll hold onto this one now as I know its been sorted. Looking at others that have had this rebuild their values are strong so hopefully I'll see a bit back.
