This movie has sins, several just for trying to make it seem like P.T. Barnum was a super nice and swell guy. TLDR: he wasn't.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

When the green dress Zendaya's character wears gets talked about: historically accurate as 19th century introduced a bright green dye which was very popular and used in pretty much everything, but was made using arsenic so it was also making people sick and killing them too. So Zendaya's character would be being slowly poisoned in that scene on the theater stairs when they meet his parents who berate him for bringing her. Who knows, maybe somebody was thinking that dress color would be symbolic, considering the history of that particular color dye.

What's completely nuts, is the movie would've probably been multiple times more popular if they had just called it, "The Greatest Show", and added a disclaimer at the beginning that says something along the lines of, "The story of P.T. Barnum has been altered for the production of this movie. We encourage you, the viewer, to do your own research about P.T. Barnum, and his show, before making any judgements on his character."

Barnum is actually the reason we use the word jumbo to denote something huge. Because of an elephant names Jumbo which was the first African elephant kept in captivity, which he bought from the London zoo. And of course, he claimed Jumbo was the largest elephant in the world, though he was only 24 years old, and male African elephants continue growing into their 40s. Jumbo died about a year later after being sideswiped by a train.

My favorite character. He doesn't speak a word and is still very obviously supportive of Barnum. I dunno, maybe that's just his character, that he's supportive. But I kept getting distracted during The Other Side by how he was in sync with both of them, never got in the way but still managed to play a part in the number. Not to mention he wasn't sinned once.

I just wanna point out that Zefron ran back into the building to save specifically Zendaya. And therefore, she decided that if he was so willing to risk his life to protect her, then he must be serious about her and they could give their relationship a shot. I mean, he did the acrobatics and everything during Rewrite the Stars despite not knowing how just to impress her earlier, but that's obviously not a big enough clue how serious he was about her. As an actual ballerina, I can in fact confirm you have to train for years and years to even relevé on pointe. Even after that, it takes another year or two to do more advanced things like pirouettes on pointe. Your ankles would probably immediately snap after going up on pointe if you put them on without years of practice. You also might not even be able to go up on pointe at all without building up the strength in your ankles.

@erinjackson8119
@erinjackson8119 5 жыл бұрын
“Million” is the adjective not the subject. The subject in that sentence is “dreams”. The reason why is that “a” is an article and “million” is an adjective (as previously mentioned) and in the English language adjectives and articles can’t be subjects. So that would mean the wrong verb was used since million can’t be a subject (I have an English teach for a father)
@jeremymiller1846
@jeremymiller1846 5 жыл бұрын
I think in this case "a million dreams" is a singular collective noun phrase. But "a million somethings" isn't ALWAYS a singular collective noun. One would say "a million dreams are in my head," not "a million dreams is in my head," because in this case it is not a singular collective noun. "Dreams" is the noun, and "a million" is an adjective describing how many dreams there are. However, "a million somethings" can definitely be a singular collective sometimes. It would be correct to say "a million dollars is the price," because "price" is singular and the noun phrases have to agree. In the sentence in question, "is" is a linking verb joining "a million dreams" and "all it's gonna take," so the real question here is whether "all it's gonna take" is singular or plural. "All" can be either, so we have to examine the rest of the phrase to know for sure. "It" is singular, which suggests the entire phrase is singular. But that analysis is somewhat shaky, in my opinion. In conclusion, despite having studied comparative grammar and having earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, I can't say for sure what the right answer is. What I can say is that our grammatical rules are intended to allow us as English speakers to communicate without disagreeing on what our words or phrases mean. In my opinion, the difference between "a million dreams is" and "a million dreams are" is negligible, because both phrases are unambiguous enough as to not cause any confusion to the hearer. So as far as I'm concerned, the answer is "it doesn't matter." And that means it qualifies as a sin.

I would’ve loved this movie if it was told from literally ANY other character’s perspective than Barnum himself. Or they could’ve just made the whole thing fictional and not a representation of something in real life. It could be more like a fairytale of how the first circus came to be and the main characters could be actual good guys... Anyway, sorry that this turned into a rant, my point is; great music was wasted on a mediocre (at best) and controversial movie.

This is a story, not a biography about Barnum. Barnum was just used as a shell to tell a story about a showman and his struggles that has an amazing soundtrack.

Even then, I thought the story was pretty cliche and average. It followed the narrative of a guy who starts out as a nobody who wants to be somebody, finally makes his way into the world, becomes the type of person he hates while also alienating his friends and family, and then realizes he had everything he ever needed in the end. The music was indeed incredible though.

This movie had potential. If they didn't censor it, added a lot more depth to all the storylines, and included some moral dark sides, it would have been good. Despite being an exploitative asshole in most general terms, Barnum actually did pay all of his performers well for the time and far more than they would have received outside of the circus. He was also reputedly a fierce campaigner for equality and civil rights during his tenure in politics, exclaiming that "every soul was equal under God. (or words to that effect, you'd have to look up the actual quote.) He was also famous for exposing frauds and charlatans and hated people who falsely prayed on peoples feelings like soothsayers and psychics. I'm not defending what he did, he exploited the vulnerable and lower classes of the time for personal fame and fortune but considering that pretty much describes every business owner in the 1800's, he did try to at least balance the scales a bit as well given the time he lived.
@drewwesely8853

He never had any slaves or kidnapped people in his shows or circus. Joyce Heth wasn't a slave when Barnum toured with her act, her compensation was that she received constant care which she required as a blind paralyzed elderly woman. not the purpose, premise or thought behind the movie. Hugh Jackman wanted to make a musical, and specifically wanted a musical based on Barnum, pushing the idea for almost 10 years. The purpose was not to make a documentary, or be based on a true story, nor was it marketed to be such. It was made to bring back the Musical Genre in movies, by focusing on the singing, soundtrack and cast, the story is not the point of the movie, but is simply a part of it.

Yup. Well said. Mediocre film, just sort of middle ground. There’s nothing really to dwell on.

I thought it was great, but I can definitely see the mistakes. The run time's really short for a musical, but putting an intermission in a movie would send everyone walking out and no intermission would be horrible in a three hour movie. If it were on Broadway, I can see the many storylines working. As for the music, it's good in the moment, but (besides Never Enough and This is Me), I just can't listen to it outside the movie. I have plenty of musical music downloaded on my phone, but this one didn't make the cut. Maybe it's because it, like a lot of game music, was written perfectly for the moment. Heck, The Other Side was my favorite song when I was watching. The choreography is phenomenal and the singing is great, and I think that's what saved it.

The relationship made me uncomfortable because Efron is in his mid-thirties and Zendaya isn’t even 20.

P.T Barnum might have exploited people with disabilities but he also made them rich AF. look it up. He paid his performers a lot of money and turned them into celebrities. During his time there was literally no place in society for people who had the kind of physical disabilities that you saw in his shows. There were no discrimination laws that protected the disabled so there was no options for employment for them and many of them were poor and destitute before they met PT Barnum. additionally, the show brought people together with similar life experiences, which formed a community of people who, before they were essentially isolated from society. Obviously exploiting people with disabilities and capitalizing on controversy, is offensive and opportunistic but PT wasn't the cut and dry villain that this video is trying to make him out to be and her certainly did not enslave his performers.

It might be later on in life, but he definitely exploited loopholes of anti-slavery laws to keep his first act, the women who was supposedly 160 years old, enslaved to him until she died. And the part he had a public autopsy of her remains was true as well. I have some criticism about this video but CS was spot on about that.

Elly O oh wow, do you really think that someone literally owning a slave is kindness? Like you are seriously thinking that. Never mind he made her death a gross spectacle. That isn’t a sign of someone being kind to anyone, sorry to say. And the one with the rose colored glasses about the past is you. You can not own a person and be kind. If you seriously think she had full consent, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya.

Ariel R At the time they existed, yes. It was kindness. The people of the past aren't as butthurt and weak-minded as the people of today.

Ryan Maliwat There was no such thing as a kind slave master because slavery is inherently abusive, fam. Your faulty logic falls apart that Barnum had to exploit a legal loophole to own Joice Heth because SLAVERY WAS ILLEGAL in the states he was working in. Nevermind that there was no evidence she saw any money despite working 10-12 days as a disabled, frail 80ish year old woman. Just because he kept her clothed and bathed doesn’t mean he was kind. So you can kindly shove that “butthurt” comment because it’s obvious you know nothing about history.

Ariel R Faulty logic is passing judgement on a past historical event based on contemporary morals. There is a give or take 100 or so year gap between our world and PT Barnum's. Therefore it is grossly unfair and faulty to apply the current standards upon a person who has been over a hundred years dead.

Tacosareyummy Yeah, but I'm not going far below the level of this channel. Obviously, it was probably never a common thing, but I do think it existed, and I do think that at least a small amount of preliminary Googling is better than just a feeling that it didn't exist. At least I have some source. But granted, the goal of this channel is comedy, not education, so this is just needless nitpicking at this point.
