MD Jester he hands out high interest loans and when the people default on them, he takes their homes and rents them out or sells them, no matter the conditions of the homes. I mean... I really feel like Scrooge does *know* who the dead person is, at least by the the time they get to the graveyard. He pauses on his way to the grave to tell the spirit that "a life can be made right", in a way that makes it vey clear that he's referring to himself more than this mysterious dead person. Like, there's a difference between being blithely unaware that you're obviously seeing the aftermath of your own death in the future, and knowing but not being willing to accept it until you see definite proof.

@@thompompey32 The muppet version does get a number of key things wrong, though. In the book, we feel very sorry for young Ebenezer-as we learn his father refused to let him come home during Christmas Holidays.....until his younger sister intercedes on his behalf. We also see that he eagerly took part in Cbristmas celebrations when he worked for Fezziwig. During Christmas Present, the book spends more time with Fred, where we learn that he will not hear ill of his uncle, no matter what. The book also has a much harsher rebuke of Scrooge's comments about "the surplus population", by the Spirit. Also, in the book, Scrooge doesn't visit Cratchitt on Christmas Day, but instead spends it with his nephew. He then psyches out Cratchitt at work, the next day, before wishing him a Merry Christmas.
@thompompey325 жыл бұрын
@@TheMarcHicksYou are right and I know there is a lot different - Michael Caine says "cooked with his own turkey" rather than "boiled with his own pudding" even! I don't actually teach the book, just use it as an end of term treat and introduction to one of the most important writers in the English language.

The only reason Caine took the role of Scrooge was because the director promised him that they would treat this like a shakespearen play. Thats why Caine's scrooge is so iconic.

A sin for Scrooge using his money to do nice things? His character arc is learning not to be greedy but generous. He had pinched every penny; collected every cent; deposited every dollar. His money muscles as you put them haven't been used for his whole life. Now that he's a changed man, it's time to put them to work.

I disagree that Scrooge is crying like he wasn’t expecting to see his name on the tombstone. Based on his emotional buildup and dialogue, I would argue that he absolutely knew that it would be his name but was in denial out of sheer horror. When he wipes away the snow, it confirms his fear and dashes any hope of not seeing that. It’s like that dread you feel when a loved one is in a bad accident, waiting, and then having it confirmed that no, they did not survive. That’s the emotional progression of Scrooge in the tombstone scene. And going back, he was aware but in denial of his fate for the previous few scenes as well. He knew that everyone was talking about him, but hung on to that little bit of plausible deniability provided by the other characters playing the pronoun game like a lifeline.

@NoochTV Belle sings a song when she breaks up with Scrooge. it is heartfelt, beautiful and sad. It is NOT included in the Disney+ version and the movie feels incomplete without it.
