As for the BAR in .308/7.62x51 instead of 30-06, it's a fairly easy conversion. This was done en-mass to many WW2 era 30-06 weapons when NATO adopted the 7.62x51. The Garand, Browning 1919, etc... were often converted to use the .308 type cartridge, so it's definitely possible for that to have been done with BARs as well.

I would've been fine with this. Natty G's still using old but reliable stuff due to issues with logistics. F3 was fine in this regard with the prevalence of FAL/G3 hybrids chambered in 5.56x45mm. But then came F4 and for some reason the Commonwealth National Guard got sets of new T-60 power armor because "rool ov kewl" in the prewar prologue, and the prevalence of pipe weapons in master locked military safes inside 200+ year old sealed bunkers, and the asinine "standard issue" weapons that would've been outdated at the end of WWII. Really. T-60 should've been a Brotherhood of Steel exclusive power armor. Made as replacement upgrades for aging T-45s they had. While the prewar prologue National Guard should've been using T-45 instead. Pipe weapons should be removed from any prewar military installation loot tables. And conventional ballistic firearm design (not including laser, plasma, cryo, and the like) should be completely scrapped and replaced with realistic designs. There'd be 2 prevailing design philosophies. Prewar and postwar. Prewar is basically carbon copies of ours. With some upgrades and additions to our current ones to portray 2070's weapons. Really old prewar weapons for example would be Korean to WWI weapons. Modern 2070's prewar weapons would be really rugged, metal reinforced M16s with ACOGs or Mk19's with carry handles for power armor. Postwar would be prewar weapons redesigned to be as easy to manufacture in the post apocalypse but still be reliable and useable as possible. An example would be an M16 with simply made wood furniture, no dust cover, no T-handle, no carry handle, no forward assist, simple notch and post sights, straight magazines, semi automatic by default, and a long screw on the bolt to act as the charging handle.

My suspicion is that they originally intended to recreate the R-93 (G-3) in FO4, but due to some combination of development crunch, legal concerns over the similarity to a real world firearm, and meddling theory of "game balance", the team had to drop it, and cludged together the combat rifle late in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to a spreadsheet with slots for different level ranges and enemy groups, where they had to have something to plug into each cell. That would also explain the monstrosity that is the 'assault rifle', i.e. "we need a mid-level full auto by default gun that looks appropriately sized for super mutants. But we don't want to call it an MG because that has certain connotations for damage/ammo..." Terrible reasoning, but very much standard game dev.

It would've made more sense lore-wise if the standard issue combat rifle for the US military was the M14. It's an American design, it shoots 7.62/.308, it's highly customizable, and it's what the US picked in real life over the G3 & FAL rifles. Plus, you could potentially use a workbench to make into a squad automatic weapon by attaching a bipod + drum magazine and making it automatic - or convert it to 5.56 and effectively turn it into a Mini-14.
@Mercwithamouth1012 жыл бұрын
Fun Fact during the early years of the US involvement in WWII there a debate within the US Arsenal to make the BAR the standard battle rifle for US forces. The plan was to convert them to Semiauto which would allow them to reduce the weight of the rifle. That would make it light enough to be used for riflemen. But the US was already fielding M1 Garands at the time and they felt that served the role.

@TheArklyte9 күн бұрын
Looking at design documents, it does indeed feel like it was one of the first guns designed for Fallout 4 and that it was intended to be ONE gun with combat shotgun. They wanted to go the firearm family route - ie you find basic gun that is representing an operating system(AK, AR-15, AR-18, etc), then you choose what caliber it'll be in to decide what type of gun it is, then you configure trigger group and stock to get final gun which you then modify with bells and whistles. The fact that we see what we see instead means that team responsible for guns had one productive sane member, who came up with this idea and either was fired afterwards, or didn't get any support and had to do too many things alone, OR find out that such a logical system would be too complex for this corpse of an engine. Seems like 4 guns were intended for "service rifle" ie 20 gauge shotgun, .45 SMG, 5,56 assault carbine and .308 DMR. And had they've used G3(because FAL doesn't have such variety) as basis, we would have gotten all of those because that's just MP5(UMP40), G32(was it G32 or G33?) and G3(combined with police sniper version and LMG). They needed only to invent shotgun conversion. And then introduce the same thing on AR-15 and AK platforms.

I'd like to think that the Combat Rifle was only for the national guard of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that sacrificed modernity for versatility and ease of manufacture (although we really don't see a small arms factory in FO4). Perhaps the designers had a PPSH-41 and a BAR in their reference collection and thought to just mash them together. This would explain why it looks really simple and mashup of PPSH-41 (for the simplicity and ease of manufacture) and the BAR M1918A2 (for the .30 caliber round and sustained fire capability). More can be manufactured in a short time frame, so it kind of makes sense to me. So while the national guard had that, the actual military had the R91 and was in the process of adopting the Laser Rifle on a wider scale. Although the counter to this explanation would be, "The army should have just passed down the older R91's to the national guard" and I agree with that since it would ease tensions on the manufacturing part, but I guess Bethesda never thought about that. I still don't like the combat rifle and all the vanilla mods, but I like to create my own lore to sort of justify it, but this doesn't always work out (i.e. the FO4 Assault Rifle). In all honesty, modern weapons (and let's be clear here, that means weapons with black, polymer furniture and 21st century optics) could easily exist in fallout, but would almost certainly be about as common as finding a mother load during a gold rush. After 200 years there'd be the guns that had been passed around and the polymer had degraded or broken from use and the guns that had just been discovered. The latter would be more and more rare with every passing year. The use and abuse many of these weapons would see would require constant maintenance and repairs. Wood furniture and simpler optics give the feel that it's been worked on since the great war and IMO make the game that slight bit more immersive. The post 2010 aftermarket parts on a lot of the gun mods drag me straight out of the wasteland and into call of duty.
@DJWeapon8 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion. Fallout having modern tacticool guns is lore friendly. After all, the world reached 2077 and has advanced combat robots like the sentrybots and assaultrons before the nuclear apocalypse occurred. If anything, the guns shown in the series aren't advanced enough to fit the level of technology available during 2077. *_That said._* There is still a ton of nuance in how guns should be presented in the series based on the lore and the time it is set in. Early Prewar, which is before 2060, would have all of the advanced guns with advanced optics and attachments. But these would be extremely rare in the game. Being turned into Unique Weapons that you only get after delving into a dangerous location that has been sealed for over 200 years. Late Poswar, which is after 2060 to 2077, would have these advanced guns start using other materials than polymer like aluminum or wood, and would have little to no optics or attachments. Some long range riflea having a magnified optic at best. This is due to the resource wars causing an increasing petroleum shortage that is now affecting the US. Low access to petroleum = low polymer production rate = low amounts of polymer gun furniture. In general, these guns would be more prevalent in the games. Especially when the game is set very early after the apocalypse. Where they are used as loot and set dressing when exploring prewar locations. Postwar guns would be guns made after 2077. They come in a variety of designs ranging from "better than nothing" improvised pipe guns that are single shot to revolvers at the most, simple but reliable bolt actions, to remanufactured derivatives of the advanced Prewar guns made using Postwar materials and tooling. Generally speaking, postwar guns would make up the vast majority of guns in the game. With the kind of designs that are prevalent being based on the tech level the game presents. For example: A game set in a tribal society just 30 years after the nukes where melee combat is the norm would have almost all of its guns be single shot pipe guns. A game where it is set inside a thriving postwar city 200 years after the nukes would have full auto M4s and Uzis with wooden furniture.

Honestly tho, the choice to us 1940s01950s weapons in fallout four makes a lot of sense when you compare the post war history to our real history. Post ww2, many Military surplus weapons such as the BAR and Thomson were adopted by police and prisons for riot control, which was just as big of an issue in our world as it was the fallout universe. We know Boston was being used to ship weapons and military surplus to the rest of the US for riot control (hence the absurd amount of power armor), so it'd make sense that we'd find the army's older weapons. It would have made sense if service rifles were in the game, but only spawned in form military installations. Side note, i think the 10 mil is actually pretty close to the og in size-

The more I look at Fallout 4 the more I feel like it was an in house tech demo that got "polished" for release. Almost all of the new designs have an early concept art feel. Not just the weapons, the tanks and trains feel the same. Lots of clipping and unpolished ideas that early iterations tend to have. The vanilla modding system feels like all the barrel and receiver options are just there to show that the menu works. Like they were planning to add more options with different models or different gameplay effects but just didn't have time. They also double as a band aid solution for the broken enemy scaling. The jetpack seems like an example of something that was added in last minute. Or maybe it was added earlier on but in their rush to polish the open world for release they just didn't have time to add more exploration options. The DLCs are still lackluster but they did have more options to get some use out of the jetpack. The story also has an unedited first draft feeling. The basic story beats might have worked if more thought was put into how it was strung together. The story is so flawed I don't know if that could actually be pulled off though. Especially with how poor Bethesda's writing is in other games. It just makes me really curious what happened behind the scenes. It seems like a lot of devs had good ideas but just didn't have time to implement them. Or were pulled away to work on whatever whim Todd had that day.

Any gunsmith will do. They just need a quick crash course on Fallout lore to understand what kind of gun *_makes sense_* in the game. • The nuclear apocalypse happening in 2077. • The resource wars creating a worldwide petroleum shortage. • The tech level and timeframe a game would be set in. Taking these into account, they can then not only effectively advise the art team on if the guns they're making would work and be combat effective, but also if it makes sense with the tech level in the game its going to be in.

The problem is that the developers of Fallout have barely any firearms knowledge and probably didn't know this. In the Fallout 3 canon it's established that the US uses the R91 as it's ballistic service rifle and the R91 is clearly a CETME/HK roller delayed blowback family rifle. On top of that they chambered the R91 in 5.56 which means that the US, instead of adopting the homegrown AR-15, actually use a HK33/CETME-L style of rifle. It would have made much more sense for them to go with the alternate universe "what if the FAL won" scenario but they didn't.

why Bethesda didn’t just add a G3 style rifle instead is beyond me. Fallout 3 had the R91. That one was decent by fallout standards. The rifles that the R91 was based on even have a left side charging handle which Bethesda has a strange affinity for (presumably because they are easier to animate.) It would have been perfect for the game but they actively went out of their way to make the most awkward design choice possible that actively confuses the fallout timeline more than it already is. Fallout guns don’t need to be realistic, but they should be believable at the very least. I recommend installing the mod “Things G3” and installing a replacer for the combat rifle. Things G3 isn’t perfect but it is far better and more immersive than fallout 4s equivalent.

Really wish we got automatic rifle weapons that weren't, well, the ones in the base game. Replacers have been sweet, but I end up staring at the damage numbers in FO4Edit & the Workbench at this point to make sure they don't ruin the tricky Jenga tower of balance that vanilla and mods have to hope they can be. I miss DT/DR so much T_T

It's not very hard to use FO4 edit to swap out the Combat Rifle for something better, Daks got a great simple tutorial on it. While I have mine replaced with the BAR mod in this video, another good replacement mod is the lore friendly 5.56 mod by jkruse05. It adds a R91-inspired rifle that's got good customization, and it throws in the New Vegas LMG as well. He's also got a mod that adds a pistol grip to the Combat Rifle which tones down the cursed factor on it, and it'll convert it to 5.56 as well. Rifles Rebirth by Skibidaa also has a few good replacements for it. There's a m14-inspired Rifle that fits the role good, though it does have a really weird chunky carry handle sight on it. Lastly, Wanaming0's FAL mod is perfect for the role. It can be as retro or modern as you want, and it's got a bunch of uniques in there too.

Personally I like the Skibadaa guns but I wanted no change to game balance. The solution was relatively simple though. I've gone through and replaced all the meshes and animations for the combat Rifle with Skibadaas assets It was worth learning to navigate the CK. As a bonus I put the compensator for Skibadaas Anti material Rifle on the 10mm pistol.
