Interestingly one pre-video ad here was from a firm manipulating the odo (yes, to show a non-real km/miles). In the ad they then used and named Carly to prove their manipulation on the Bmw is undetected by service tech. What a sneaky ad-sense, right? If I were Carly, I'd not have them do that.

I own a business of a completely different area, but I can tell you I get 80% of my work from word-of-mouth. The reason? I always thing of the customer FIRST, my profit SECOND. If you work on that system, the money WILL come in. As long as you don't price yourself into bankruptcy, you will be fine, and have a strong, stable business, as people will keep sending people your way (meaning you also have to do LESS advertising!)

@@nickturner2813 I left a comment on his "why I hate BMW" video a while back about how these are fairly simple fixes and that he shouldn't be charging top dollar to repair cheap cars (complaining about rubber seals failing, yeah no shit. They all fail with heat and age). It's not worth his time. He's comes across as arrogant, I think he knows a lot about a lot of cars and is charging accordingly but shouldn't be charging "a customer" $100s if not $1000s for simple fixes on an old 3 series. If you have seen the video, I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

Blue / Red issue... Back in the 90's I had the EXACT same issue with a Blue ford Escort, Did due diligence, HPI check etc, came back clean so I bought the car (from a dealer), several weeks later when pulling a trim panel out in the boot I saw red paint, Like you I was thinking of all possibilities, respray, primer accident repair etc, but again like you we were finding red paint everywhere. internally but all the doors / boot / bonnet had no sign of red paint. Eventually I was so concerned I contacted the vehicle crime unit of my local police station and voluntarily handed them the car to strip. What they found was shocking.... the shell was that of stolen red J reg escort which had the vin from a blue K reg escort stuck down over the top of the J reg vin so at a quick look there was no evidence of tampering with the vin, then all parts from the K reg fitted to the shell. After lots of investigation it was found the original K reg had been badly damaged but with no insurance claim hence not showing on HPI, then rebuilt using the stolen shell. Thankfully as I bought on finance from a dealer I was able to hand the car back !

Regarding the colour. Years ago we bought a new Reliant Scimitar . We specified the colour to be Burgundy with tan upholstery. After a few months we noticed that the paint around the drivers door edges was rubbing off to reveal white paint underneath. The factory had taken a car already painted white and repainted it burgundy in order to fulfill our order, instead of building a new car to our colour specification, presumably because as a low volume production model, this was financially better for the manufacturer. Probably the same thing occurred with your car!

strange when looking at the red coming through that the clip holding a wire or cable has been painted blue, suggesting paintwork at some point. A HPI check doesn't guarantee a car has not been involved in an accident, if a previous owner was just 3rd party for instance or a track day car that has had a few off's etc both instances the owner would be paying for repair not an insurance company and therefore any major repairs will not be recorded on HPI.

@@JayEmmOnCars If it's red underneath blue in the engine bay it deffo smells a bit suss. Years ago I came across a similar thing in a mk2 golf gti 16v. It was black but traces of dark (helios) blue in the hard to reach parts of the engine bay. The spare wheel well had a couple of minor scratches on the black paint and it was red underneath. It turned out it was a non declared write off that had been helios blue but had been cut and shut with a red rear end and the whole thing painted black! Not saying this is the same (I genuinely hope it's not) but for me it looks very suspect. The welded on gear knob would be enough for me to have walked away no matter how cheap the car was.

Gluing the vents shut I suspect is down to the missing shrouds Aldous mentioned on the radiator. It probably chucks so much oncoming air through the vents that it's like having the window open in the winter. Regarding the colour,it is possible if the red is just a uniformly flat red that it's a primer, although that seems odd as most paints i've seen use a white or grey primer for blue. If however you discover some left over flake or lacquer, then we're looking at either a factory stage change to a customer order, where they diverted the shell back into the paint shop before sending to the assembly line, or (more worryingly) an off the books chassis change. Basically, a car which SHOULD have been reported as being in an accident, but was reshelled on the quiet at the customers cost. Examining the VIN plate and chassis markings should show you if there's any sign of alteration or transference. Also ask Lamborghini if they have any record of reproducing a VIN plate for it, as they would have a record of doing so if the reshell just fitted a new VIN instead of trying to remove and transfer the existing one. Nice car still James, I really think you're going to enjoy owning this one, even with the initial costs.

Very interesting about the red, perhaps it was red while it was an experience car, more appealing to the average person, then changed back to blue so it didn't have to be registered as a colour change?

When you buy an old car, you need to be ready for lots of issues to keep it running. The more exotic, usually the more problems.

Re the colour, I would guess it's had replacement used parts from another car in red and then painted over in blue.
@akkual

The red color seems to be in structural frame parts, so unlikely. Considering this lambo is from time when Audi was not yet fully involved with Lambo production, it might simply be body storage color that is then primed and coverered for final color, or the factory had presprayed some bodies, the order came in, and they simply decided to respray existing body instead of building a new one, as that's kinda the stuff that pre-Audi involment Lamborghini would do. But even more so, it could simply be a red primer. The blue metallic has some deep purple shift in it, and usually metallic paints do need a specific color primer... blue+red = purple.

So you pay £65 for the dongle and £5-6 per month for the subscription? That’s like £130 in the first year. You can buy a pretty decent semi-professional tool for that.

Does the label with paint codes on (under bonnet lid - not sure on Lamborghini but common VWA location) have primer code? I think you’re right that it’s red primer.
@liamholcroft7212
@liamholcroft7212 3 жыл бұрын
the red paint underneath could just be a primer and the blue top coat has missd in places/peeled off. if it's an etch primer, it wont flake off because it will be chemically bonded to the metal whereas the top coat can chip away because it sits on top of the primer.

Ho ! The car had a busy life. The blue is sublime ! And not common on super cars and Lamborghini. I’m jealous of how many companies in the UK can help you refurbish parts instead of replacing them (I don’t think there is a quarter of them in France, but I hope I’m wrong). Keep doing great work and thank you for the mechanic for taking us through the car.
