The question of animal sacrifice often comes up in this part of the Bible, with words like 'an aroma pleasing to The Lord'. This used to puzzle me, until I read the passage in Terry Pratchett's 'Going Postal' in which Moist von Lipwig goes to the temple of Offler the crocodile god to offer a prayer, taking along the prescribed offering of sausages. The dialogue in the film version goes something like this. I'm going from memory, and shortening I think: Moist: 'As I understand it, the gift of sausages reaches Offler by being fried, yes? And the spirit of the sausages ascends unto Offler by means of the smell? And then you eat the sausages?' The priest replies: 'The true sausagiddity goes straight to Offler. He, of course, eats the spirit of the sausages. We eat the mere earthly shell.' 'That would explain why the smell of sausages is always better than the actual sausage then?', said Moist. 'I've often noticed that.' The priest was impressed. 'You should have been a theologian' he said.

"thou shalt not kill. Unless..."
@Grim_Beard
@Grim_Beard 2 жыл бұрын
That's a common misconception, due to how it's usually translated into English. An accurate translation would be "Thou shalt not murder". That still allows killing in war, capital punishment for crimes or 'sins', killing animals and plants, and any other legal killing. It's still stupid, because all Yahweh said was "I'm telling you not to do something that you've already decided you shouldn't do". However, it's not stupid for the reason most people think it is.

This "Lord, your God" guy can't seem to keep his rules straight at all. He talks about burning animals if people accidentally don't follow his instructions to burn animals, wants people who blaspheme him to be exiles, and anyone who picks up wood on the Sabbath to be executed. Working on the Sabbath is a harsher crime than blasphemy? Or is the Lord just making this up as he goes along, and a lot of people blasphemed against him on purpose because they wanted to be exiled?

So for example, when we read carefully what Yahweh says in the book of Leviticus, namely that the Aaronids (the sons of Aaron only), are high priests contrary to the Levites, that they alone are Yahweh’s mediators and the Levites are reduced to mere ministers of the Aaronids, that only through sacrifice can one atone for sins and not confession as preached by the Levites, or more precisely the Levite’s Yahweh, etc., *it can be no coincidence that in these laws and commandments,* ***which are placed on the mouth of Yahweh,*** *that Yahweh himself is presented advocating and legitimating the very views and beliefs of the specific priestly guild writing the text, and, contrary to the views and beliefs of their rivals, the Levites and the Levite’s Yahweh!* We will examine this more closely when we get to the contradictions in these books. But in short, this was the function of ancient literature, and we are allowing these ancient texts to speak for themselves. *In this particular case, the Levites and Aaronids wrote specific texts that each advocated their religious beliefs, views, and their position as high priests* ***by writing these sentiments directly into the mouth of their god!*** But just studying the Bible alone, scientifically, affords us the occasion *to see that many of these so-called words of Yahweh are* ***actually the very words of the texts’ authors.*** When we see numerous texts employing this ancient literary technique, and moreover, ***presenting Yahweh as the spokesperson for their own views and agenda,*** *and contrary to Yahweh’s other words in other texts written by other authors employing the same technique,* how can one conclude otherwise. In other words, when in the composite text that we now call the Bible we find: Yahweh declaring that only Aaronids can officiate as his priests and Yahweh declaring that all Levites can officiate as high priest; Yahweh declaring that sin is atoned through confession and Yahweh declaring that sin is only expiated through the sacrificial cult, no exceptions; Yahweh declaring that he gave laws and commandments at Sinai and Yahweh declaring that he only gave the Ten Commandments at Sinai; Yahweh commanding to exterminate all the Canaanites without pity and Yahweh declaring to tolerate them and live in their midst; Yahweh declaring that the wilderness generation were disloyal and rebellious and Yahweh declaring that they were a paradigm of loyalty and faith; Yahweh declaring that he may be offered sacrifices at any altar and Yahweh declaring that there is only one altar where sacrifices are to be offered up; Yahweh declaring that the people saw him at Sinai and Yahweh declaring that they only heard his voice; Yahweh declaring that circumcision is an eternal covenant and keeping the land depends on observing this very commandment and Yahweh declaring the Mosaic laws as the covenant and keeping the land is dependent on keeping these laws; Yahweh declaring that he dwells in the midst of the people and Yahweh declaring that he only resides in heaven; Yahweh commanding Passover to be celebrated by all at Jerusalem and Yahweh commanding it to be celebrated at each person’s home; Yahweh commanding that animals for consumption must be ritually sacrificed and Yahweh commanding that they don’t have to be sacrificed ritually, etc. ***one must conclude that Yahweh is being used by these authors, each with their own contrary views and beliefs as a spokesperson for each of these authors’ agendas.*** These are all the personal, and competing, views, theological beliefs, and religious systems of our biblical authors. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. *"Studying the Bible"* - Dr Steven DiMattei *"Contradictions in the Bible | Identified verse by verse and explained using the most up-to-date scholarly information about the Bible, its texts, and the men who wrote them"* -- by Dr. Steven DiMattei

Besides everything else I unbelievable about the bible, I can't make sense of scale. The alter is something along the size of a truck, I think. You could stack a handful dead critters and wine and these crappy flour crackers. But, there are hundreds of thousands of people out there sinning or just bringing in their mandatory "cut" or "protection" god requires. There are only 24 hours in a day and only so much room on the grill.

1. Dude...sigh...WE'RE IN CANAAN. Seriously, can God not advance the plot any faster? I:t's been literal books of this shit. 2. It's odd tha this particular god demands wine offerings, because MOST gods in most pantheons didn't do that. Dionysus is an obvious exception, but generally, his followers would drink the wine themselves. Another exception is Goddess Kali further out east in India, but Mother Kali is a Goddess of outcasts, among other things, and drinkers were often considered ritually unclean in the pat. I don't know about now. 3. "You and he foreigner shall be the same before the Lord." EXCEPT FOR...alright, y'all help me name all the instances so far where that hasn't been the case. 4. Contextually, though, Hemant, there was, WAAAAAAY back ye-haw, this idea of a reciprocal relationship between humans and god/s. There are some variations of Indian (as in India, not as in Indigenous) creation myths where the Ashvin Twins--the first two men...depending on who you ask--sacrifice a horse, or a cow, again, depending on who you ask, to the gods in order to give life to the new world, but that's not universal. A LOT of Indian and European cultures have this same idea, though, because sacrifice is thought to make things new and stronger, and, in some pantheons, the gods can't maintain their own strength without sacrifice. Not true of the Devas or of Yahweh, though it's implied to be true of the Mesopotamian, Greek, and Mayan gods. In the pantheons where that's not the case, though, it's more seen as tit-for-tat. "You offer me a cow, I'll give you a son." That kind of thing. Law of equal exchange, but these systems are also largely based in trade economies. 5. Mind you, not being able to hang out with the people who worship God can ALSO mean being cut off from your family, just like with Mormons and JW's, which is not WONDERFUL, to be real. That and the fact that you're now fair game during their holy wars. 6. Is stoning omeone to death no considered a form of work I know of Jewish people who can't leave the house on the Sabbath. I've heard of entire communities in Israel where all of the houses are of one piece, joined by corridors, so that no one has to go outside if they want to see their neighbour on the Sabbath. Can anyone confirm if that's a thing, though? I'm not sure if it's just hearsay. 7. No, really, I've seen this in practice: Orthodox Jews will wear tassels on their clothes, as well as small boxes with Scripture on them, around their neck and beside their head, while reading from the Torah. VERY long tradition. They also have to cover their head and wear a blue and white shawl. And I'm not sure if that's incumbent upon women, too: I've only ever seen a guy do that.

To address your #2 point. In the new testament the biblical gods jesus/yahweh have followers that drink wine with the ritualistic eating and drinking of flesh and blood to commemorate their deities. The flesh and blood were probably symbolic and not actual flesh and blood but even so it would be bread and wine as the symbolic substitute for the ritual

Not only that, the Greek pantheon went as far as to demand the WORST bits of the animal, being the fat and bones. Imagine if a pastor, instead of demanding money, gave people the "You get a car, you get a car!" treatment after every ritual day.

They should just start telling God, "no". If God threatens to kill them for not doing something, they can then ask, "if we do it, will you still kill us?". He would then just tell them, "yes".

So, my question is what happens to all that "offerings to the lord?"Does it stay there until god decides to eat or is it handed out to the engorged priests? Since the tent is taken out first when they pack up, is it left there? This is so wasteful.
