I have a theory about the psychic lady: (contains spoilers) She can only detect good spirits, and she cannot directly sense the bad spirits. She can sense when the good spirits are being lead astray, which leads her to believe that she can actually sense bad spirits directly. When she said that the house is clean; to the best of her knowledge, it was! This is because the good spirits realized that the demon lost it's power over them and they were freed, so she could no longer detect anything. I think the demon existed in the house long before the good spirits could be detected, and that building the house over the cemetery is what summoned the demon and trapped the spirits. With the demon summoned, it silently manipulated the family into building the pool, which would eventually unlock the spirits trapped by the house and allow the demon to move to its next phase of the plan. The demon needed to sacrifice Carol-Anne to unleash it's full potential, and the other spirits were probably fed some bullshit about how it's "her time" and what not. With the power of the demon and the spirits combined, she was successfully taken to the other side. Once she had crossed over it may have been too late even if they knew, because the demon was now very powerful. The good spirits could not escape it and they summoned help from the psychic. When Carol-Anne was taken back, and the spirits were released from the house, because the demon lost the power to control them. This caused the psychic lady to believe that the demon was gone too, but it hadn't. The demon was now thoroughly pissed off that its entire plan had been ruined, and attempted to drag anyone still left in the house into hell. It failed because everyone now knew what it was doing, and it had also been severely weakened by the loss of Carol-Anne. The entire house got sucked in to hell, but everybody got out, because the demon simply didn't have the power to stop them!

Possibly true. However, towards the end of the movie when the portal manifests in the kids' bedroom closet, it's probably a safe bet to think that, unlike the previous time, it probably would not only have pulled Carol Anne into Hell, it probably would have killed her if the tentacle had managed to grab her, or anyone else, for that matter (after dragging them into Hell, of course). In hindsight, why didn't Steven throw Tigue's ass into that thing? He was the one who actually desecrated the burial ground!

Even worse. Her murderer got a slap on the wrist because the judge was a raging misogynist that wouldn't allow any testimony from women because he believed they were too emotional for court proceedings. He got so much flak that he resigned and went on... to be a juvenile court judge. Meanwhile Dominque's murderer changed his name to avoid being associated with the whole strangling a woman to death and became gainfully employed as a chef at some of the country's finest restaurants. Those two assholes deserve a poltergeist more for their actions than the whole living on top of graves thing. Sorry for the necropost (heh).

Those remote controls are not the same kind we use today. They actually worked off of sound, when you pushed a button they actually hit a tuning rod which sent a specific inaudible sound to the tv. Hence the term "clicker". So since they did not work off of infrared like most remotes do now, it is plausible it could work from one house to another.
@brianstraight93089 жыл бұрын
PaddyCollector "Plausible" but unlikely. The remote wouldn't be able to produce a loud enough sound for the neighbors' TV to "hear" it.

According to the documentary about, "Poltergeist", the bones used in the movie were real bones of people who died in Indonesia (I believe Indonesia). Apparently, it was cheaper than creating skeletons for the movie. None of the actors knew about the bones and were later ticked off to find that out. Heather actually innocently played with the skeletons. As for Dominique Dunne, well, she had an abusive and jealous boyfriend who killed her.

It wasn't built on a burial ground, it was on a regular cemetary
@FreezeNGraham8 жыл бұрын
It was a normal, modern cemetery built on top of a sealed cave/tomb of a cult of people that traveled west to start a utopian society. Kane (AKA) the demon, was the leader of cult and he convinced them all to seal themselves in by telling them the end of the world was coming. When the world didn't end he wouldn't let them leave. The reason it affected the Freelings house is because the Cult was sealed in a cave directly below the their house. Carol Anne was Clairvoyant and all of the spirits gravitated to her soul because of her gift. The book is available on Ebay and amazon and explains the whole story in much better detail than the movie.

The poltergeist activity just occurred at the Freeling house because Carol Anne was born in the house, so the preacher was able to focuse on her energy, and connected to her soul, which he kind of sucked the energy out of. He used Carol Anne as a great big battery. It didn't help that Carol Anne (and Diane) are psychic, so that was probably a massive plus that helped fuel the preacher's power, once he was able to tap into it.
@awesomeinspector52708 жыл бұрын
The reason the ghosts target the Freeling house in particular is because the father, Steven, is the realtor for the neighborhood and is thereby partially responsible for there being people living there and therefore desecrating their graves.
@miroslavtomic26817 жыл бұрын
It had nothing to do with Steven or his company at all. Carol Ann was the key as she was born in the house and her spirit was part of it.

They didn’t explain this until the 2nd movie which far less people saw but one of the reasons it was that house specifically was because in between the first and second movie they dug a while under the swimming pool and found this big cavern where reverend Kane locked tons of people down below. The book for the 2nd film was even better because they explained all this as well as the neighbors pretty much abandoning the neighborhood
@soyburglar773 жыл бұрын
Not only would this house have been swarming with cops and DFACS workers immediately after Carol Anne’s disappearance, but the parents would’ve been under intense scrutiny and suspicion. They may have even been arrested before any of the ghost hunter stuff even had a chance to happen.

I'm 31 and can explain the remote situation. Old remotes worked on RF like an RC car and not IR/infrared like current remotes. There was absolutely a problem with remotes controlling other TV of the same brand. I'm too young to know from personal experience but I'm an RF engineer so I know all about RF bs

The reason why the scene with chair sliding in kitchen so suddenly jumps to a scene at Tuthil's door is that producers had to cut out rest of the scene in which Steven says that he hates Pizza Hut.

You can find original script online and the Pizza Hut line really did exist in it.

I could see him just saying that because he'd get sick of fast food with 3 kids and B, just to say anything other than comment about reality he just saw. Nothing to do w the pizza at all.

I just finished watching Poltergeist for the first time and have one question. If the little boy is so terrified of the clown doll why did they buy it and why have they kept it?

And better question, why did they sit it in a chair facing his bed when he was terrified of it. As for why they bought it, I think it was Carol Ann's as she was seen sleeping with it at some point.

Not sure anyone will see this, but I'm so upset that he missed this one: right after Diane falls down the stairs, she gets up and runs to the door. The door explodes and sends her flying backwards behind the staircase. When it cuts to her landing on the other side you can clearly see a crew member running out of the shot on the right side of the screen
